TOO SEXY: Iranian Councilor Banned for Model-Like Looks

Despite promises made by Iran's new President, Hassan Rowhani, that women's civil rights will improve under his government, a city councilor has been barred from office for being "too sexy".

Nina Siakhali Moradi was prevented from taking up a post on the city council in Qazvin, the ancient capital of the Persian Empire, 100 miles north west of Tehran, after her election was overturned by religious conservatives.

Even with more than 10,000 votes in the June election, putting her 14th out of 163 candidates and winning her a council seat, the 27-year-old engineer and website designer had her political career cut short because she was deemed too attractive to take up the post.

"We don't want a catwalk model on the council," a senior official in Qazvin told local press.

Moradi ran under the slogan "Young ideas for a young future," pushing for better women's rights in Qazvin, the restoration of the old city and greater youth involvement in town planning.

She had been vetted and approved as a candidate by Iran's judiciary and intelligence services.

Her liberal views appeared popular with the electorate. Moradi's campaign posters showed her wearing strict hijab without a strand of hair on display.

Despite this, conservative religious groups launched protests to demand her disqualification as soon as her election was confirmed.

In a letter to the governor of Qazvin, a coalition of religious groups condemned the "vulgar and anti-religious" posters and said they breached Islamic law.

News website IranWire reported that there were other objections to her campaign. According to the website, her headquarters became a gathering place for local young people, whose behavior and clothing provoked criticism from her opponents, mostly older conservative men.

The complaint was challenged but ultimately upheld. She was disqualified for not "observing the Islamic norms."

Citing local media, IranWire reported that authorities had also confiscated the campaign posters of two other female candidates, Maryam Nakhostin-Ahmadi and Shahla Atefeh, and detained both for questioning.

President Rowhani is expected to bring a new era in women's rights. In a televised debate during his election campaign, he announced: "I will form a women's affairs ministry to return their trampled rights to them."

Dua (Supplication) – The Tool for Asking what you want…

Trials, tribulations and challenges are part of every person's life. However, to counter that, Allah has provided us a very powerful tool – and that is the tool of dua or asking Allah for help and his mercy when we need it. And we need it all the time…

However, to understand trials and tribulations that we face in our daily lives, we also need to understand the topic of "Sins" and how our sins may be related to our trials and tribulations.

The better we understand the ghastly nature of our sins, and the rate at which we accumulate them, along with their undesirable impact on our daily lives and the hereafter, the more it can propel us away from committing sins in general and the more it will drive us to seek forgiveness for our sins – through making the right Duas for us and for others.

Ibn Qayyim provided one of the great descriptions of sins and the impact of sins in this life and after. Here is a very short summary of what he compiled about how our sins impact our lives. [islam-qa.com]

Sins deprive a person of provision (rizq) in this life. In Musnad Ahmad it is narrated that Thawbaan said: "The Messenger of Allah (SAWS) said: 'A man is deprived of provision because of the sins that he commits.'" (Narrated by Ibn Maajah, 4022, classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah).
A sinful person experiences a sense of alienation (indifference) with his Lord, and between him and other people. One of the salaf had said that he could see the impact of disobedience to Allah (in some aspects of his daily life).
A person who commits sins sees that things become difficult for him. In any matter that he turns to, he finds the way blocked or he finds it difficult. By the same token, for the one who fears Allah, things are made easy for him.
'Abd-Allaah ibn 'Abbaas said: "Good deeds make the face light, give light to the heart, and bring about ample provision, physical strength and love in people's hearts. Bad deeds make the face dark, give darkness to the heart, and bring about physical weakness, a lack of provision and hatred in people's hearts."
Sin breeds sin until it dominates a person and he cannot escape from it. Sin weakens a person's willpower. It gradually strengthens his will to commit sin and weakens his will to repent until there is no will in his heart to repent at all… so he seeks forgiveness and expresses repentance, but it is merely words on the lips, like the repentance of the liars, whose hearts are still determined to commit sin and persist in it. This is one of the most serious diseases that is likely to lead to doom. He becomes desensitized and no longer find sins abhorrent, so it becomes his habit, and he is not bothered if people see him committing the sin or talk about him.

So, we can easily see that by engaging in sins, we are not only making the prospects of our after life (integral part of Islamic faith) bleak but sins can greatly and actively contribute to the difficulties of our daily lives.

Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): "Whatever of good reaches you, is from Allah, but whatever of evil befalls you, is from yourself…" [al-Nisa' 4:79]

Whether we encounter challenges in earning a living, in our family affairs, or other matters of life, the burden of sins greatly inhibits us from seeking the ultimate blessings of Allah and to have the potential of leading a good life in this world and the hereafter.

As for making Dua and the enormous potential it holds to help us ask for forgiveness and other things, the following provides a short description.

The following are some of the prophet's sayings about making Dua to Allah.

Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The dua' of any one of you will be answered so long as he does not seek to hasten it, and does not say, 'I made dua' but I had no answer.'" (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5865; Muslim, 2735, from the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah).

In the hadeeth which was narrated by al-Tirmidhi from Abu Hurayrah, who said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: 'There is no man who prays to Allah and makes dua' to Him, and does not receive a response. Either it will be hastened for him in this world, or it will be stored up for him in the Hereafter, so long as he does not pray for something sinful, or to cut the ties of kinship, or seek a speedy response.' They said, 'O Messenger of Allah, what does seeking a speedy response mean?' He said, 'Saying, "I prayed to my Lord and He did not answer me."'" (Al-Tirmidhi, 3859; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Tirmidhi, 852).

Some people follow practices that are not sanctioned by the Quran or Hadith such as repeating some of Allah's names a few times. A number of scholars have said that "The words mentioned in the question are phrases that are narrated in the Qur'aan and Sunnah, but saying that they must be repeated [so many] number of times is an innovated matter which should not be followed. Rather we should mention them during our dua's and address Allah by all His beautiful names, without singling out some names or stating that they should be recited a certain number of times or at certain times, making that up ourselves. We should adhere to what was narrated in sharee'ah concerning certain times, places or situations connected to a particular dua'; if no such details were narrated in sharee'ah then we should not make them up ourselves because that is encroaching upon the rights of Prophethood.

In the hadeeth it says: "One of you may be answered so long as he is not hasty and says, 'I said dua' but I got no response.'" Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 6340; Muslim, 2735.

In Saheeh Muslim (2736) it says: "A man's (dua's) may be answered so long as it does not involve sin or severing the ties of kinship or hastening." It was said: "O Messenger of Allah, what does hastening mean?" He said: "When he says, 'I made dua' and I made dua' but I did not see any response,' so he gets discouraged and stops making dua'."

The dua' should not involve sin or severing of the ties of kinship, as stated in the hadeeth quoted above: "A man's (dua's) may be answered so long as he does not involve sin or severing the ties of kinship …"

According to the hadeeth of Abu Hurayrah: "Make dua' to Allah when you are certain of a response." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami', 245.

The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Know that Allah does not answer a dua from a distracted heart." Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 3479; classed as hasan by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami', 245.

In the hadeeth it says: [The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)] mentioned the man who undertakes a lengthy journey and is disheveled and covered with dust, and he stretches his hands towards heaven saying, 'O Lord, O Lord,' when his food is haraam, his drink is haraam, his clothes are haraam. He is nourished with haraam, so how can he be granted a response?

Boko Haram Deputy Leader And His Father Killed In Borno

A key member of the Islamist militant group, Boko Haram, Momogu Bama, has been killed by the Joint Task Force in Borno State.

He met his death the same day with his father,   Alhaji Abatcha Flatari, described as one of the spiritual leaders of the sect in an operation  between the sect members and the JTF operatives in Bama.

Momogu,  the second-in-command to the sect's leader, Abubakar Shekau,  had a  N25m  bounty put on his head by security agencies for information that
could lead to his arrest.

The Director of Defence Information, Brig.- Gen Chris Olukolade, who confirmed his killing, described him as a vicious Boko Haram leader who took delight in personally slaughtering  the sect's victims.

He added that  Momogu  was the expert  in charge of  mounting  anti-aircraft weapons for  the sect and coordinating  members  in Yobe and Adamawa  states.

Olukolade said in an electronic mail on Wednesday to one of our correspondents that Momogu was identified by insurgents arrested during one of the recent encounters between the JTF  and the insurgents in Bama.

He said, "As troops intensify pursuit of terrorists who have been unleashing mayhem in Borno and Yobe communities, the death of Momogu  Bama, said to be the Second-in-Command to  Shekau  has been confirmed by other arrested terrorists. This followed encounters with the terrorists around the Bama corridor.

"Momogu Bama personally led the attacks against troops and innocent citizens in the communities of Yobe and Adamawa.  A specialist in manning the anti-aircraft guns of the group, he is known to be vicious and heartless with a penchant for personally slaughtering and executing  victims.

"Momogu Bama has been a most wanted terrorist with a N25m bounty already placed on his head."

Olukolade, who  added that  the JTF had intensified aerial patrol to secure  communities  in Borno and Yobe states, said   that  17  insurgents were  killed and  24 arrested during the Bama  encounter.

"Others that died in the operation included Momogu's father, Alhaji  Flatari, who is also one of the spiritual guiding lights of the outlawed terrorists group.  Seventeen  other terrorists also lost their lives in the encounter  while 24 were arrested.''

He said  the JTF had intensified aerial patrol to secure communities in  the two states.

"The troops are continuing the pursuit of the terrorists while intensifying aggressive aerial and land patrols to ensure better security cover for the communities especially in the two states," he  said in the  statement.

Meanwhile, eight women may have been arrested in Maiduguri   by  the JTF operatives for using their veils to  conceal  guns for  insurgents.

A JTF source, who made this known  did not  say  exactly when the  women were arrested and the number of guns seized from them.

He  stated that the operatives were stunned when they stopped the women and found out that what they were "transporting" with their veils were guns.

He said, "The troops could not believe what they saw. A soldier just suspected the women and decided to stop them but when they were asked to unwrap what they were transporting, they hesitated, thereby making some of the soldiers to forcefully remove the veils. They saw  a number of guns neatly concealed with the veils and the  women were promptly arrested."

Olukolade  said that the JTF  in the North-East had intensified patrols in the north of Borno where 44 people  were killed by Boko Haram members  during an attack on  a mosque   on Sunday.

He  added that the JTF was combining aerial and ground patrols  to ensure effective protection of the communities in the area.

The DHQ spokesman said, "There is a regular and more aggressive patrol in the area; the patrols have been increased with the additional troops that are on the ground.

"It is not possible to station troops in all the villages in the area because they  are very far from each other. The solution is to step up patrols; we also have air patrol activities."

Also on Wednesday, the President of the Senate, David Mark; the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Jama'atu Nasril Islam  joined in the condemnation of the killing of 44  worshippers in  a mosque in Konduga.

Mark, in  a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul Mumeh,  called on the  security  agencies  to begin a review  of  their  strategies  against terrorism in the country.

He described the  incident as  inhuman and barbaric, saying that "nothing can be so cruel and callous than this crime against humanity."

He    lamented  that the renewed hostilities were coming   at a time  people were heaving a sigh of relief .

The Senate President  said, "The continued violence, killing of innocent and unarmed people and destruction of property by the insurgents  cannot be justified or contribute towards achieving whatever their objectives may be.

"There is a need for the perpetrators and their financers to make a U-turn and embrace peace. It is only a mad man that throws stone into the market place or village square  without thinking about the consequences . The Federal Government has opened  windows for peace and dialogue. These people should take advantage of  them  and end this violence.''

Also, CAN, through its President, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor,  expressed dismay over the  Konduga massacre , describing  it as callous.

He challenged Islamic  clerics  to "muster the needed courage to expose those who are bent on bastadising the good face of Islam."

According to him, Islamic leaders should not relent in their efforts "to combat the nefarious activities of the  militant sect  since  they adopt new tactics every day."

The CAN President, in a statement   on Wednesday by his Special Assistant (Media), Mr. Kenny Ashaka, said the Sunday  massacre was not only condemnable   but a  cowardly act   against   people fulfilling their spiritual obligation .

He said, "Nobody should be killed in the first place, much less  of being murdered  at a place of worship. Whatever people may have learnt that make them behave in such manner should be condemned by all Nigerians. As a Christian body, CAN will continue to condemn these heinous acts of the enemies of unity and agents of death.

"Those betraying their fellow Muslims by working underground with enemies of the nation should also be fished out and dealt with in accordance with the laws of the land."

In  its own statement, the JNI which is  led by the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar lll, called for investigation into the killings. It  noted that despite the emergency rule in    Yobe, Borno and Adamawa states,  killings by  insurgents had continued unabated.

It specifically wondered how the killings were carried  out considering the     heavy presence of  military men in an area  where over 40 uslims lost their lives while worshipping.

In the   statement   by its  Secretary-General, Dr. Khalid Aliyu, the JNI said it  received "with consternation and daze,  the senseless killings that occurred at police and military formations in Bama, Malam Fatori, Borno State, which was climaxed with another  senseless killings of innocent worshippers during early dawn prayers at a mosque in Konduga   some kilometres  away from Maiduguri, Borno State."
