Woman Allegedly Beats 11yr Old Maid To Death In Lagos

Crime alerts reports that a middle aged woman simply identified as madam Agnes is currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigations Department, SCID Panti, for allegedly beating an 11-year-old child that was staying with her to death.

The deceased identified as Angelina, was reportedly taken from her parents in far away Ogoja, Cross River state by Agnes, with a promise to send her to school, when she was barely four years old. Angelina, grew up calling her guardian mother, apparently unaware she was not her biological mother.

But things as gathered, fell apart for late Angelina after she turned 6, as she was reportedly made to carry out overwhelming house chores. Initial rebuff of such attitude from madam Rose who crime Alert learnt is related to Angelina's mother, by neighbour was reportedly greeted with an outburst.

The dehumanising treatment on Angelina reached its peak last Friday, as she was reportedly beaten to death by her madam, for failure to carry out chores as instructed.

Investigation by Crime Alert revealed that on that fateful day, at about 5pm, Madam Agnes returned home screaming at the little girl whom neighbours said was not feeling too well. Madam Agnes reportAedly dragged Angelina into her apartment located on 75 Barracks lllane, Ajegunle and started beating her. The helpless girl was said to have shouted for help. But none was forth coming. Then, all of a sudden she seized crying.

Neighbours later became apprehensive after they sighted madam Agnes rush out of her room to a medicine store opposite the building. She reportedly came back with a nurse who went inside with her and rushed out again to get something.

At this point, a neighbour told Crime Alert during a visit at the building yesterday that " we suspected all was not well. When the nurse came out , we asked what the problem was and she told us that Angelina had fainted. We all rushed inside, only to behold Angelina's lifeless body on the ground.

On further observation, we discovered a pestle by the side with blood stain and we concluded she could have used it on Angelina".

Another neighbour who also spoke on condition of anonymity said, " We are not surprised at Angelina's demise because madam Agnes had always threatened. At the slightest provocation, she would beat her with any object at her disposal. At times she would smash bottle on her head and at other times, she would use a stool on her. At a point we got angry but there was nothing we could do to alert Angelina's biological parents".

Asked why none of them bothered to report the abuse on Angelina to the Police, another neighbour replied, " Police? You want madam Agnes to fight you? Even if you attempt to rescue Angelina from her grip whenever she was being beaten, Agnes would fight you and ask if you were her relative.

At a point, she resorted to locking the doors whenever she wanted to beat the girl, in order to prevent anyone from coming to her rescue".

Everyone who spoke with Crime Alert described the late Angelina as a dutiful girl who never complained while carrying out any of the house chores. At times she reportedly missed schools in order to finish the chores before the arrival of her guardian. Most times neighbours said she would be made to finish the chores before taking her first meal either at noon or evening.

"Saturdays were the most hectic for the little girl as she would be made to wash her guardians clothes and those of her two grown children".

Fake Naira Notes In ATM’s: CBN Blames Commercial Banks

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has blamed operational inefficiency on the part of some commercial banks for the alleged fake naira notes dispensed by some automated teller machines (ATMs) in the country, stressing that some people were not doing what they ought to be doing.

CBN governor Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi, who briefed journalists on the outcome of deliberations at the end of the two-day Monetary Policy Meeting, yesterday in Abuja, stated that banks are supposed to process currency before they go to the ATM during which fake notes ought to have been identified and taken out.

According to him, if customers find fake notes in the ATMs it means that somebody in the commercial bank did not do what he/she was supposed to do by just putting in notes without ensuring their due processing.

"It is really an operational issue. Banks are supposed to process currency before putting them in the ATMs and their machines should identify fake notes. So if you find fake notes in an ATM somebody in the bank did not do what he/she should do."

He also said that the problem could also arise from ATMs that receive and dispense cash which also suggests that many of the sensors are not working.

He however assured that the deputy governor, operations, is working with the banks to make sure that they are addressed.

The CBN also introduced a new component to its monetary policy instruments with the increase to 50 per cent of the cash reserve ratio (CRR) on public sector deposits in banks in a bid to curb banks' 'perverse' behaviour of lending only to the government at the expense of the private sector.

This means that banks must henceforth keep as reserves 50 per cent of all deposits collected from the federal, state and local governments and all ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) of government.

Other decisions taken by the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) included retaining the monetary policy rate (MPR), its lending benchmark for deposit money banks (DMBs), at 12 per cent and the symmetric corridor of +/-200 basis points around the midpoint.

With the development, the DMBs handling government deposits would be retaining as reserves an estimated N650 billion of their deposits from public sector, from an estimated N1.3 trillion currently in their balance sheets, thus reducing the amount of government deposits that can be used for lending.

Sanusi, who is chairman of the MPC, said the new monetary measures were being undertaken to contain the increasing liquidity in the banks and the attendant negative implications for naira exchange stability, in order to achieve overall macroeconomic stability in the months ahead.

Sanusi explained that the committee voted in favour of increasing the CRR for public sector deposits to 50 per cent; that measure was taken to effectively manage the liquidity surfeit in the banking system, the need to create appropriate monetary mechanisms to mitigate the likely negative impact of fiscal entrenchment that would characterise the election years and ensuring stable exchange rate for the naira in the face of worrisome developments in the global financial environment.

According to him, the committee observed the build-up in excess liquidity in the banking system, and expressed concern over the rising cost of liquidity management as well as the sluggish growth in private sector credit, which was traced to DMBs' appetite for government securities.

"This situation is made more serious by the perverse incentive structure under which banks source huge amounts of public sector deposits and lend same to the government through securities and the CBN via OMO bills at high rates of interest."

Sanusi said: "We introduced it for a number of reasons; first of all you have got liquidity surfeit in the banking industry. As I speak, we have about N1.3trillion sitting in banks belonging to government agencies. Now the funds are basically there at zero per cent interest and the banks are lending about N2trillion to the government and charging 13, 14 per cent. Now that is a very good business model, is it not? Give me your money for free and I will lend it to you at 14 per cent. Why would I go and lend to anyone else?

"If you want to discourage such perverse behaviour, what you need to do is to basically take away some of that money and therefore the reserve requirement is supposed to make sure that that excess liquidity in the banks' balance sheets is taken away. We have about six or seven banks that really account for the bulk of this money; we have done the numbers and we are not going to put them into distress.

"Secondly, this is just the beginning. If there continues to be spending and we are concerned about liquidity conditions, we foresee in the future continued increase in the CRR across the board as we continue to maintain the liquidity conditions. Election years everywhere in the world are difficult years, not just in Nigeria. In America, France, in every election year, politicians spend money and spending money means pressure on exchange rate, pressure on reserves, pressure on inflation.

"The next 12 months will be difficult, we will have to respond at every stage and make sure that no matter what happens, we do not have stability threatened. This is a first step in addressing one major chunk. We have not done it across the board, we have done it across public sector deposits and if the government decides that public sector deposits come back to the CBN, then the CRR is zero, but if it is out there, then CRR is 50 per cent," Sanusi added.

The committee also expressed strong concerns about the risks posed to government revenues from oil theft, less than expected production, new discoveries of shale oil, the fast-increasing number of African oil exporters, and the resultant dwindling market for Nigerian crude.

Sanusi noted that the inevitable fall in global oil prices as well as capital flow reversal may impact the current global (dollar) carry trade, for which Nigeria has been a major beneficiary.

The committee articulated the monetary policy risks of dwindling fiscal revenues to include: the crowding-out effect of government borrowing, depletion of excess crude savings and pressure on the exchange rate. Available data indicates that capital expenditure is the first casualty of dwindling government revenues as available resources were being channelled into funding non-discretionary recurrent expenditure.

Housewife Dies During Sex With Lover In Hotel

The price of adultery is always tragic if one considers what happened at the weekend in Lagos between a young man and a married woman in a hotel room. The man took the housewife identified as Glory Abbey to a popular hotel where she died during sex romp between the lovers.

The yet to be identified man quietly abandoned her corpse in the room they lodged and fled without informing the hotel's management about what happened. The incident happened at Kings of Queens Hotel located at 11, Otunba Oladokun Street, Lanre Bus Stop, Igando, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria. What could have caused her death was not yet known because the autopsy report is not yet out.

According to the hotel's manager identified as Saliu, the woman came to the hotel with the young man, booked a room and went in."After staying for several hours in the room the man came out and told the security men that he wanted to buy food outside and he did not return to the hotel," he said. They later discovered the woman lying dead on the bed in the room.Saliu said he did not see any physical injury she sustained and could not explain what really  caused her death.

The owner of the hotel, Otunba Richard Oladokun, who also confirmed the incident, expressed shock over what happened. He said he was informed about what happened on phone by his manager and he went to the police station at Igando and reported the matter. He said he came with the police to the hotel and found the woman lying dead on the bed and the police took away her corpse to the mortuary.

Oladokun said what surprised him most was that the young man who brought the woman to the hotel initially picked his calls and promised to come back but did not. Rather, he later switched off his phone and no one has been able to contact him again since the incident happened.Nobody has been able to contact the woman's husband or relatives as there is no address to trace them at the time of this report.

Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, described Glory's death as sudden and  unnatural. She said her body has been deposited at the mortuary for autopsy, while the police have since commenced investigation into the matter.

A  similar incident happened sometime ago when a married woman who had four kids was found dead after she went to a hotel in Mushin with her lover who is also married and has kids.

During the sex romp, the woman collapsed and died. After she died, her lover attempted to escape but he was caught and handed over to the police. The police later charged him with murder at Ebute Meta Magistrate's Court Lagos.

Four Family Members Burnt To Death In Osun State

A two-month old baby and her parents lost their lives in a midnight inferno that razed their residence in Kajola community, Osun State, in the early hours of Wednesday.
A resident, who pleaded anonymity, said the couple and their baby were consumed by the fire without anyone noticing in the neighbourhood.

It could not be ascertained whether the tragedy occurred before a light rain on Wednesday or after.

Our correspondent, however, noted that the incident had thrown the community into grief.

One of the children of the deceased, who went for a vigil, wept uncontrollably when she returned home in the morning to meet the charred bodies of her parents and sibling.

All the household gadgets of the family were burnt in the inferno suspected to be caused by a power surge.

The state Deputy Governor, Mrs Titi Laoye-Tomori, who visited the scene, expressed shock.

Laoye-Tomori, who gave an undisclosed amount of money to the family, said, "The government will henceforth be responsible for the upkeep of the surviving children."

Officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps took the corpses of the victims to the mortuary.

The Public Relations Officer, Ife-Ile PHCN Business District, Mr Akin Otaraki, said the fire outbreak could not have been cause by a power surge because the area had been disconnected from power supply by Power Holding Company of Nigeria.

"The community and some others had been in darkness since Saturday, July 20, 2013 due to a yet-to-be identified fault. The fact on the ground is that the inferno could not have been caused by a power surge because there has not been power supply to the affected communities, including Kajola," Otaraki said.

Lagos State Government Dumps 70 Beggars, Others In Onitsha

No fewer than 70 beggars and the homeless were on Wednesday dumped at the Upper Iweka Bridge, Onitsha, Anambra State.

Agents of the Lagos State Government reportedly brought the destitute to Onitsha.

The destitute told journalists that they were dumped about 3am at Upper Iweka after being detained in Ikorodu, Lagos, for over six months for alleged wandering and other minor offences by the Lagos State Kick Against Indiscipline officials.

The destitute said they were brought to Onitsha in four buses, escorted by riot policemen.

One of them, Mr. Osondu Mbuto, from Ohaozara in Ebonyi State and a petty trader in Lagos, said he was arrested by the Lagos State Government officials while going to his shop on December 18, 2012.

Mbuto added that the Lagos State Government officials were in company with some policemen.

The Chairman of Nigeria Red Cross Society in the South-East, Dr. Peter Katchy, described the action of the Lagos State officials as condemnable.

He said, "It's very deplorable; it's very disheartening that a state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria will bundle people, who are not even indigenes of Anambra State, and dump them under the flyover at Upper Iweka in Onitsha.

"Many of the people, we have interviewed are not indigenes of Anambra State. Some of them are from Ebonyi State; some are from Imo State among other states.

"It is an insult to Anambra State. We shall draw the attention of the governor of Anambra State to ask the reason for such an invasion of his territory.

"We will find out why Lagos State should invade Anambra State territory; and why Lagos State should dump people here and leave them helpless.

"We are here on humanitarian purposes and in response to an emergency. From what we discovered here, this is a human emergency and a human callousness."

Katchy, however, promised that the society would move the destitute to the Anambra State Social Welfare Centre in Onitsha South Local Government for rehabilitation.

The Lagos State Government had dumped another set of beggars at Upper Iweka late last year.

Linda Ikeji Goes Head To Head With Pastor Chris

Written by Ese Grage

Popular Lagos blogger, Linda Ikeji who describes herself as a "self-made millionaire" has been allegedly accused by Pastor Chris Kwakpovwe, author of Our Daily Manna devotional and senior pastor of Our Daily Manna Mountain Prayer Ministry, of blackmail.

Ardent followers of his daily devotional will recall that on Page 56 of the 22nd-July edition of his devotional, the pastor wrote that one Linda, a blogger and Facebook activist has been sending him several text messages, asking for an undisclosed amount of money else she would work with journalists all over the world to destroy his ministry.

Well, at first, it was easy to believe that the man of God may not have been referring to Linda Ikeji; after all, he did not actually print her full name. But with the current rebuttal on her blog just a day after her name was mentioned in the devotional, it now appears there may be some truth in the matter.

At the footnote of the page of the devotional in question, which usually contains prayer points, Pastor Chris wrote "… I received lots of text messages from one Linda a blogger/Facebook specialist, asking me to drop a certain amount of money otherwise they [sic] will work with different journalists around the world against this vision."

The prayer point then goes thus: "scatter any plan to publish any lie against this ministry! Three people have dropped dead because of this in their camp."

In Linda's blog post she titled Dear LIB readers; A letter from me, Linda, to you, she took out time to explain how she practically went from having nothing to becoming a millionaire all on her own accord, and then goes on to clarify some of the "rumours" peddled against her in recent times.

"Now to the point of my letter. Just to clarify some things you probably have read about me: I'm not a blackmailer, never blackmailed anyone in my life, never will! I don't have the liver to do such, plus I was raised better than that. Don't know how anyone can stoop that low."

Why did Linda feel the need to address this issue, considering that this is not the first time someone has made accusations against her? Could it be fear, respect for the man of God, or just a way of garnering more following on her blog — that post has received over 1,300 comments — more comments than she has received in a while.

With a prayer point like that, however, who can blame Linda for coming out to publicly declare her innocence even if no full name was mentioned. Through her blog, she has sent a message to Pastor Chris and many other people who may have been thinking that the Linda in Our Daily Manna is Linda Ikeji, owner of lindaikeji.blogspot.com.

SHOCKING: Human Skull Serving As Soap Dish Found In House Of Suspect

The case started with a search for a suspect who was threatening the life of his victim, saying that his life had been paid for, and the victim would therefore need to pay a ransom to redeem his life. But the police were astounded when, in their bid to arrest the suspect, they found the skull of a human being serving as a soap dish in his house.

The bizarre but true story occurred in Ifon, in Ose Local Government area of Ondo State recently.

Crime reports learnt that the suspect, Aigbohai Jimoh (25) in connivance with his partner in crime, Ikujeniya Yinka (26), came up with an ingenuity that could be fetching him cool cash with little stress. He reportedly sent a text message to one Samuel Afolayemi on June 21, demanding a sum of N400,000.

His reason, someone had paid N1million for Afolayemi to be eliminated but the would-be victim's response on phone made him to have a second thought because he sounded like a responsible person. Afolayemi was said to have reported the case to the Anti-Robbery Squad in Ondo State Police Command, where the Officer-in-Charge, Akin Adejobi, a Superintendent of Police, asked him to play along, while a team of operatives was detailed to handle the case and arrest the suspects.

In the course of investigation, the SARS team discovered that a similar message had been sent to one David Arijoba around March this year, and a sum of N800,000 was collected from him. The operatives were told that the man decided to pay when he noticed that the sender knew his movements.

The man had told the police that anytime he came to Ifon from his base in Port Harcourt, he would receive text messages telling him that he was being monitored. Not only that, a threat letter was also dropped in his house to show the seriousness of his stalkers. He had to look for the money by all means to save his life.

Furthermore, when Jimoh's house was searched by the police, a human skull containing black soap was found and on interrogation, the suspect said that he was using the soap in the skull to bath daily. He further stated that the charm was done for him by an herbalist for wealth purposes. Jimoh reportedly had a separate room for the skull which was accessible to him alone, before the police burst the place.

Immediately the herbalist learnt of the discovery and Jimoh's arrest, he was said to have abandoned his house and had been on the run since.

OMG!!! Mermaid Caught Inside Cartoon Of Fish; See Photo

Mr Akindele House, Isale Asaka in the Foko area ofIbadan, an erstwhile sleepy and serene community in the capital city of Oyo State, came alive on Tuesday and it became a Mecca of sort, when the news of a miniature mermaid (omo Yemoja) filtered through the city.

It took a while before the Nigerian Tribune crew got access to the house, a storey building, when it finally did, the head of the family, Alhaji Raufu A. Salau, said he was sleeping upstairs when he heard a lot of unusual noise which forced him to come downstairs. According to him:

"Ramota, his granddaughter, sells fried and roasted fish in the house and, as usual, purchased a carton of frozen fish that morning. She was in the process of cleaning the fish and separating those to be roasted from the ones to be fried when she was said to have screamed out loud and called on neighbours to come to her aid."

Salau, a retired civil servant, said he heard people asking after him but rather than come upstairs to see him, the lady ran to meet her Shehu, an Islamic cleric, who followed her home and offered some prayers in the Islamic way before the neighbours, who had begun to converge on the scene, could take the pictures of the strange "fish." The first person who took the picture of the strange fish was said to have had his phone shattered mysteriously.

Alhaja Alirat, a member of the community, told the Nigerian Tribune that she did not see the mermaid but the lady who claimed to have seen it, but declined to speak with the press, told her that the mermaid, though very small in size initially, grew bigger and was fish from waist downward and human being from waist upwards, with mouth, nose, eyes and long hair, which it was swinging to cover its eyes when the mammoth crowd thronged to the scene to look at it.

She also said it was alleged that the mermaid spoke, begging Ramota, the fish seller, not to expose it but that Ramota shouted out of fear.

Meanwhile, one Miss Osungbemi, an Osun worshipper, claimed that the mermaid was on a mission to uplift Ramota financially.

Rather than shout, she said Ramota ought to have looked for a big basin filled with water and throw the mermaid inside, adding that she should have then called on Osun worshippers who would call the mermaid by its cognomen and tutor the lady on how to appease it.

She said Ramota would have become a consultant, diagnosing and treating people with aid of the mermaid, who would be telling her what to do, even as she claimed that someone in the house where the mermaid was found must have worshipped Osun at a point in his or her life.

Members of the crowd, who did not give their names, confirmed that Ramota's mother that had worshipped Osun before and that before the occurrence, she had received messages to visit the Osun Osogbo grove to worship Osun, but that she had been complaining that there was no time.

It was overheard that the mermaid had been taken to the house of the Aare Musulumi of Yorubaland, Alhaji AbdulAzeez Arisekola-Alao, in Ibadan.

Strange Fish With Human Parts Causes Stir In Ibadan [Photo]

Hundreds of residents of Ibadan, Tuesday, rushed out to catch a glimpse of a strange fish which was said to have human parts at Asaka compound area of the city.

The incident happened at Ile Akindele when a fish seller noticed the strange creature after removing the wrap of a frozen fish.

Ramota, who was said to be the fish seller reportedly, raised alarm to attract others to the strange sight.
She said, "I went to where we usually buy fish at Kola Eleja, Oke Ado, Ibadan. After I finished, I boarded Okada to my place to prepare the fish for sale.

Before getting the fish out of the ice-pack, we needed to use knife to remove them and use water to de-freeze. I was shocked to see the frozen fish developed into a living being in the water, the description of which showed half human and half fish. I quickly called my father and some Alfas to see the strange fish".

The father of the woman, a retired civil servant, Pa Rauf Salawu who corroborated the story said he had never seen such a thing before.

He narrated his own side of the story saying, "it was around 11am, when I started hearing the voice of my daughter while I was resting on my bed. She was shouting and screaming to the extent that people in the compound were attracted.

Then, I decided to check what was the problem. I took along my Quran and on getting there, my daughter had gone to call another  Muslim leader in the neighbourhood.

I saw the strange fish inside water in the bucket . It was strange, how can a fish bought in the cold room develop into human. That I cannot fully explain."

Due to the crowd, police men from Mapo police station were there to control the crowd.

The fish seller was then taken into the custody of the police. Several calls made to the police were not picked.
