Kenya Mall Attack: Nigerian Shoppers Demand Better Security In Malls

westgate-mall-nairobi_700_0
Following the terrorist attacks on the Westgate Shopping Mall in Nairobi, Kenya that left scores of Kenyans and foreigners dead, shopping mall patrons in the country are apprehensive that a similar incident may happen in Nigeria because most of the plazas are not adequately secured.
Though activities at most of the malls in Lagos were not significantly affected by the events in the East African country, many of the customers who spoke with our correspondents were apprehensive of similar attacks, especially because of the high level of insecurity in some parts of the country.
A customer at the Ikeja Shopping Mall, who identified himself as Mr. John Akeigbe, decried the inadequate security in most Nigerian shopping malls and advised that something urgent must be done to protect shoppers from attacks.
“This is terrible. The state of security in shopping malls in the country is appalling. Are we not supposed to learn from what happened in Kenya? All everybody is after in Nigeria is making profit. They just believe that when they put air conditioners in their shops, people will patronise them,” he said.
Another customer, Mary Chinazor, said, “This is a wake-up call for us. I hope very soon we will not begin to be threatened by Boko Haram. Funny enough, most malls in Nigeria are not well secured.”
At The Palms in Lekki, one of our correspondents observed that customers and vehicles were moving in and out of the mall freely without security checks.
A banker, Mr. Odinaka Ejiofor, who said he was taken aback by the situation, decried the inadequate security at shopping malls in the country and urged the government to address the problem.
He said though shopping malls all over the world were usually not heavily guarded by security personnel, he cautioned that the recent development in Kenya called for a re-think.
Some of the customers told us that though the Kenyan incident was tragic, it had not affected their shopping habits.
One of them, Mr. Tunde Ige, said, “It doesn’t change anything for me. There is nothing different.”
Asked if he felt such an incident could happen in Nigeria, he said, “This is Africa, anything can happen.”
A manager at the Sony Centre in the mall, who gave his name simply as Wale, said since the news of the incident broke, there had been no noticeable change in the security setup there.
In terms of patronage, he said, “I have not heard customers talking about it (the attack), but from what I observed personally, there have been less people in the mall; you can see for yourself.”
However, Ms. Marvel Echigeme, who operates a Silverline Life-Style Stores, said she had not noticed any change in activities at the mall.
She added that she was not afraid of going to work at the mall everyday.
This, she explained, was because there was a good security structure at the mall already and staying at home or being afraid would not stop bad things from happening.
A manager at Twice As Nice, a boutique, Bola Oyegbola, shared a similar sentiment.
Oyegbola, who said there was no change in activities, explained that security was already efficient at the mall.
When our correspondent tried to reach the management of the mall for comment, he was asked to write a letter to that effect
Many of the customers, who spoke with us , urged the government as well as operators of the shopping malls across the country to improve on security ahead of the October 1 Independence Day celebrations.
They noted that shopping malls were usually crowded on public holidays and warned the government to ensure that adequate security was provided to forestall the repeat of the Kenya mall attack in Nigeria.
While some shoppers at the E-Centre Shopping Mall, popularly known as the Ozone Cinema, Sabo, Yaba, called on the federal and state governments to beef up security at the boarders, others said it was impossible to experience what happened in Kenya in Lagos.
A shopper, who identified himself as Toun Adeleke, said there was the need to scrutinise vehicles coming into Lagos State to avoid such an occurrence.
She said, “What happened in Kenya is not impossible in Nigeria. I’m sure the Kenyans were not expecting it, either. With the way terrorism is growing in Nigeria, such occurrence should not be ruled out.”
A student of University of Lagos, Kayode Adedayo, said the government should strengthen security at the boarders.
Speaking differently, one of the shop owners in the mall, Mr. Kingsley Anah, said, “I don’t see the Kenyan scenario playing out in Nigeria. It will be difficult for Boko Haram or any terrorist group to move around with such heavy weapons and resources in this city.”
Our correspondents’ checks, however, revealed that shopping malls in Lagos had already alerted their security arrangements as a result of the Kenyan attack.
One of our correspondents, who spoke with senior security officials at the Ikeja Shopping Mall, was told that security personnel had been put on the alert for any unforeseen development.
The shopping complex, according to a security supervisor who asked not to be named, will also leverage technology solutions such as CCTV to ensure that shoppers are safe while at the mall. -Punch

Torrential Rain Paralyses Activities In Ibadan

rainfall
A heavy rain in Ibadan, which started on Sunday evening, has paralysed the activities of the residents of the city.
The rain, which has yet to stop on Monday evening, caused the flooding of several bridges across Ibadan.
The submerged bridges include the 7up/Elebu bridge in Oluyole Estate, which prevented residents, including pupils and government workers, from leaving their homes.
Some of the people said however, bemoaned the sudden increase in the cost of transportation, adding that most commercial motorists even declined to convey people to long distances.
Mrs Blessing Joshua, a housewife, lamented about the continued downpour since Sunday evening.
“What kind of rain is this? I went to the market to buy some foodstuff, only for me to come back empty-handed because most of the sellers were not present.
“Even the few available traders increased the cost of things in the market; I hope this is not the seven-day rain which, as some people predicted, would fall in September,’’ she said.
Mr Abdullateef AbdulGafar, a commercial motorcyclist, said: “I would not have gone to pick my customer if he had not paid me for my services earlier.’’
Mrs Rasheedat Rufail, a teacher of Ansar-Ud-Deen High School in the Liberty area of Ibadan, said that the school’s academic activities had been paralysed due to the deluge.
She said that most of the teachers and students failed to come to school on Monday. (NAN)

Arsenal Announce £242.8m Turnover

arsenal-test-2 (AFP) – Arsenal on Monday reported a rise in turnover to £242.8 million ($389 million, 288 million euros) as the Gunners claimed their improved finances was a significant factor in the club record signing of Mesut Ozil.
Despite reduced profits due to a drop in income from player sales and an increase in players’ wages, Arsenal saw overall turnover rise in the year ending May 31 2013 from £235.3 million the previous year.
Commercial and retail revenue rose 20 percent to £62 million, boosted by the new sponsorship deal with Emirates airline, and Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis said the club’s strong financial position meant they are now able to compete for the likes of Germany playmaker Ozil, who cost £42.5 million to lure from Real Madrid.
“The signing of Ozil for a club record fee is a significant step for us,” Gazidis said in the annual accounts.
“This signing was a direct result of all the hard work we have put in over recent years to build the commercial capability of the club to deliver the consistent revenues and financial strength required to compete for the world’s best players.
“That said, we will continue to stand by our principles in terms of nurturing young talent. That has been very evident with our extensions to the contracts of key young players over the last year and the emergence of teenagers Serge Gnabry and Gedion Zelalem into the first team squad.
“This is a key component of what we stand for at Arsenal Football Club and that will continue to be the case.”
Arsenal’s profits before tax dropped to £6.7 million from £36.6 million the previous year due to salary increases and less income from player sales, with Ozil’s transfer fee not included in the latest accounts.
Wages were up to £155 million from £143 million as Arsenal maintained pace with the highest payers in the Premier League.
Arsenal still have the highest cash reserves of any club in the Premier League, totalling £119.7 million, with a further £35 million held back as debt service reserves.

Birthday Tragedy: Girl Raped, Fiance Shot In The Head

Tragedy struck at the university town of Nsukka, EnuguState, weekend, as unidentified gunmen raped a young girl, who was celebrating her birthday with her lover boy, who was also shot in the head.
Vanguard gathered that the incident occurred last Saturday, when the girl’s boyfriend, identified as Sunday Ozioko, 30, took out his lover in his new Toyota Camry saloon car as part of the birthday celebration.
It was learned that the gunmen, who rode in a motorcycle, blocked the vehicle along Orba Road at 6.30p.m., took over the car and sped off through Orba Market to Obollo-Afor.
They stopped at Alor-AnoCommunitySecondary School, raped the girl and shot her fiancé, who survived the attack, but was said to be in critical condition.
A source told Vanguard that when the two gunmen were through at 9:30p.m., they gave the victim N500, having been dropped off at Odolu in KogiState.
Realising that the girl could identify then later, the bandits allegedly made for the girl again, who was able to escape through a path that led her to a crusade ground, where Adonai Faith Assembly was having a vigil.
Rescue
The obviously horrified girl was said to have narrated her ordeal to the congregation, who she told her fiancee was still lying in his pool of blood.
According to a source, the pastor of the church immediately swung into action, reached out to the police at Nsukka Urban, who quickly rushed him to BishopShanahanHospital, Nsukka.
Efforts made to speak with the victim at his hospital private ward proved abortive as his relations barred press men from seeing him.
Sunday Ozioko has, however, been transferred to UNTH, Enugu, for a surgical operation on his head.
Enugu State Police spokesman, Ebere Amarizu, said police were on top of the situation and vowed that everything would be done to track down the bandits.

Lagosians spend N36billion annually on parties - Governor Fashola Reveals

Lagos state governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola, this weekend revealed that more than N36 billion is spent by Lagosians annually to organise parties. The governor said this at the 4th edition of the Lagos Ignite Enterprise and Employability project, a joint youth empowerment programme between the government and the Afterschool Graduate Development Centre, AGDC.

Governor Fashola said:
“This was the study of night life carried out by the government in five local governments including Agege, Mushin, Ifako-Ijaiye and Ikeja and another local government. It showed that more than N36 billion was spent on 1555 parties held within the period. We did a study between October and November last year. We studied from Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, three days every week for four weeks which was 12 nights. In 12 nights, 1555 parties were held in these local governments. In terms of drinks, food and all other engagements during such parties, about N1.2 billion was spent and when we dis-aggregated them we saw how much went to DJ, MC, food and drinks, the total picture in the state now and I don’t want to give you a wrong number but it’s something in the region of about N3 billion monthly on that side of our life and people are playing and impacting on that side of our economy.
The governor further stated that Aso Ebi alone gulped a minimum of N1.2billion monthly.
