Poor women have been exploited at their most vulnerable time by a hospital that charged them $5 every time they screamed during child birth.

The shocking discovery was made by a U.S. group that campaigns against corruption, as it released its annual Global Corruption Barometer.

At the hospital in Zimbabwe, one of the poorest countries in the world, the fine was said to be for 'raising a false alarm', according to Transparency International.

Two Arraigned Over Possession Of Human Head

A 49-year-old man, Samson Adeneye, and a woman, Oyerinde Olawunmi, 48, have been arraigned before the Surulere Magistrate’s Court, Lagos, for allegedly being in possession of human head.
The two accused were said to be former members of St. Peter Cherubim and Seraphim band at Moses Adebisi Street, Ketu.

The head was said to have been recovered from the ceiling of the church and traced to the duo, who had allegedly been sending threat text messages to some pastors of the church.
The police said there were fingerprints evidence against the accused.

The charge sheet, read in part, “That you, Samson Jolu Adeneye, ‘m’, Oyerinde Olawunmi, ‘f’and others now at large on the 19th day of January, 2013, at about 1530hrs at St Peter Cherubim and Seraphim band at No. 8 Moses Adebisi Street, Alapere Street, Alapere Ketu, Lagos within the Lagos Magisterial district did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit: unlawful possession of human skull and thereby committed an offence contrary and punishable under section 409 criminal laws of Lagos State 2011”

However, only Adeneye was in court on Friday, as the magistrate, Mrs. A.O Adedayo, obliged that the second accused be arraigned on Monday.

The prosecution counsel, Mr. A.A Animashaun, moved the motion that the defendant be remanded in prison custody pending the advice from the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The allegation and application were read to the defendant, but his plea was not taken.
The defence counsel, A.D Abass, however objected to the application, insisting that Adeneye was not found with human head as the charge stated.

Abass said, “My, Lord, the prosecution is out to mislead this honourable court as no human head was found with the accused.”

Adedayo, however, said, “If you have any evidence, you should submit it before this court. And I am yet to see that.”

The magistrate said she would give the defence counsel time to properly file his application.
The accused was remanded, pending when the matter would be reopened on July 17.

Manchester United Make €30m Fabregas Bid

Manchester United have made a €30 million (£25.9m) opening offer forBarcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas.

Having seen Thiago elect to join up with former boss Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich rather than move to Old Trafford, United have turned their attentions to the former Arsenal man. After lodging the offer on Monday, United must now wait for Barcelona to make their stance regarding the midfielder known.

Fabregas often struggled to break in to the Barca line-up last season and was occasionally booed by his own supporters when he performed poorly. The Gunners have been keeping tabs on Fabregas - who left the Emirates Stadium for Camp Nou in 2011, throughout the summer – and have a €29m buy-back clause in place.

Arsene Wenger is keen to bolster his squad this summer and has been in contact with his former midfielder about his current situation in Catalunya.Despite United’s confidence that their £6.2m salary offer would be enough to tempt Thiago, the 22-year-old will complete a move to Bayern Munich this week.

Police Arrest 10 Suspected Kidnappers In Lagos

The Police Command in Lagos on Monday said it had arrested 10 persons who allegedly kidnapped a Nigerian and a Chinese after collecting N8.5 million ransom. The Police Commissioner in the state, Umar Manko, said this in Lagos while parading the suspects and exhibits recovered from them.

Mr. Manko said two of the suspects were arrested on July 3 for alleged kidnap of Kingsley Ifeanyi and Kauang Yingjun, senior employees of ZTE Nigeria Ltd, Ikoyi, Lagos.“After the arrest of the two suspects and their confession to the Special Ant-Robbery Squad (SARS), eight others were arrested. All the suspects confessed to have collected N8.5 million ransom.“One of the suspects, identified as Akaniyene, an employee of ZTE, who resides at the Boys’ Quarters, where the company is located, confessed to have given information that led to the kidnap of Yingjun.

He claimed he was given N700,000 from the ransom collected. During a search at the residence of the suspects, two locally made double-barrel pistols and 18 cartridges were recovered.“The hideout they used for keeping kidnapped victims at Epe has been identified and searched,’’ Mr. Manko said.
One of the suspects identified as Taiwo, 33, claimed he was a driver responsible for hiring vehicles for ZTE Company. He said that the gang decided to kidnap the victims due to alleged maltreatment meted to Nigerians in the company.“The way they were maltreating the black in the company was bad. They sacked an old man of about 70 years after working for about six years with them.

They did not pay him any money until we protested, then, they gave him N15, 000.“I discussed the issue with one of the suspects who told me that they have been thinking of what to do. We decided that we would kidnap the victims and beat them up.

One of the suspects suggested that we should kidnap to get money. We agreed on the money; we collected N8.5 million and my share was N1.5 million,’’ he said.(NAN)

ASUU Strike Latest: Lecturers Meeting With Lawmakers, Ministers Deadlocked

asuu

The meeting between striking university lecturers’ and federal legislators was deadlocked on Monday.

The meeting, held at the National Assembly Complex, failed to resolve the contending issues. The meeting was initially delayed reportedly due to the late arrival of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim.

The lecturers, members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, were said to have insisted on a 100 per cent implementation of the 2009 agreement with the federal government; while the lawmakers and government officials present requested partial implementation.

ASUU has been on strike for almost two weeks, paralyzing academic activities at all Nigeria’s public universities.

At the Monday meeting, ASUU insisted that the Federal Government should implement the agreements reached in 2009 before it would call off its strike.

Some of the issues in contention include: funding, university autonomy, academic freedom, earned academic allowance and registration of Universities Pension Management Company.

Others are: amendment of pension retirement age of academics at the professional cadre, federal assistance to state universities and transfer of Federal Government landed property to universities.
ASUU President, Dr Nasir Fagge, told the committee that only two out of the nine agreements had been met.

“We cannot renegotiate what was already agreed in 2009, so the best thing is, let government go and implement the aspects of the agreement as they have proposed to us themselves.

“Once that is done, I am confident that it will engender confidence among our members and our members nationwide will be able to review the situation at any moment and take appropriate decision.’’

Dr. Fagge expressed worry that the Federal Government was not fair in its dealing with the association.

He decried the situation whereby funds were being pumped into other sectors such as banking, aviation and textile industry that had challenges, yet education was continuously neglected.

“If we really want to turn around the country, we must address the issue of education because it is the bedrock of development,” he said.

“I believe that one of the ways of addressing some of these issues is for government to implement the 2009 agreement as this will place education on a sound footing.’’
He noted that Nigerian students and lecturers were continuously leaving the country to neighbouring countries in search of better education and teaching conditions.

Speaking on the issue, the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Rufai, told the committee that the Federal Government was working tirelessly to ensure that it met its own side of the agreement.
Mrs. Rufai said the implementation of the agreement was not something that could be completed within a short period as it required a very long and tedious process.

“Two of the issues have been implemented up to 100 per cent and the other issues too, progress has been made as there has been an increase in funding.’’

Also speaking, Prof. Julius Okogie, Executive Secretary, National Universities Commission (NUC), told the committee that the tuition paid in universities in Nigeria was very low compared to other countries.

Mr. Okogie appealed to ASUU to call off the strike since negotiations were already on.
Some members of the committee including Senator Oluremi Tinubu (ACN-Lagos) and Rep. Farouk Lawan (PDP-Kano), also appealed to ASUU to soften its stand and call off the strike in the interest of the students.

The committee later went into a closed session with the stakeholders, but there are no indications that an agreement was reached.

Patience Jonathan Blames Elders For Fuelling Rivers Crisis

First Lady Patience Jonathan
First Lady Patience Jonathan

Wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan, on Monday faulted the contributions of some unnamed persons she referred to as “otherwise respected elders” who, by their views, had been contributing to the crisis in Rivers State.

While describing their utterances as unfortunate, she called on all feuding parties in the state to sheathe their swords in the interest of innocent women and children, who, she said, would naturally be victims of the mayhem.

The president’s wife’s position was contained in a statement by her spokesman, Mr. Ayo Osinlu.

The statement read, “We therefore call on elders of the state to position themselves appropriately in the circumstances, and continue to seek the highest good of Rivers State and its people, by stone-walling the activities of the few, who would rather fan little embers into a consuming inferno.

“Recent experience whereby certain otherwise respected elders of the country, both from within and outside Rivers State, were canvassing views that seemed to intensify the heat in Rivers State, is certainly unfortunate.”

Mrs. Jonathan, who has been roundly criticised as one of the masterminds of the crisis alongside her husband, called on warring politicians in the state to spare a thought for the social, political and economic costs of the crisis, and consider an urgent way to resolve all political differences.

She warned all stakeholders to ensure that the situation in the state did not degenerate to a level that could be hijacked by miscreants and hoodlums, thus exposing everyone to insecurity from which there might be no easy escape. Chukwudi Akasike, Port Harocurt

Meanwhile, the senator, representing Rivers South-East in the National Assembly, Senator Magnus Abe, has declared that no amount of opposition can remove the Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.

Abe, who bared his mind on the political crisis rocking the state, on Monday, explained that any move to impeach Amaechi would not succeed because the governor was “ordained by God.”
Speaking during the presentation of scholarship to 77 university undergraduates from Rivers South-East in Khana Local Government Area, Abe appealed to the people of the state not to be distracted by the political situation in the state.

He said, “We are living at a time when politicians of all shades are going around collecting young people, collecting people’s children; daughters and sons to help them pursue their personal ambitions or their public aspirations.”

Also, 17 suspended councillors of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area have faulted the resolution of the House of Representatives to take over the affairs of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Members of the House of Assembly had engaged one another in a free-for-all, following an attempt by five lawmakers to impeach the Speaker of the 32-member House, Mr. Otelemaba Amachree.
The councillors, who were suspended alongside the chairman of the council, Mr. Timothy Nsirim, and his vice, Mr. Solomon Eke, for an alleged financial recklessness and abuse of office, described the resolution of the federal lawmakers as hasty and selective.

Speaking with newsmen in Orazu, Obio/Akpor on Monday, Chief Whip of the Obio/Akpor Legislative Assembly, Mr. Aruchi Amechi, argued that the councillor should have been protected when they were suspended by the House of Assembly.

Amechi said, “We express reservation over the selective manner the House of Representatives decided to intervene in the State House of Assembly matter. While our legislative council was first hit, our senior colleagues did not deem it fit to come to our aid.”

Woman Roasts Her 7yr Old Step-son’s Hand [Photo]

Awwal1

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a woman, Mrs Aminot Otun, for roasting the right hand of her seven-year-old step-son, Awwal Otun, last Thursday.

Awwal’s hand was allegedly roasted for adding drops of liquid disinfectant to his bath water.
According to Ngozi Ekwerike-Okoro, President, Child to Child Network, a Non Governmental Organisation, NGO, a distressed call from one of Otun’s neighbours at 59, Suenu Street, Surulere, Lagos saved Awwal’s life.

Awwal was rushed to the Mother and Child Hospital at Gbaja where another drama ensued as the doctor on duty refused to treat or admit the boy despite pleas that the hospital was built purposely for mothers and children in the state.

According to his teachers, Awwal, who is in primary one, should not be allowed to go back to his step-mother because he is always coming to school with bruises as the neighbours who pleaded anonymity said that had been the normal punishment for the boy’s mistakes.

Awwal was later taken to a nearby private hospital for treatment and he is currently at Juvenile Welfare Centre of Alakara Police Station.

The story

According to Ngozi, “On July 11, 2013, Awwal was rushed to the Randle General Hospital, Mother and Child Centre, Gbaja, at about 6:30pm after a distress call from neighbours.

“He sustained serious injuries from fire burns inflicted on him by the step-mother who is now in police custody.

“At the hospital, we requested to see the welfare officer who we were told had closed for the day but after narrating our mission to one of the staff she referred us to the chief matron. The chief matron issued an emergency card to the boy and directed him to see the doctor.

“The doctor, however, refused to attend to the boy, because according to her, the hospital did not have enough space to accommodate the boy, as he would need admission for intensive care.

“We pleaded with the doctor to at least administer some first aid on the boy but she refused. We went back to the chief matron who told us after consulting with the doctor that Surulere General Hospital (Mother and Child Centre) does not have the facility to deal with such cases. They said our best chance would be to go to Ikeja General Hospital.

“We eventually left in disappointment and went to a private hospital in Mushin, close to the juvenile centre, where he got immediate attention and was treated free of charge.

7yr Old Awwal Recounts Ordeal

The boy said he added small quantity of Izal disinfectant to his bath water and his step mother got angry and put his hand on a burning stove since Sunday and he was not taken to hospital till Thursday when neighbours called the Lagos State Child Protection Network who mobilised the JWC Alakara to rescue him.

Abass said, “My, Lord, the prosecution is out to mislead this honourable court as no human head was found with the accused.”

Adedayo, however, said, “If you have any evidence, you should submit it before this court. And I am yet to see that.”

Police Gun Down Killers Of Lagos Hotelier

Five of the gunmen who stormed the 04 Hotel in Ajah area of Lagos last Sunday have been confirmed dead.

The robbers were killed in the early hours of Sunday (yesterday) in a shoot-out with the Special Anti Robbery Squad Ikeja, Lagos.

Several gunmen had stormed the hotel in a purported reprisal for the arrest of a colleague by SARS operatives at the same hotel. Seven persons including the owner of the hotel, Olarenwaju Subair, were killed in the attack.

Police sources who craved anonymity, said that the robbers who were moving in a convoy of an Honda Odyssey and a Jeep on Sunday (yesterday) for another operation, had earlier attacked some policemen at Ajah and later at Ajao Estate before the shoot-out with SARS operatives.

A police source said, “The robbers began their operation around 1am at Ajah but just as they were moving out, they encountered a team of policemen on routine patrol. They opened fire on them and in the ensuing exchange of fire, one policeman was killed in the process and another wounded.

“Immediately, the robbers aborted their mission and drove drown to Ajao Estate. They got to Ajao Estate at about 2am and attacked a major dealer in phones, ipads and other ICT products.

“In the process, a police corporal, attached to the Mobile Police Force was killed. Valuables worth millions of naira were carted away.”

Having received a directive from the Lagos Commissioner of Police, Mr. Umar Manko, to apprehend the robbers, SARS operatives led by their leader, SP Abba Kyari, were said to have laid ambush along the Mushin/Ojuelegba areas while two more teams went towards the island to block the robbers escape.

Not long after, the robbers who eventually drove through the Mushin/Ojuelegba road, were said to have opened fire on sighting the SARS teams.
In an intense gunfight that reportedly lasted 30 minutes, the robbers were chased from Stadium in Surulere to Eko Bridge.

The source said, “Some of the robbers had been wounded in the car from the gunfight but that didn’t stop them from driving. It wasn’t until the driver of one of their vehicles sustained a gunshot injury to the neck that the vehicles stopped at Eko Bridge.

“Some were already dead in the car. Several more fled their vehicles and jumped over the Eko Bridge into the ocean below. But some of those who jumped must have been wounded, because there was blood on the rails of the bridge.”

It was learnt that items from Ajao estate were recovered from the vehicles of the robbers. Policemen from the Area A command and the Marine Police later combed the waters, but did not find any corpse.

Sunderland, Fulham Join Race To Sign Osaze

Osaze Odemwingie
Osaze Odemwingie

Four Premier League clubs Sunderland, West Ham, Hull and Fulham were on Sunday credited with an interest in West Brom frontman Osaze Odemwingie.

According to Skysports, the 31-year-old has been looking to leave the Hawthorns since his proposed January move to QPR fell through.

With little chance of him being offered a clean slate with the Baggies, it is expected that the Nigeria international will be on the move this summer.

As a proven goalscorer at the highest level, it comes as no surprise to find that numerous clubs are readying an approach for his services.

Osaze, who has also been linked with Crystal Palace, could be available for as little as £1.5m.
But it seems unlikely that Sunderland would look to boost their front-line with the Nigerian.

Sunderland’s transfer policy this summer has centred around promising youngsters from abroad, with the potential for re-sale value, or those available for reasonable fees and wages.

Meanwhile, with Osaze is expected to depart after his behaviour last season, West Brom manager Steve Clarke is chasing Tottenham striker Clint Dempsey to add more options to his forward line. Romelu Lukaku has returned to Chelsea after his loan.

West Brom are facing problems to sign Dempsey with Spurs looking to receive at least £6m for the American, his wages are also thought to be too high for the Baggies.
