Gunmen Kidnap Archbishop , Wife In Rivers

Archbishop Ignatius Kattey

The Archbishop of Niger Delta Province of the Anglican Communion in Nigeria, Archbishop Ignatius Kattey, and his wife, Beatrice, were on Friday night kidnapped by gunmen.
Kattey and his wife were abducted at Aleto in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State on his way to Port Harcourt at about 10.30pm.

It was learnt that the cleric, who is the Dean, Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion; second in hierarchy to the Primate of the Anglican Church Nigeria, was going to Port Harcourt to receive a dignitary when the gunmen struck.

While the archbishop's wife was later abandoned, the clergyman was taken away to an unknown destination.

An eyewitness account said the bandits took the cleric into the bush around Eleme area.

"The Archbishop of Niger Delta Province of the Anglican Communion and second in hierarchy to the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Anglican Communion, Archbishop Ignatius Kattey, and his wife, Mrs. Beatrice, were abducted at about 10:30pm on Friday.

"The wife was later abandoned with their car. They were abducted on their way to Port Harcourt by Aleto bridge," a close source to the cleric said.

When contacted, the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Angela Agabe, confirmed that the incident took place at about 10.30pm in Aleto, Eleme.

Agabe explained that the hot chase from the police forced the hoodlums to abandon the cleric's wife and his car.

"It is true that the archbishop and his wife were kidnapped on Friday around 10:30pm. But the hot chase from the police forced them (kidnappers) to abandon his wife and his car.

"The police are combing the bushes in the area now in search of the Archbishop. We are also working toward arresting those responsible for the act," Agabe said.

The state police spokesperson assured that the cleric would soon be rescued based on the measures put in place by security agents in the state.

9yr Old Boy Macheted To Death By Fulani Herdsmen

A nine-year-old boy, Obushi Maikasuwa, of Angora village in Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, has been macheted to death by Fulani herdsmen.

Reports from the village indicated that the incident occurred around 6.00 p.m during the invasion of the deceased's parents' farm by Fulani herdsmen.
Investigations further revealed that the deceased's father, Maikasuwa Baba, and his children were in the farm when some Fulani herdsmen brought their cows into the farm and started destroying the produce.

It was gathered that when the deceased and his elder brothers tried to prevent the cattle from destroying their father's farm, one of the attackers removed his cutlass and hit the boy in the neck. He was said to have died instantly.

Witnesses told Saturday Tribune that the deceased father, shortly after the incident, took the corpse to the Divisional Police Office (DPO) at Garaku, the local government headquarters. It was gathered that the assailants ran away with their cattle after the act.

It was also gathered that the assailants killed a woman, Bilikisu Abubakar, who was working on her farm. She was rushed to General Hospital, Garaku, where she finally gave up the ghost.

The Police have since arrested One Musa Ardo, 22, and investigations were said to be ongoing.

Jealous Lover Stabs Girlfriend To Death

What could have led a young lover to stab his girlfriend to death with a broken bottle?

This is a nut for the police to crack in the riverside of Bomadi, headquarters of Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, where a lover boy, identified as Lucky Ndakwe, allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death with a broken bottle.

The incident, according to a reliable source, subsequently, threw the entire town into confusion last Tuesday night as aggrieved youths took to the streets to demand justice for the deceased.

The assailant, Ndukwe, it was gathered, confronted his girlfriend at about 7.30 p.m. at the town's waterside over suspicion of cheating on him.
The issue was said to have degenerated to some shouting match between the two after which anger took the better part of the jealous lover boy who was said to rain some slaps on the girl.

The slaps, it was gathered, came as a result of the lady's attempt to walk out on her lover.

The source said "It was when the girl was trying to fight back that the boy rushed for a bottle of beer, hit it on her head before stabbing the girl. When he saw that the girl was bleeding profusely, he attempted to run but was apprehended by the people around."

It was gathered that the girl died on her way to hospital.

The news of the lady's demise subsequently led to protests by the youth in the area.

"There was confusion everywhere because the people who were angry and wanted to lynch the young man were prevented by security operatives. The people were angry because they felt the girl tried to help the boy in his business and did not deserve to be treated that way by the boy," the eyewitness said.

My Husband Kidnapped Our Son For N51m Ransom –Wife

An estranged housewife, Mrs. Titi Jamil, has accused her, husband, Ahmed
Jamil, of kidnapping their son and collecting N51 million as ransom.

Titi, who appeared before an Ikeja Customary court, on Monday, pleaded
for the dissolution of her marriage on the grounds that it lacked love and
that her husband, whom she allegedly paid N1 million monthly salary, was
only after her money.

She maintained that her husband sold their house in London for N68
million without giving her or either of their two children part of the
money.

Narrating that she met her husband in London, Titi told the court that
the couple had a traditional marriage and that her husband, who was
absent in court, converted her from Islam to Christianity.

Describing her husband as prayerful and caring in the early period of the
marriage, Titi said Ahmad later turned vicious, beating her during
pregnancy even as he stopped praying.

She said, "The only reason why he married me was because of my
father's money. He was God-fearing when I met him. We never missed
devotional hours. But after our marriage, he showed his true colour as he
stopped praying and began to beat me even during pregnancy.

"Ahmad kidnapped my son and asked for a ransom of 210,000 pounds
after I left his house with my children.

My elder sister paid the money
into his mother's account in London and he released my son to me after
his mother confirmed to him that the money had been paid.

The bailiff told the court that all efforts to reach Ahmad proved
abortive, saying his ferocious dogs scared visitors to his residence.

Court president, Mr. Ayo Ipaye, noted that the respondent has not
showed up in court since the case began.

Ipaye said that since the petitioner has given evidence before the court
and the respondent has refused to show up – "it is only right to give
judgment."

He ordered the dissolution of the marriage and granted custody of the
children to their mother.

Child trafficking: 2 women arrested in Calabar with 5 day-old-baby

The state NIS Comptroller, Mr Samuel Igoche, said the suspects include a legal practitioner, Mrs Ngala Nungu, 47, and Mrs Mende Cecilia, 54.

Igoche told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that Nungu claimed to have delivered the baby at a herbal clinic at Okitipupa in Ondo state.

He said that Nungu claimed she spent N1.5 million to buy herbal medicine from the lady who owns the herbal clinic.

He said that investigation conducted by immigration officials showed that Nungu never gave birth to the baby, adding that the child in her custody was from a source she refused to identify.

Narrating her story to NAN, Nungu said she got information about the herbal clinic in Cameroun.

She said she borrowed the money she used in buying the drugs which made her pregnant.

"I came to Nigeria, met the woman who owns the herbal clinic and bought the drugs. One month after taking the drugs, I met with my husband and became pregnant,'' she said.

Nungu said that she had not giving birth before and fed the baby with baby's food because her breast had no milk.

She appealed to men of the NIS to release her and her baby to return home.

Her friend Mende corroborated the story, saying that she witnessed the delivery of the baby.

"I heard her screaming while in the delivery room and later heard the cry of a baby; I rushed in and saw the new born baby who was still covered with blood.

Students Don’t Want Us To Call Off Our Strike -ASUU

ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Isa Fagge

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has said it is continuing its nationwide strike on the advice of university students.
In a telephone interview with Punch, the President of the union, Dr. Isa Fagge, said students were tired of the incessant industrial actions by the university lecturers due to the Federal Government's failure to implement the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.

Fagge said the union had decided to heed the advice of the students to continue the strike until the Federal Government fully implemented the agreement.

"Our students have come out to say they don't want us to call off the strike until the Federal Government answers us, because they don't want us to call off now and later we go back to strike again. So, we are heeding the advice of our students," he said.

On the complaint by the Federal Government that it lacked the funds to implement the agreement, Fagge said it was not all about money, noting that government did not need funds to start implementing some parts of the agreement.

"There are issues and agreement they can implement without money. Why don't they begin with those ones?" he asked.

He added that it was unfortunate that the government had pulled out of dialogue with ASUU, stating that the union would not be intimidated.

He said, "Now, government has pulled out of the dialogue. We thought we were the ones going on strike, but now government has also gone on strike."

Last Thursday, university students under the auspices of the National Association of Nigerian Students reportedly staged a peaceful protest in Ado-Ekiti and flayed the Federal Government for failing to honour the agreement it had with ASUU since 2009.

The students, who were from public universities, threatened to disrupt activities of private universities, adding that the government was not bothered about their plight because children of government officials were studying either in private universities or studying overseas.

The university lecturers began an indefinite strike on July 1 and have been demanding full implementation of the agreement ASUU had with the Federal Government in 2009, which among other things include the UNESCO-recommended 26 per cent budgetary allocation for education. However, the government said it could not implement the agreement, and is seeking re-negotiation.

The Federal Government, last Wednesday, accused ASUU of being unrealistic by continuing its nationwide strike and asked it to rethink its demands, considering other commitments government has.

The Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, who gave government's position on the strike when he briefed journalists at the end of the weekly meeting of the Federal Executive Council, said apart from security, education was one of the sectors the government had expended a lot of money

The ‘kid’ in Wizkid

It all started as a joke, he was simply somebody who nobody would give a second glance. That era has gone. Today, he is an A-list act, headlining shows, getting endorsement deals and basically, making millions. He is called Wizkid.

No doubt, the young lad has paid his dues as it were, for few years back, nobody would have thought the 'errand boy' would grow to become this big. Indeed, his talents and luck, shone and now, Wizkid is a superstar.

But it seems stardom is getting to his head.

Recently, the Internet was agog when the singer called a fan 'broke' for correcting a grammatical error he made.

The singer posted on his instagram that he was about to perform at a wedding with 'an hangover'. The crime of the fan was telling Wizkid the correct thing to say was 'a hangover'.

His reply angered fans who quickly reminded him that he was not born rich and it was the 'broke' fans who made him who he is at the moment.

Wiz hasn't only been misbehaving online. The kid took his arrogance to another height when he allegedly poured his drink on a fan in London.

Speculation has it that all the fan did was to reach out to Wizkid to greet him. Probably trying to impress an American hip-hop sensation, Wiz allegedly called the fan, Oloshi (Idiot). The shocked American took to instagram to talk about Wiz's atiitude.

Although the kid was lucky in London, luck ran out when he allegedly tried ignoring fans who had been waiting to get a glimpse of him in Lagos. This time the fans physically reacted to his arrogance.

Dear Wiz was reportedly stoned by angry fans at the VFS Global Services, Lekki Phase 1 over the his arrogant attitude and his refusal to part with some naira notes despite the much accolades he got from the cheering crowd who were so elated to catch a glimpse of him.

Apparently our wonder boy was in a foul mood or perharps, he wasn't given a visa for he 'boned' and shunned the cheering crowd as he walked arrogantly into the waiting Porsche Cayenne.

It was gathered that Wizkid's silence and arrogance got the cheering fans angrier and they stoned him as he drove off. Unfortunately for Wizkid, one of the stones hit his side mirror but he didn't bother stopping anyway.

At the moment, not a few are angry with the kid and his attitude. Some fans told Saturday Beat that it was high time they "boycotted Wizkid."

Another fan Reginald said, "Wizzy is just a kid and that is what he will be until he grows up! Let's keep praying he grows soon."

I had a vision my marriage would crash –Ara

Drummer girl, Ara, tells Ademola Olonilua about her career, relationship and life as a single mother

Before your hit song with Tuface, you were quiet on the entertainment scene, what have you been up to lately?

I was taking time out to heal from my broken marriage. I have since released another video, Yanke. I also just recently produced my first movie, Osunfunke.

Are you now healed from the trauma of your failed marriage?

I am healed.

Are you in any relationship at the moment?

Yes. I won't give a name. I really I don't want to talk about him.

Why did you go into movies?

My mission is to promote the culture and tourism of the different states in Nigeria through my movies. The Osun State was the first state we signed with. I am an icon and my brand is associated with culture. I have a voice and face that is recognised and respected. I have represented Nigeria internationally at different levels and made Nigeria proud. All I am asking is for like minds like me to work with me. I also urge people who have passion for their culture and for sponsors to also come on board.

Are you leaving music for movies then?

No, I am not leaving music. I am combining both of them.

Why did you start with movie production, one would have thought you would begin with acting first?

I also acted in the movie. I played the lead female in the movie I just produced. The lead actor is Ricardo Agbor. I did some stage plays back in school too.

How was your experience as a movie producer?

It was hectic but very interesting. I love it. The challenges were not so many because I was prepared. The most difficult aspect was getting funds for the project but after that, it wasn't much of a challenge. I had it all planned out.

Are you still as good with the drum as you were when you were younger?

Yes. I am still exceptionally good with my talking drum. The older the wine, the better it tastes.

How come you no longer wear your long braids trademark?

I don't carry it as often as I used to but my clients have to pay specifically for it. The price depends on who is talking to us. I also had to cut my hair because it started breaking off. After braiding continuously for over 12 years, the hair started rebelling.

One would have thought you would have launched your child's acting career with your new movie?

There was really no role as such for him.

Is he showing signs of going into entertainment?

He is showing signs already. He has ear for beats but he is not a good dancer. He loves singing. He loves drums; especially set drums and talking drum. He is five years old. He can't play the talking drum very well yet.

How do you juggle your music career which is mostly stage performance with movie production and motherhood?

Trust me it is not easy but I am dedicated and focused. I spend quality time with my son so when I have to travel or leave home, he understands and we keep in touch on phone over 20 times a day. My mother and elder sister also help me a lot. He also has a nanny.

What other projects are you involved in at the moment?

I have a  talk show "Ara Special" and that's the latest from me. We are shooting the pilot edition shortly.

Did you always want to be a singer?

A singer was what I wanted to be. Well, I would have been working in the house of God. I would have been a prophetess.

Why a prophetess, do you see visions?

Yes.

Don't you think you would have done better then as a prophetess giving the fact that pastors now own private jets?

You are looking at the financial gains, I am not. I never did.

Did you see a vision that your marriage would break-up?

I saw it.

Has your vision helped you in your career?

Yes it has. It has also helped people around me too.

Can you share some testimonies?

I wouldn't want to. They are personal.

Football Premiership fever: Sudden deaths among fans rising

Disenchanted by the effects of soccer maladministration in the country, Nigerian football-loving fans shifted their attention to Europe, where football leagues are better organised. During football seasons, Nigerian fans watch thrilling soccer matches with frenzy.

A recent trend has, however, shown that the passion associated with soccer could come with some health implications. Ironically, it is not only the players on the pitch that are susceptible to injuries or fatalities. People who watch football matches in the safety of their homes or at viewing centres also run the risk of injuries or fatalities.

On the evening of Sunday, September 1, 2013, when many people were thanking God for seeing a new month, 60-year-old Murtala William, an avid football fan, went to a viewing centre some metres from his house at Dolphin Estate, Ikoyi, Lagos. William's favourite club, Arsenal, was playing against Tottenham in a Premier League fixture. Although Arsenal won the game by a lone goal struck by Olivier Giroud in the first half, William never lived to celebrate the win. He died while watching the match.

The tension-soaked game was filled with many breathtaking episodes; a miss here, a near-goal there. The match, which was replete with several nail-biting dramas, left not a few fans glued to the edges of their seats.

On Tuesday, our correspondent visited William's home where some women sat around the deceased's wife to sympathise with her. The deceased's sister spoke with our correspondent and shed light on what occurred on the fateful day at the viewing centre. She said, "My brother was perfectly fine when he left home. He went to the viewing centre not far from here. He was well known there. He was very passionate about football. He loved it very much.

"I am not sure about the stage the match got to when the man who sat beside him realised something was amiss. The man told us that my brother would always offer an opinion excitedly on match days. But he suddenly realised that my brother was not talking, he turned towards him and realised his head was on the shoulders of the next person to him. It was at this point that they tried to revive him.

When our correspondent visited the viewing centre, it was under lock and key.

William's sister also explained that she was not aware if her brother had a heart disease that could have been triggered by the excitement of the football match.

"He had a medical check-up recently and there was no word about a heart problem. But we all know that that kind of problem could come up anytime," she said.

The woman explained that the hospital did not offer an explanation as to what killed her brother. "No autopsy was done because he was buried within 24 hours according to Islamic rites," she said.

William's case brings to fore the impact football excitement, passion and tension has on fans' wellbeing. On a major match day in viewing centres, it is very common to see football lovers crammed in congested rooms with poor ventilation. Hot arguments and shouts occur during matches involving big teams such as Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Tottenham, Bayern Munich, Borrusia Dortmund, AC Milan, Inter Milan, among others.

A 44-year-old football fan, Seni Folawoye, who nearly died when he developed a partial stroke at a viewing centre in Surulere, Lagos, relived his experience.

He said he was recently discharged from the Randle General Hospital, Surulere, Lagos after recovering from a partial stroke he suffered in April 2013.

Folawoye told Saturday PUNCH, "It was a match between Chelsea and Manchester United. I cannot really recall what happened that day.

"I knew I had high blood pressure before that day but I had no idea it was such a big deal or that excitement during a football match could trigger a health problem."

Seni's brother, Akin, explained that he was at the same viewing centre where the incident occurred.

He said, "My brother slumped when the game was in second-half. The tension and excitement at the centre was very high that day. He could have died if there was nobody around to quickly help him."

Seni said he would think twice before going to watch any match that would excite him because he was under constant medication and observation.

In 2012, a lecturer at the Creative Arts Department, University of Lagos, Akoka, Mr. E. A. Bassey, died of heart attack during a European Championship match between Chelsea and Bayern Munich.

He was said to have slumped and died during the tension-soaked match which Chelsea won 4-3. It could not be confirmed which of the teams Bassey was supporting.

The same day the UNILAG lecturer died, a football fan, identified simply as Obi, was reportedly stabbed in the eye after shoutng 'Down Chelsea!' at a viewing centre at Alafia area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. A hotel manager was also stabbed to death in November 2012 by  football fans at his hotel along the Isheri-Igando Road, Lagos for asking them to vacate their seats during a crucial match.

"There are many ways one can die while watching club matches, especially in Lagos," a die-hard football fan told Saturday PUNCH at a viewing centre at Ojodu, Lagos.

There are also dangers that have to do with the animosity that may develop between fans of rival clubs. A commercial motorcycle rider narrated to our correspondent how a young lady and her male companion were attacked after a late night match at a viewing centre in January 2013.

A viewing centre owner at Ketu, Soji Adelupo, explained to Saturday PUNCH that there are some areas of Lagos that a lily-livered businessman dare not establish a centre for watching club matches.

Adelupo said, "Six years ago when I wanted to establish my viewing centre, I was living in Mushin. But I knew that if I wanted to make it a place for people to watch their matches in peace, I needed to move out of the area. I left the area and came to Ketu because I knew the mentality of youths living in Mushin. I knew there was no way I could avoid violence. They are very passionate and violent when it comes to their clubs.

"Right now, it is not that fight does not break out once in a while where I am currently at Ketu but we are able to control such fights. I don't allow people to bring bottled drinks or beer inside my centre because I know that will readily become weapons if a fight breaks out."

A former doctor of the nation's female youth team, Falconets, Dr. Bukola Bojuwoye, who specialises in sports medicine, spoke on the risks associated with watching tension-soaked matches at viewing centres. Bojuwoye said it would not be surprising if someone with a heart problem suffers a heart attack during matches with high stress level.

He said, "What you must understand is that everyone has his own medical peculiarity. But an increase in tension will automatically bring about increase in heartbeat rate which in turn puts pressure on the heart and may trigger a heart attack. For instance, I will not watch a football match that will increase my stress level because I know what impact that may have on my heart and blood pressure.

"The fact that people watch some of these matches with others at viewing centres may increase their risk of suffering heart attack because anxiety may be transferred from one person to another. It is not that watching a match alone at home does not have its risks. For instance, what if one suffers a heart attack when no one is around?

"There is the need for people to go for comprehensive health checks regularly to know the state of their cardiovascular system."

However, Saturday PUNCH findings showed that Nigeria is not the only country where watching football comes with attendant health risks.

In Europe and the United States, football-induced heart attacks are already getting the attention of medical researchers.
