ASUU May Call Off Strike Next Week

There are indications that the on-going strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Nigerian Universities might be called off next Thursday.

Governor of Benue State, Mr Gabriel Suswam who dropped this hint Friday said ASUU and the Federal Government had reached agreements on all the contentious issues that led to the industrial action except two.

Suswam who was appointed as Chairman of the Needs Assessment Implementation Committee of the Federal Government said after next Thursday's deliberations between his Committee and the various agencies of government funding tertiary education, all the contentious issues would likely be resolved.

Speaking to news men in Abuja after attending a meeting between the Federal Government's delegation and ASUU, Suswam said that agreements had been reached by both parties on all issues except two.

Said he: "We reached agreements on all issues except two. These two issues are those of earned allowances of lecturers and intervention for the federal universities. These are the only issues that are still outstanding."

The Benue Governor further said he believed that by next week after his Committee would have arrived at an agreement on all the issues, ASUU would call off the strike.

He continued: "The SGF would meet with the leadership of ASUU on the issue of earned allowances by next Monday.

Then my committee which is dealing with the issue of the needs assessment of the universities would meet again next Thursday and take another look at all the infrastructural deficits which the federal universities are facing.

If you go to our universities, you would agree that they are facing infrastructural deficits and that is why my committee would meet with all the funding agencies next Thursday for the purpose of prioritizing all the projects that need to be executed. We are going to invite all the agencies that are involved in the funding of the universities including the Central Bank of Nigeria."

Suswam further stated that the issues on agreements have been reached include: those of retirement age for university lecturers- which has now been increased from 65 to 70 years; the constitution of the governing councils of the universities which has already been done by the Government; the setting up of a pension administrator and the issue of persuading companies operating in the country to set up research centers in the universities.

Said he: "As far as I am concerned, if the issues concerning intervention and earned allowances are resolved next week, then the strike could be called off"

Among those who attended the meeting were Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator Anyim Pius Anyim, Minister of Labour, Hon. Emeka Wogu, Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayatu Rufai and President of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Dr Nasir Fagge.

Trailer Crushes Taxi In Ibadan, Kills 3

A trailer yesterday crushed a taxi in Ibadan, killing the driver and two passengers.

The vehicle, which was carrying granite, was reportedly coming from the Ojoo end of the Ibadan-Lagos Expressway when it skidded off the road due to a brake failure near the Iwo Road interchange axis of the expressway.

An eyewitness, who preferred anonymity, told our reporter that the accident occurred about 1pm. He said the driver, on discovering the brake has failed, tried to use a structure beside the road to stop the vehicle, but he ran into the taxi, whose driver was dropping passenger.

According to the source, the trailer crushed the taxi, killing the driver and two passengers, dragging the cab until it hit a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) parked by the road. The SUV was slightly damaged as it was hit from behind. It tore the taxi into two.

The Nation learnt that on discovering the consequence of his action, the driver and his two assistants bolted to avoid being lynched by sympathisers.

Confirming the accident, Oyo State police spokesperson Mrs. Olabisi Ilobanafor said three people died.She said policemen visited the scene and towed the taxi and the SUV to a nearby station for further investigation.

According to her, the victims have been taken to the mortuary.Mrs. Ilobanafor said the trailer driver has been arrested.

Police Rescue Eight-month-old Baby Sold By Grandmother

Men of the Plateau State Police Command have rescued an eight-month old baby girl, who was allegedly sold by her grandmother in Jos, Plateau State.

Our correspondent learnt that the baby was sold in Jos few weeks ago, but was rescued in Onitsha, Anambra on Wednesday.She was rescued by men of the 'A' Division of the state police after a complaint by the mother and a tip-off by some members of the public.

Umoru Musa Stabbed by Kunle Oyebanji

The police at Idimu Police Division have arrested and charged a 24-year old man, Kunle Oyebanji, before Ejigbo Magistrates' Court, in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, for allegedly stabbing a retailer, Umoru Musa, over N10 cigarette.
Oyebanji was charged with assault and refusing to pay for a stick of cigarette to Musa who sells provisions at 1, Pipeline Street, Idimu, Lagos.

Narrating what happened, Musa said Oyebanji usually buys provisions from him on credit. But after some months, Musa said he stopped selling to him when he refused to pay his debts and threatened him whenever he asked for his money.

On the fateful day, Musa said the suspect came to his kiosk and demanded for a stick cigarette but he refused to sell to him. But instead of leaving, Musa alleged that Oyebanji forcefully picked the cigarette and smoked at the kiosk.

Musa alleged that Oyebanji refused to pay for the cigarette when he demanded for his money. Instead, Oyebanji became angry and questioned Musa for asking him for the money.

In annoyance it was alleged that Oyebanji brought out a knife from his pocket and stabbed Musa several times.

When Musa began to bleed and slump, Oyebani allegedly fled from the scene of the incident.

The matter was reported at Idimu Police Division, while Musa was rushed to a nearby hospital in the area.

Oyebanji was later arrested and charged to court.

When he was arraigned in court, he pleaded not guilty.

Oyebanji admitted that he went to Musa's kiosk to buy cigarette on credit but he promised to pay him.

He said the problem began when Musa insisted that he must pay him before leaving the kiosk .

Oyebanji said he explained to him that he had no money on him but Musa insisted on collecting his money.

The suspect said the argument resulted in exchange of words and a fight between them.

The presiding magistrate, Mr P. E. Nwaka, granted Oyebanji bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till 14 August.

A boy has been born in India with two heads and one body.

CBS reports that the infant is a conjoined dicephalic parapagus twin,
a rare condition which more commonly affects girls, often causing them
to be stillborn.

The little boy reportedly has two nervous systems but only one rib
cage and shoulder girdle. His two backbones are fused at the pelvis,
and doctors say he needs further tests to see if he has other
conjoined organs.

He is being cared for at the J K Lone Hospital in Jaipur City. The
Daily Mail reports his medical team there are confident he will
survive despite the seriousness of his condition.

In 2011, a Brazillian woman gave birth to conjoined twins – the second
such birth in Brazil that year. Her doctors did not plan to separate
the babies. In February 2004, a baby was born in the Dominican
republic with two heads. The BBC reported at the time that the little
girl – Rebeca Martinez – initially came through an 11-hour operation
to remove the live head of her partially-formed twin, but later died
from surgery-related complications.

conjoined children who have survived into young adulthood – they
shared their story on the TLC reality TV series 'Abby & Brittany', and
showed how they live independent and fulfilled lives despite sharing a

Tired of dealing with the unbearable summer heat, a 27-year-old driver from Eibenstock, Germany, had the not-so-brilliant idea to turn his BMW convertible into a mobile pool, by completely sealing the passenger cabin and filling it with water.

German police say a motorcycle cop couldn't believe his eyes when he saw four men, including the driver, splashing about in the open-top BMW as they passed him Sunday afternoon near Blauenthal, about 155 miles (250 kilometers) south of Berlin.

Chemnitz police spokesman Frank Fischer says the men pulled over and jumped into a nearby river as soon as they saw the officer, but one later returned to claim his clothes.

Fischer said Thursday that police were still investigating which of the men drove and whether he was drunk. He said the vehicle itself "probably didn't have a road permit."

Cesc Fabregas has told friends in English football that he wants to quit Barcelona for Manchester United.

The Spanish midfielder is the subject of a fierce battle between United and Barcelona, with the Barclays Premier League champions having had a bid in excess of £30million turned down.

United manager David Moyes on Thursday told a press conference in Japan that the club's pursuit of the former Arsenal star was 'ongoing' and it is understood that another bid is imminent.

But the fact that Fabregas has told friends in England that he wants out of the Nou Camp could finally give United the impetus they need.

Fabregas also believes he can win an English title with United to go with the one he won in Spain's La Liga last season. The 26-year-old won only an FA Cup and Community Shield during his years with Arsenal.

Barcelona's stance remains obdurate and they continue to tell United their midfielder is not for sale.

If Fabregas decides to ask for a transfer, however, that may change.

United are due to play their fourth tour match here on Friday, facing up to Cerezo Osaka at 11am English time.

Van Persie is expected to play some part after recovering from a tight thigh while Moyes also revealed that captain Nemanja Vidic — who has been suffering from sciatica — has started to play competitive football back home in England.

Moyes said: 'There was a practice match at Carrington the other day. 

'Vidic, Nani and Antonio Valencia all had playing time in that. Wayne Rooney is also running and at the level we thought he'd be at. He'll step that up this week.

'Substituting Robin was a precaution the other night. I expect he and Danny Welbeck to both play the next match.

'Michael Carrick had a tight groin and is doing better but probably won't feature. He should resume training over the weekend.'

Brendan Rodgers has warned Luis Suarez he will be making a big mistake if he turns his back on Liverpool for Arsenal this summer.

Little has changed from Liverpool's point of view with regards to Suarez: they do not want to sell him, have not received a written transfer request from him and no club have come close to matching their valuation of the Uruguay striker.

Privately, though, there is recognition that his future at the club is in the balance. Arsenal have aggressively pursued the 26-year-old, while Real Madrid remain major players, despite their interest in Tottenham's Gareth Bale.

If the attraction of Madrid is understandable, Rodgers is puzzled as to what Suarez sees on offer for him at Arsenal that is better than at Anfield and has told him to give deep consideration to his next move.

Liverpool manager Rodgers said: 'I know what we are trying to build, so why would you swap Liverpool to go to Arsenal? I am not sure that it adds up to be honest. Arsenal have a wonderful history in their own right but Liverpool are one of the biggest clubs in the world.

'We are not in the Champions League and haven't been for a while and we have to step up to the challenge now.'

Rodgers, who wants resolution to this saga 'sooner rather than later', is in no mood to give up the fight and has the full support of Liverpool's owners, Fenway Sports Group, in how he deals with it.

Liverpool are under no pressure to sell — Suarez has three years left on his contract — and Rodgers has told his No 7 that life might not be as good for him as it is on Merseyside, where he plays in a team that is set up around him.

When asked if he felt Suarez would be making an error to leave, Rodgers replied: 'One hundred per cent. To be given a team built around you . . . I made some big calls to make it work to suit his strengths.

'It is no coincidence he had a great season apart from the end bit. We would love to have him to continue the next phase. It is difficult for Luis, I understand that. If a team wants you, it can be difficult. But I am not sure many teams will have done what we have done in the last couple of games (playing in front of massive crowds in Indonesia and Australia). I am sure Luis will have seen the sheer size and status of the club, so we'll just see how it goes. It is not something we want to run on too long.'

Liverpool held talks with Suarez while they were in Melbourne and will continue to do so in Bangkok, where they arrived on Thursday for the final leg of their tour. Suarez has certainly not been given permission to leave the group and talk to any interested clubs.

Rodgers conceded, however, that an official request to leave from Suarez, which would mean him suffering financially, would change the picture.'He is under contract but I haven't even thought about him putting a request in writing,' Rodgers said.

'It's like anything: unless a player tells you he really wants to go, only then do you have to look at it.

'But it is a situation we are in control of because he has three years left on his contract. Unless something changes or there is an offer which is heavily increased, he is still very much a Liverpool player.

'The owners have been brilliant throughout this process. The board and club has stayed very strong, it is very simple. We don't want to sell one of our best players.'

Defender Glen Johnson, one of Suarez's main friends in the squad, backed up the view of his manager and stressed that the decision to leave Liverpool is not one that a player should take lightly.'He loves his football and he always wants to play,' said the England right back. 'No matter what team you play for, it is always important to keep your best players. The members of staff, the players — we are all the same. We want to keep him here.

'We are building under Brendan. With the owners that we have got now, you can see the foundations are there and everything is going the right way. If we can keep the players that we have got here, then everything looks promising.'

Arsenal are hoping to push a deal through as quickly as possible, capitalising on the fact that, as it stands, they are the only club in the running for  Suarez. But the complexity of the player's £40million clause is delaying their progress.

Arsenal remain in talks with Liverpool after seeing their second offer for Suarez, worth £40million plus £1, rejected.

Sportsmail understands that Suarez reiterated his desire to speak to Arsenal during talks with Rodgers. The Gunners are reluctant to significantly increase their offer, but remain determined to land their No 1 summer target.

Punch reports that the deceased who was the Superintendent Evangelist of Celestial Church of God, Mile 12, died during a confrontation with Oladele over the latter’s decision to scoop some sand in front of his church.

The 19-year-old daughter of the deceased, Oluwaseun, said she witnessed the incident on July 19, 2013.

 

She said, “The woman (Oladele) came to pack sand in front of the church and another cleric, Assistant Superintendent Evangelist Samuel Oteghene, told her not to pack the sand. When my father arrived at the scene, Oteghene went inside.

Strike: FG, ASUU To Meet Today

The Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, will meet today on the ongoing strike embarked upon by university lecturers over the non- implementation of the 2009 FG/ASUU agreement.

This came against the backdrop of Minister of Labour and Productivity, Chief Emeka Wogu’s denial of a newspaper report that the Federal Government agreement with ASUU could not work.The minister said he never made such a statement and that he only appealed to the union to return to the classrooms while negotiations continued.

D'Banj, Olamide to rock Abeokuta on Saturday

Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, will on Saturday night host a big fish in the Nigerian entertainment sea as hip hop bull, D'Banj, will perform there.

He is headlining the Star Music Trek, whose train will berth at the Abeokuta Sports Club. While it is the first time that D'Banj will be appearing on stage of the nationwide concert, another reigning act, Olamide, will also be in action at the show.
