8,000 ZAMFARA WOMEN PROTEST OVER SCARCITY OF HUSBANDS

No fewer than 8,000 women on Thursday matched to the Zamfara Hisbah Commission, seeking the state government's assistance to enable them to get married.

Led by the Chairperson of the Zamfara Widows Association, Hajiya Suwaiba Isa, and the patron, Alhaji Sa'idu Goshe, the women said they were not living a normal life and needed husbands to become whole.

"Many of us cannot afford two meals in a day because there are no men to support us," they said.

The patron said the association had over 8,000 women, comprising 5,380 divorcees, 2,200 widows, 1,200 orphans and 80 others, whom he said, were looking for men to marry.

He said the women also needed assistance to purchase household items such as beds, mattresses and other basic necessities needed to move to their husbands' houses.

Goshe appealed to the commission to assist the association in screening suitors for the women.

He said the screening would determine the suitors' health status, source of livelihood and ability to maintain a family.

Police Tear Gas 13,000 Teachers In Rivers

13000-teachers-in-rivers
Another big row broke out yesterday in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, between the government and the police, which smashed a ceremony for new teachers.
All was fine at the Liberation Stadium, where 13,000 teachers were set to collect their letters of engagement.
Suddenly, the police stormed the scene, teargassing and beating up the would-be teachers.
To Governor Rotimi Amaechi, the incident is a sign that the Niger Delta State is under police siege, with policemen on the orders of the Commissioner of Police, Mbu Joseph Mbu, attempting to make the state ungovernable.
Some of the teachers, who spoke with The Nation at the stadium, but pleaded not to be named for “security reasons”, said they were flogged by the policemen, who fired teargas canisters at them.
Many were injured in the stampede that followed.
The shocked teachers described their forcible dispersal as very unfortunate and least expected in a democracy.
The Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Richard Ofuru, asked the teargassed teachers to return home, assuring them that the government would find an alternative way of giving them their posting letters this week. They are to resume duties on Monday.
To the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Felix Obuah, the gathering was a ploy by the Amaechi-led government to use the “frustrated” youths as protesters on the streets of Port Harcourt against President Goodluck Jonathan.
The five anti-Amaechi lawmakers of the House of Assembly, in a joint statement, wondered why 13,000 persons would gather without police permit. They alleged that the teachers were mobilised by Amaechi to protest against President Jonathan.
The five anti-Amaechi legislators — Michael Okechukwu Chinda (Obio/Akpor 11), Evans Bipi (Ogu/Bolo), Kelechi Nwogu (Omuma), Martins Amaewhule (Obio/Akpor I) and Victor Ihunwo (Port Harcourt III) —are supporters of the Minister of State for Education, Chief Nyesom Wike, who is the grand patron of the Grassroots Development Initiative (GDI). Wike is interested in succeeding Amaechi, who insists that another ethnic group should be given a chance. Amaechi and Wike are from Ikwerre.
The Rivers Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari, described the police’s action as “impunity” and the action of retrogressive forces against development.
There had been announcements on radio and television stations by the Ministry of Education, inviting the teachers to the Liberation Stadium for a briefing and collection of their letters from 9 am. They started gathering inside the stadium as early as 7:30 am.
Policemen, in over 20 Toyota Hilux patrol vans, stormed the stadium around 8:30 am and chased out the teachers.
With the teachers out of the stadium, the main gate was locked. The policemen positioned their patrol vans in front of the gate and adjourning roads in Elekahia to prevent the teachers from regrouping.
The teachers, at 11:30 am, still gathered on the other side of the dualised road, directly opposite the stadium, discussing in groups.
Amaechi, who spoke through the Chief of Staff, Government House, Chief Tony Okocha, said Mbu and his men wanted to hold Rivers people to ransom.
The Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) chairman wondered how 13,000 newly-recruited teachers, who wanted to collect their posting letters, would be tagged potential protesters against President Jonathan. He described the police action as a “crude display of federal might, senseless, barbaric, shameful and the height of desperation”.
The governor said: “It is crass display of naked power. It is amazing that the government and the good people of Rivers State live under the siege of the police.
“The preponderance of that population is women. Imagine women falling over one another, because of the hot chase and canisters of teargas freely deployed by the police. This is barbaric. The CP (Mbu) ought to apply some tact, even in his mission to destroy Rivers State.”
Semenitari said: “Virtually, this is the impunity we have been talking about in Rivers State. It is clear to Rivers people that this is the action of retrogressive forces that are totally against development, because this is the first time that any government, whether state or federal, is employing 13,000 teachers at once.
“They are afraid and worried that the people will actually see that work is going on. Otherwise, why do they want to cut short people’s smile? These are people who have been unemployed.
“Nigeria is crying about unemployment, education system is in a mess and a government employs 13,00 teachers, trains them, wants to feed them into the system and somebody chooses to treat this with levity and to tear-gas the teachers and gives a very stupid excuse, saying that the teachers were there to protest against President Jonathan.
“What is the correlation between getting their employment letters and President Jonathan? Why do people continually want to drag President Jonathan’s name into everything? Is there something they are telling Rivers people that we do not know?”
Obuah said: “Wednesday’s gathering of teaching applicants at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt for the purported collection of employment letters was a ploy by the Amaechi-led government to use the frustrated youths as protesters on the streets of Port Harcourt against President Goodluck Jonathan.
“Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi is cashing in on the misfortune of hundreds of thousands of unemployed youths in the state to play politics.
“The applicants have long been interviewed, screened and employment letters given for the long-vaulted 13,000 teaching jobs by Governor Amaechi. We wonder why the helpless applicants were asked to again gather at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, if not for a sinister motive.
“Drawing from intelligence reports available, the only reason for the unnecessary gathering of the job hopefuls was to use them as tools to whip up sentiments against President Goodluck Jonathan, in sympathy with Governor Amaechi, in the feud between them and/or political crisis he is persistently and unrepentantly fueling and which is threatening the prevailing fragile peace in the state.
“While providing employment to our numerous qualified, but unemployed youths, whether for teaching in schools or elsewhere, is a welcome development, in the light of huge resources accruing to the state, but we believe that the recruitment could be done without subjecting these applicants to further suffering and danger by mobilising them from all across the state to gather at the Liberation Stadium unattended to.
“The best method to reach or communicate with the prospective employees by the relevant authorities is online transmission through the ICT, which is easier, cheaper and hitch-free for both parties. Anything less is suspect and poses danger and challenge to the law enforcement agents.”
The Rivers PDP chairman then lauded the police for their action.
Just on September 20, Mbu’s policemen harassed over 500 youths, aged between 14 and 21, who were on tour of projects in Port Harcourt with Amaechi, an initiative of Rotary International, District 9140, for young future leaders.
Three police vans with armed policemen were also detailed to follow the young persons everywhere they went with the governor.
The new police spokesman, Ahmad Kidaya Muhammad, said the government “failed” to inform the command about the gathering.
Muhammad, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), also a former police spokesman of Taraba and Gombe commands, said: “The Rivers State Government failed to inform the Rivers State Police Command of the event. It was deemed an illegal gathering. Police got intelligence report that there was going to be a breakdown of law and order.”
The Permanent Secretary of the Rivers Ministry of Education, Richard Ofuru, said announcements for the collection of letters had been on radio and television stations for some days. He wondered what information the police needed again.
It was gathered yesterday evening that the teachers had been directed to be checking their postings online, with some of them complaining of network challenge by the service providers.
Chairman, House Committee on Petroleum Resources (Downstream) Dakuku Peterside, who represent Andoni/Opobo-Nkoro Federal Constituency described the police action as the height of impunity and lawlessness.
He said: “It is now clear to everyone that Mbu by his actions and words is endangering our hard earned democracy and his command has also taken lawlessness to new heights.”
“I am very sure that Mbu is determined to make Rivers State ungovernable to impress his masters but I know that after all said and done, he will not succeed and he will surely occupy an infamous place in Nigeria’s history.
“What is most disturbing and disappointing is federal government’s silence on this police action in Rivers State despite its potential national security implications. And I really do not know for how long Rivers people will leave with this nightmare. Again, our people, almost on a daily basis these days, are reminded of how low we have sunk under Commissioner Mbu who is not even sparing our teachers”.

ASUU Strike‘ll Soon Be Called Off, Says Prof. Okojie

image
Prof. Julius Okojie, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC) says he is confident that the protracted strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) will soon be called off.
Okojie, who spoke on Wednesday in Abuja at a media parley with journalists, said the commission was doing everything within its powers to ensure a speedy resolution of the issues raised by ASUU so that students could return school.“We are part of the system and we understand the issues, we are meeting with members of the union all the time and the issues are being tackled.“So, we are optimistic the strike will soon be called off and our children can go back to school in the shortest possible time.’’
He also reacted to the call by ASUU for NUC to be scrapped, saying “the call is not in good faith as the commission has not gone to sleep over its duties”.
Also speaking on the recurrent disagreements between the commission and some professional bodies over accreditation and running of certain courses by some universities,Okojie acknowledged that there were issues that needed to be resolved between both parties.
“There is no country in the world where regulatory bodies and professional bodies go to regulate at the same time.
“So, it is true we are having problems with professional bodies in carrying out our mandate, but the issues too will soon be resolved and we can move on.
The executive secretary, who said that the commission had closed many faculties not fit to run courses in certain universities, admitted that; “it is not easy to be a regulator’’.
According to him, the commission was “silently regulating the system’’ having to also pay professional fees and encourage professors to do accreditation. (NAN)

ASUU Strike: We Are Tired Of Staying At Home – Students

image
With no end in sight to the over two months old strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), some Nigerian students spoke to The Nation on the effect of the strike and why the Federal Government should respond to the demands of ASUU with a view to making them return to the classroom.
Lekan Aluko, 300 Level, Microbiology (OAU)
My stay at home has been a terrible experience for me. While in school, I used to do some business like download of android games and sell to some interested students but that cannot work here. Instead, I walk around hopelessly not doing anything.
Chidinma Maduka, 100 Level, Culture and Tourism (UNIPORT)
The strike has been good and bad in several ways. The good effect of the strike is the opportunity I have to eat my mother’s food. This has made me gain more weight than I used to be. Another good effect is the fact that I have more time to sleep, think, learn some skills and continue writing my yet to be published book.
On the other hand, I should have rounded off my second semester examinations by now. Also, my modeling contract which was to start by July could not happen as the strike aborted it and no hope in sight.
Tolulope Owokade, 200 level, International Relations (OAU)
In fact, I am looking for a job to keep me from walking about aimlessly on the streets. When I was in school, I sell female wears, shower caps and undies and others as a source of generating income, but now I can’t do any of such here and hope of making money is not there at all. All I can do is to manage the little stipend I get from my parents.
Akhigbe Paul (UNIBEN)
I was in support of the strike, but now, I am no more in support of it. The strike has affected me negatively. There are a lot of things I should have done in school. The federal government should listen to what ASUU is demanding. After heeding to their request, the government should monitor everything ASUU does with the money and make sure they put in place everything they promised, like the infrastructure.
Naomi Olamakinde, 300 level, Economics (UNILAG)
This current ASUU Strike has provided me the opportunity to read at my own pace. I have also had the time to attend other programmes.
Abiodun Aderibigbe (FUTA)
The strike has affected me greatly, but I am in support of it, they have to fight for their right and we have to take it in good faith. Though I am not happy staying at home, but I am in support of it because these people have been working, they should be rewarded.
Uthman Bello, 200 level, Chemistry, University of Ibadan
This strike has brought boredom and idleness. I’ve forgotten many things we did within 3 week.
Olayinka Abdul (UNAB)
It has affected me negatively, it has really prolonged the period I am to use in school. I hope they can suspend the strike by reaching an agreement with ASUU soon, so that we can get back to our various schools.
Adeyemo Adeleye, 200 level, Mass Communication, (UNILAG)
The realization that this strike is still on seems to me that the authorities that are in power are not doing anything to avert this crisis. It has affected almost all undergraduates in a similar way. Academic situation in our tertiary institutions are grounded. This is sad.
Joel Otuyelu (UNILAG)
This strike has affected me positively; I have time to put some things in place.
Ihunanya Erondu, 300 level, (UNIPORT)
I hate staying at home. This strike has kept me at home against my own wish. I want the strike to be called off immediately.
Osatohanmhen Eghonghon Odigwe, (UNILAG)I just feel that the government does not truly see us as very important to the economy. I believe a better way can be used by ASUU to achieve their demands. With the way ASUU is pursuing our interest I’m not sure this is the best way.

Boko Haram Leader, Abubakar Shekau Appears In New Video, Says ‘I Am Alive’

image A video believed to have been released by the wanted leader of the Jama’atu Ahlis Sunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, also known as Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, surfaced in Maiduguri on Wednesday.
In it, a man claiming to be Shekau, debunked earlier claims by the Nigerian military that he died from gunshot wounds on August 19, 2013.
The then JTF spokesman in Borno State, Lt Col Sagir Musa, had in a statement said, “Intelligence report available to the JTF Operation Restore Order revealed that Shekau, the most dreaded and wanted terrorists’ leader may have died.
“He died of gunshots wounds received in an encounter with the JTF in one of their camps in Sambisa Forest on June 30 , 2013. Shekau was mortally wounded in the encounter and was sneaked into Amitchide-a border community in Cameroon for treatment from which he never recovered.”
But in the video, Shekau said the world “should know that he could not die except by the will of Allah.”
According to the British Broadcasting Corporation Hausa Service, the Boko Haram leader is seen in the video wearing a camouflage, seated and surrounded by dozens of hooded lieutenants.
Although no link was provided for readers to view the video, the BBC Hausa Service quoted one of its reporters, Aliyu Tanko, as saying the voice of the man in the video sounded like that of Shekau.
Tanko also claimed that the video emerged from a source previously used by the Boko Haram leader. Previous reports of Shekau’s death later proved to be unfounded.
Perhaps to prove that the video was recently recorded, Shekau claimed responsibility for the September 17, 2013 attack in Benisheik, Borno State, where about 142 people were either shot dead or slaughtered
An online news portal, Brimtime.com, however gave more details of what Shekau said in the latest video.
“Here I am, alive, hale and hearty, “ it quoted him as saying .
Shekau, according to the portal, said that President Goodluck Jonathan, United States President Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth, French President Francois Hollande and Sagir should hang their heads in shame for lying to the world that he had been killed.
The Boko Haram chief said, “ Sagir Musa should hang his head in shame, President Jonathan (of Nigeria) should hang his head in shame, President Obama should bury himself in shame, and President Francois Hollande shouldhang his head in shame, Queen Elizabeth (of England) should hang his head in shame.
“They said I am dead, but here I am. The world should know that I am alive and will only die at the appointed time. Everybody should be judged according to the dictates of his conscience.
“What I am doing is written in the Holy Qur’an and the Hadith and I will not stop. I challenge all the clerics of the world to question my deeds. Those underrating my capacity should have a rethink. I will never allow democracy to thrive.
“The concept of government of the people by the people for the people will never be possible and will never exist. Democracy shall be replaced only by the government of Allah, from Allah and for Allah.”
Insisting that the military will never subdue his group, he added, “Nigerian soldiers are late. After killing many of them in Monguno and Benisheik, we have snatched their armoured carriers and a Hilux van and then hoisted Islamic flags on them. We now move freely with them.”
Boko Haram, which claims to be fighting to create an Islamic state across Nigeria, has been blamed for many violent attacks which have killed nearly 2,000 people since 2011.
When one of our correspondents contacted the Director, Army Public Relations, Brig. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, he said, “On the issue of that man being alive, we are investigating it and we shall get back to you; we are checking the veracity of the story.”
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has deployed more troops in Borno State following the increase in terrorist activities.
A security source said on Wednesday that trucks carrying many troops were sighted along the Damaturu-Maiduguri Road on their way to Maiduguri on Tuesday.
We had reported on Tuesday that the military had deployed fighter jets in Borno , Yobe and Adamawa states.
Nigerian troops are battling Boko Haram insurgents, Al-Qaeda from Algeria, Mauritania, Somalia and the Niger Republic.
Investigations on Wednesday revealed that the deployment of additional troops was due to the fresh attacks being launched by the insurgents against villages and Army positions in the North-East.
A military source said, “The fight is still on but the Army doesn’t want people to know what is happening there. Several truck loads of soldiers have been moved to Borno State since the deployment of the Air Force fighter jets on Monday.
“I think, the plan is to conclude this fight once and for all and they are really serious about it; it could be because of what happened at Kasiya forest where the Army lost some men, arms and ammunition.”

Suspected Robber Hides Stolen Car In Church

wpid-police-logo.jpeg
The police in Oyo State have recovered a stolen Toyota Camry car in a church in Gbongan, Osun State.
The police said it was hidden by a suspected robber, Yinka Oyeniran.
It was alleged that Oyeniran was a member of a car-snatching syndicate.
He allegedly led three others on September 10, 2013 to a Christian centre around the Kute Wofun area of Ibadan, where the car with plate number Lagos, LSR 292 AT was snatched. They also took the victim’s phone, jewellery and N120,000.
The car, however, had a tracking device, through which the police monitored the car after the victim reported the incident.
The car was later demobilised but Oyeniran was said to have pushed it to a church in Akinlalu junction, Gbongan. He was said to have told the pastor of the church that he brought the vehicle for blessing.
It was learnt that Osun and Oyo states police command laid an ambush for Oyeniran. When he returned to take his loot, he was arrested.
Oyo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, Olabisi Ilobanafo, said an unregistered Honda motorcycle, a Nissan Sunny car with plate number Osun, AP 406 SGB, and a rectum cable wire were also recovered from the suspect.

£3,000 Visa Bond Plan For Nigeria Is Being Reviewed – UK

The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock, has said the British government is reviewing its plan to introduce a £3,000 visa bond scheme. He also said while there were security concerns in Nigeria, they were not overwhelming in many respects and could be managed.
Pocock said this on Wednesday when he visited the Nigerian Stock Exchange to ring the closing bell, and to discuss ways in which more British companies could be encouraged to invest in the nation’s capital market.
Reports had emerged earlier this year that the British government was planning to implement a new scheme under which some visitors from some Commonwealth countries, including Nigeria, would be asked to pay a £3,000 cash bond in return for visitor visas that allowed them to stay in the UK for up to six months.
“In the long run, we are interested in a system of bonds that deters overstaying and recovers costs if a foreign national has used our public services,” an unnamed Home Office official had been quoted as saying in June.
The development had resulted in an outcry by nationals of the affected countries with the Nigerian government calling on its British counterpart to renounce the policy.
However, the British High Commissioner, after ringing the closing bell at NSE in Lagos told journalists that, “We have made it very clear to our government in London that there is concern about this. So, this is being reviewed and considered in London as we speak now.”
Pocock, who said visas were issued to 125,000 Nigerians every year, added, “If we decide that this will become a policy we will tell, firstly then Nigerian government and secondly, the Nigerian people so everyone has all the information they need. This is not a major threat to Nigerians coming to the UK; that I can guarantee.”
According to Pocock, the scheme will not be a threat to Nigerians because even if it is implemented it will affect only a fraction of Nigerians who apply for UK visas.
He also clarified that, “The visa bond, as it is being called here, is not a £3,000 charge for a British Visa. That is not the case, it is not going to happen now and it is not going to happen in the future. Visa fee, which is what you pay for a visa, will not go to £3,000 or anywhere near it.”
