"I Dont Owe You Anthing," 2Face Addresses BlackFace

"I Dont Owe You Anthing," 2Face Addresses BlackFace

Going by recent indications, members of the defunct music group,
Plantashun Boiz, 2Face Idibia and Blackface might have a few issues to
sort out with each other. The 'bone-of-contention' is nothing new,
Blackface is still upset over not being given his due on 2Face's
breakaway hit song, "African Queen."

Blackface insists that he also has a share in the glory and therefore
is entitled to whatever revenue 2Face earns from the song.

The 2Face Idibia camp has reacted to the claim by saying "2Face
doesn't owe Blackface anything". According to a rep for the singer,
"African Queen" was produced under the Kennis Music imprint, and as
such 2Face cannot personally be held responsible for paying his former
group member.

The strain in the relationship between these two became more obvious
after 2Face & Annie's fairytale wedding in Dubai, which Blackface
wasn't invited to.

Olamide becomes First Nigerian ambassador for CIROC

Sources revealed to TheNETNG that Olamide has signed a multimillion
Naira endorsement deal with alcoholic drink Ciroc Ultra Premium vodka
and will become the first Nigerian ambassador for the alcoholic
beverage.

Olamide's management has yet to respond to our queries but inside
sources tell us that the deal has been signed and sealed already. 'The
money had to be sent in three parts, that's how huge it is', an
insider tells us.

Ciroc, produced and distributed by Diageo is looking at promoting
their brand in West Africa after launching in 2011.

By signing Olamide as ambassador, Ciroc is adopting the similar
marketing model practised in the US; the likes of French Montana, Rick
Ross, DJ Khaled, Ray Jay, Funkmaster Flex are all ambassadors for the
drink.

Teenager kills his girlfriend by sitting on her head

A man was arrested and charged with murder after sitting on his girlfriend’s head until she died, according to police reports.
A central Pennsylvania man suffocated his 17-year-old girlfriend, by sitting on her head after he intentionally drove into a guardrail at 100 mph in the middle of the night, officials said.
Police filed murder and other charges Friday against Benjamin Daniel Klinger, 19, for the death of Sammi Heller on an interstate near Manheim. Klinger is accused of crashing on purpose, then killing Heller by sitting on her until she suffocated.
“At first glance, this appeared to be just another tragic accident,” Lancaster County District Attorney Craig Stedman told a local Pennsylvania newspaper. “However, the police worked hand in hand with our forensic experts who saw this was as a much more complicated and sinister criminal scheme,” he added.
Based on medical records, the investigators concluded later that Klinger was pretending to be unconscious. Detectives recovered marijuana, cash, a digital scale, a pipe, pills and a black gun from the accident scene.
Klinger was also charged with aggravated assault, drug offenses and driving violations.
Several months ago Klinger faced a charge of simple assault for allegedly running over the foot of Heller and two counts of disseminating sexually explicit material to a minor for allegedly sending photos and videos of Heller.

What President Jonathan Brought Back From China

President Goodluck Jonathan and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday presided over the signing of accords between Nigeria and China to facilitate $1.1 billion in low-interest loans for infrastructure and other critical needs in Nigeria.

China, which is increasingly looking to Africa for oil and other natural resources, is offering Nigeria:
Loans to help fund airport terminals in four cities, roads, a light-rail line for its capital, a hydropower plant and oil and gas infrastructure.

Jinping said both countries had been brought together by a common task of national development. He said: “As a proverb of Nigeria reads, ‘A man cannot sit down alone to plan for prosperity.’”

Jonathan, on a four-day trip to China, has in his entourage about a dozen of his cabinet ministers including those for petroleum resources, trade and transport, as well as governors, senior government officials and businesspeople.

Following a meeting between the two Presidents, representatives from both countries signed five deals, including a lending agreement between China’s Import-Export Bank and the Nigerian Finance Ministry for the expansion of the airport terminals and an economic and technical cooperation pact.

Finance Minister, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said the loans being finalised during this trip were part of $3 billion approved by China at interest rates of less than three per cent.

Chinese companies are already building roads across Nigeria in contracts worth $1.7 billion.

China’s demand for crude oil produced in Nigeria is expected to rise tenfold to 200,000 barrels a day by 2015, according to the Federal Government delegation.

Zhang Chun, an expert on Africa at the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Studies, said Nigeria was important to China because it had the largest economy in West Africa and because it had oil. He said: “There is great potential for developing cooperation in this field.”

China has become the world’s third-largest country doing mergers and acquisitions in Africa, favouring the oil and gas sector, according to a report by international law firm, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer released on Monday.

Meanwhile, Minister of State 1, for Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, said in Abuja yesterday that the President’s visit to China was discussed at the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting.

She expressed the importance of the trip to the country’s economic development in terms of attracting Direct Foreign Investment.

Responding to the issue that the President was not received on arrival in Beijing by his Chinese counterpart, Minister of State 1, for Foreign Affairs, Prof. Viola Onwuliri, said there was nothing wrong for Jonathan to be received on arrival in Beijing by China’s Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Li Yucheng.

She explained that in international relations, there are certain arrangements put in place for specific purposes, claiming that China didn't look down on Nigeria, considering its position in Africa.
Please....if you know Nigeria's position in Africa, apart from size, kindly tell us.

SHOCKING: Serving Police Officer Arrested In Armed Robbery

This is indeed a case of "one day bush meat go catch the hunter"! It was indeed a sad case as latest findings have shown that some senior police officers now engage in armed robbery operations secretly.
Report gathered that a service police officer has been arrested among his gang of armed robbers during their robbery operation. Surprisingly, the inspector confessed that he was introduced into the dirty operation by a serving Police ASP...
The 60-year-old serving Police Inspector Nanagha Aduoumeni, who is a member of a six-man police armed robbery gang was paraded on Thursday by operatives of the 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, in Benin.

Inspector Aduoumeni, attached to ‘A’ Department of Nigeria Police Force, Bayelsa State Command, was arrested on June 26, 2013, by troops of 222 Battalion on patrol at Orhoror Junction, along Bomadi Road in Delta State at about 2am.

The Brigade Public Relations Officer, Capt. Roselyn Managbe, who addressed journalists on behalf of the Brigade Commander, Brig-Gen. Pat Akem, said Inspector Aduoumeni was caught blocking the road with woods, while other members of his gang who were armed, took cover in thick bush along the road.

“When they sighted the Nigerian Army Quick Response Group driving towards them, Inspector Nanagha tried to withdraw back into the bush, but he was caught while other members of his gang escaped into the creeks,” Capt. Managbe explained.
In his confessional statement, the robber/police officer revealed that members of his gang were all serving police personnel who indulge in robbery activities after their normal police duties.

The suspect also confessed that Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Okubopagha and Inspector Okoro of ‘B’ Department, Nigeria Police, are members of his gang.”

Inspector Aduoumeni who confirmed his involvement in a robbery operation, said he joined the Police Force May 1st, 1982 and that he was introduced to armed robbery by an ASP, claiming that he was caught in his first operation with the gang.

He said: “I was arrested at Bomadi. I was caught the first day I joined. We were six in number. Others were in uniform but I was not. The ASP introduced me, they were with Police guns. We robbed only two vehicles. When we were about to go they gave me only N5,000.00. I don’t know how they collected the money.”

Asked how he feels with his arrest, the suspect and father of two from Ayakoromo, Delta State, said, “I feel for my children and wife now that I have been arrested."

The army said said the police-robber would be handed over to the police authority for prosecution.

Jonathan Is After Amaechi For Winning Govs Forum Election

Governors oppose to President Goodluck Jonathan's move to impose a Chairman on the Nigerian Governors Forum has said that the crisis in Rivers State was engineered to punish Governor Rotimi Amaechi for winning the chairmanship election of the Nigeria Governors' Forum.

Shortly after the outcome of the election, the PDP suspended Amaechi from the party...

The governors said this in a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, and declared that what was happening in Rivers State was an assault on Nigeria's democracy.

The governors (11) were among the 19 governors that voted for Amaechi during the May 24 election, where he defeated Governor Jonah Jang of Plateau State by 19 votes to 16 votes.

Below is the Progressive Governors Forum's statement:

Rivers State Crisis: PGF Condemns Assault on Nigeria’s Democracy

Events in Rivers State resulting in the shameful occupation of the State Government House by members of the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 are a direct assault on Nigeria’s democracy. These developments are not only worrisome but outrightly condemnable as an affront on the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Progressive Governors’ Forum (PGF) unequivocally condemns the ill-disguised attempt to create a State of Emergency in Rivers State by plunging the State into a needless and avoidable crisis.

All available evidences surrounding the events of Tuesday and Wednesday, July 9 and 10 indicated that the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Joseph Mbu and his men did not act in a professional manner. Before now, the State Police Commissioner has exhibited very clear bias against the Governor and other State Officials. This is a dangerous development that would only produce anarchy with unpredictable consequences.

Events of July 9, 10 in Rivers State represent acts sponsored by anarchists whose interest include subverting our democracy and expose the lives of democratically elected representatives to great danger. As it is today, the orderly conduct of democratic institutions in Rivers States have been impaired and the life of Governor Amaechi and his team are in great danger. The constitutional responsibility of the State House of Assembly is being impeded and in the circumstance the House of Representatives has voted to take over the functions of the State House of Assembly as provided under section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution.

It is very clear to all discerning Nigerians that the crisis in Rivers State is a product of intolerance and highhanded attempts to undermine our rights as Governors acting under the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) to freely choose our leaders. Having elected Governor Amaechi on May 24 as the Chairman of NGF, the anti-democratic forces against the election are now using other security agencies to threaten and intimidate Governor Amaechi and in the process engineer anarchy and endanger innocent lives and property in Rivers State.

This is not only a condemnable act but a gross abuse of power. We strongly call on President Goodluck Jonathan to not only exercise his moral authority, but also apply his constitutional responsibilities to ensure the restoration of peace and protection of the Governor and all citizens.

Should the crisis in Rivers State continue and anything happen to the Governor or any official for that matter, the Nigerian leadership wouldn’t be absolved of responsibility.

We call on all Nigerians to do all within their powers to prevail on all in positions of trust and responsibilities to exercise their power with restraint and refrain from steps that might plunge this fragile democracy into a descent to depravity.

The 35-year-old Alhaja who claimed her parents hail from Ilorin, Kwara State capital, but had for many years stayed in Cotonou to make ends meet, said her second husband, Gbenga Ojuoye, who is responsible for her seven-month-old pregnancy, introduced her to armed robbery.

“I was once married. In the first marriage, I was blessed with three children, including twins. My first child, Mujidat, a female is 16 years old, but I divorced my first husband.

“I deal in local herbs in Cotonou. I prepare herbs for married ladies who are looking for the fruits of the womb. It was in that process, I came in contact with Gbenga Ojuoye, who I knew to be a member of the National Union of Road Transport Workers at Owode-Yewa area of Ogun State. We met at Owode-Apa two years ago."
Report gathered that the police is at a loss on whether to commence her prosecution or not, due to her being heavily pregnant.

Naija Big Girl Kills Herself After Her Facebook Lover Wed Her Friend Due To Her Fault

This is what you get these days when ladies only love men by what they can see; no true love again!
A big girl identified as Nkechi who hailed from Onitsha, Anambra State but settled in Asaba with her parents after graduation while searching for employment, got involved in Facebook Love at the centre where she was learning Computer.
Somehow she met a rich young man online, a Nigerian. The man decided to disguised himself as a ‘cripple’ to her whenever he arrive Nigeria, but he is actually a lawyer trained in the United Kingdom...
It was gathered that after series of chats, the 'cripple' asked for her hand in marriage and Nkechi immediately accepted, not knowing that the man will disguise as a cripple to test her. After their relationship which lasted about seven months online, the young lawyer, who was identified as Henry (surname withheld), returned to Nigeria on a wheelchair.
Nkechi, accompanied by her friend, went to the airport to welcome him, but was shocked to see him on a wheelchair and when he begged her to marry him, she refused.
According to reports, Nkechi continued to refuse his proposal, despite his pleas and a visit to her house. She also did not listen to her friend. Her friend, identified as Onyinye, a fashion boutique owner, living somewhere around Infant Jesus area of Asaba, was shocked at her friend’s decision after pleading with her to reconsider her "wheel chair" lover, but Nkechi refused.
Unfortunately for Nkechi, her friend Onyinye started feeling pity for Henry's condition, not knowing that the man is not actually a cripple. Onyinye thus accepted to marry Henry since Nkechi has turned him down.

Consequently, report  gathered that Henry went ahead to finalise wedding plans with Onyinye. They had the traditional marriage and white wedding last weekend in Asaba.
However, at the wedding reception, Henry got off his wheelchair to the amazement of all and told everyone present that he was never a ‘cripple,’ but had to disguise himself because he was hoping to get married to a Nigerian lady who would have genuine love for him, irrespective of his "condition".
It was jubilation all the way and people started praising Onyinye for being a virtuous woman.

When the news got to Nkechi to her lover was actually not a cripple but just testing her, she collapsed.
Disillusioned 30-year-old Nkechi, a graduate of Micro-biology later committed suicide due to the shame that her finacee, who she met on Facebook, had gotten married to her best friend.
In her suicie note, Nkechi wrote:
I have gone to rest as I cannot stand the situation after the house I built has collapsed. This is a lesson for single ladies; never reject any suitor, so that you don’t end up dead.”
The Police in Delta State confirmed Nkechi's unfortunate action, her parents are said to be in shock.

Angry Mob Sets Robbers Ablaze For Stealing Recharge Cards

The mob in action
The mob in action
An angry mob has set three suspected armed robbers ablaze in Ikotun, Lagos State. We learnt on Thursday that the robbers were set on fire on Wednesday evening, shortly after robbing a recharge card trader at Second Junction bus stop on Governor’s Road.
Our correspondent, who visited the area, observed burnt tyres, carcass of a burnt motorcycle and some human flesh on the side of the road.
The recharge card trader, Ese Akporhono, who had a bandage on her head, told our correspondent that the robbers came to her shop posing as customers.
She said a few seconds later, the suspects pointed a gun at her and stole recharge cards worth N400,000 before fleeing.
She said, “Around 5pm, I was closing the shop when the men approached me saying they wanted to buy recharge card.
“Before I knew what was happening, the men brought out guns and went into my shop, They stole recharge cards and money. I engaged them in a struggle and attempted to prevent them from fleeing. They overpowered me and used the butts of their guns to hit me in the face and head.”
Our correspondent learnt that the robbers allegedly snatched a motorcycle and shot a man in the area and were fleeing when a motorist knocked them down.
An eyewitness, who requested anonymity, said a bystander prevented them from fleeing as he pelted them with stones while they were attempting to stand up.
Other residents quickly joined the bystander and grabbed the weak robbers, beating them up to a pulp.
He said, “After the vehicle knocked them down while they were attempting to escape, we seized them and beat them to a pulp. The crowd grew larger and this attracted the attention of policemen.”
Our correspondent learnt that a team of policemen from Ikotun Police Station stormed the scene and attempted to rescue the robbers but were overwhelmed by the mob.
It was learnt that policemen even fired gunshots into the air but the mob remained adamant.
A woman, who runs a bar in the area, said another team of policemen also arrived from Area M, Idimu, but the mob set the robbers ablaze.
She said, “The policemen came in a patrol vehicle and asked the crowd to hand over the robbers but they refused because they did not trust the police.
“Another team of policemen also came but the crowd ignored them. Some of them (crowd) got tyres, placed them round the robbers’ necks and set them ablaze.
“They however handed over their guns to the police.”
When asked why the residents took laws into their own hands, the woman said there had been an increase in robbery in the area and the police had failed them.
She said, “It is because armed robbers have been terrorising us that is why we close our shops early. Last year, a pregnant woman was robbed and killed in this area.
“We cannot continue to fold our arms. By this act, robbers will be afraid anytime they think of coming here.”
Akporhono told our correspondent that her recharge cards were still with the police and they had refused to return them to her.
“Police are holding my recharge cards as exhibit, I want them back because I am the victim,” she said.
When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said she was aware of the incident and promised to call back. [Metro Punch]

FG Plans Emergency Rule In Rivers –Opposition Governors • It Is Not True, Says Presidency

Eleven governors in opposition political parties, have condemned the crisis in Rivers State, describing it as a ploy by the Federal Government to declare emergency rule in the oil-rich state.
They made the claim just as the embattled Governor of the State, Rotimi Amaechi, told visiting members of the Senate Committee on State and Local Government Administration, that the state(Rivers) was under siege.
Amaechi’s allegation is almost in tandem with the Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu’s belief that the Commissioner of Police, Rivers State Command, Joseph Mbu, had become the governor of the crisis-ridden state.
The 11 opposition governors, who are members of the Action Congress of Nigeria, All Nigeria Peoples Party, Congress for Progressive Change and All Progressives Grand Alliance , said in a statement in Abuja on Thursday, that what was happening in Rivers State, was an assault on Nigeria’s democracy.
Their statement, which was made available to journalists, reads in part, “Events in Rivers State resulting in the shameful occupation of the State Government House by members of the Nigeria Police Force on Wednesday, July 10, 2013 are a direct assault on Nigeria’s democracy.
“These developments are not only worrisome but outright condemnable as an affront to the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The Progressive Governors’ Forum unequivocally condemns the ill-disguised attempt to create a state of emergency in Rivers State by plunging the state into a needless and avoidable crisis.
“All available evidences surrounding the events of Tuesday and Wednesday indicated that the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr. Mbu, and his men did not act in a professional manner.
“Before now, the Police Commissioner had exhibited very clear bias against the Governor (Amaechi) and other state officials. This is a dangerous development that would only produce anarchy with unpredictable consequences.”
They added that events of July 9 and 10 in the state represented “acts sponsored by anarchists,” whose interest included subverting democracy and exposing the lives of democratically elected representatives to great danger.
According to them, “The constitutional responsibility of the State House of Assembly is being impeded and in the circumstance the House of Representatives has voted to take over the functions of the state Assembly as provided under Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution.
“It is very clear to all discerning Nigerians that the crisis in Rivers State is a product of intolerance and highhanded attempts to undermine our rights as governors acting under the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to freely choose our leaders.”

• Crisis not unconnected to NGF poll
The opposition governors said that having elected Amaechi on May 24 as the NGF Chairman , the anti-democratic forces against the election were now using other security agencies to threaten and intimidate him.
They said the same forces were in the process of engineering anarchy and endangering the lives of innocent persons and property in the state.
They therefore called on President Goodluck Jonathan not to only exercise his moral authority, but also apply his constitutional responsibilities to ensure the restoration of peace and protection of the governor and all citizens of the state.
“Should the crisis in Rivers State continue and anything happen to the governor or any official for that matter, the Nigerian leadership would not be absolved of blame,” they warned.
They called on all Nigerians to do all within their powers to prevail on those in positions of trust and responsibilities to exercise their powers with restraint and refrain from steps that could plunge “our fragile democracy” into a descent.

• Rivers under siege – Amaechi
Shortly before the governors of the opposition parties made their statement public, Amaechi, told the Senate Committee on State and Local Government Administration investigating the crisis in the state how tear-gas canisters were shot into the state Government House.
Amaechi, who expressed shock over the sudden withdrawal of soldiers and Armoured Personnel Carrier attached to Government House, lamented that security commanders had not held meetings with him in the last two months.
He said, “Yesterday (Wednesday), they were shooting tear-gas canisters into Government House. When we were meeting with the Deputy Inspector-General, the police claimed that it was inadvertent that they shot tear-gas canisters into the Government House.
“So, I asked one question. Supposing it was a live bullet and it hit me? and they said, ‘No, the governor was not outside.’ But I said I was outside.
“We are under siege here. For two months now, we have not met with security men. Security commanders in the state don’t come to me any longer. They are either scared or they deliberately don’t want to see me.”

• Soldiers withdrawn from governor
The governors also alleged that soldiers attached to him were withdrawn on Wednesday and Thursday, thereby further exposing him to danger.
“They withdrew soldiers attached to me yesterday(Wednesday) and this(Thursday) morning, they withdrew the APC attached to Government House, ” he lamented.
Earlier, the Chairman of the Senate Committee, Kabiru Gaya, had said, they were in the state to find out how “best we (Senate) could have the (Rivers State) legislators perform their functions without undue interference.”
He pointed out that the panel would after the courtesy visit on the governor, discuss with him to know what happened.
Gaya added,” We also need to talk with the Assembly members on both sides, including the Commissioner of Police, the SSS(State Security Service) and the JTF (Joint Task Force) . We have already asked the Commissioner of Police to meet us.
“The purpose of our mission is to ensure that peace returns to the state and to maintain good governance so that the people of the state will relax and have peace.
“We are not happy with what we saw and what we heard, especially when we saw people walking on the streets and their hands are up as if they are being interrogated, as if the the state is at war.”

• Rivers CP now gov, says Aliyu
In Minna, Niger State, Governor Aliyu lamented the crisis in Rivers State, saying what was on the ground indicated that the Commisssioner of Police was now the governor of of the state.
Aliyu, who received the Commissioner for Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission, Ambassador Zubairu Dada, at the Government House, said, “You saw what is happening in Rivers State? A Commissioner of Police has now become the Governor of Rivers State. Is that the image we want the world to look out to?
The governor, who is also the chairman of Northern States Governors’ Forum, recalled that since he became his state’s chief executive, “there has not been a Police Council Meeting.”
According to him, the PCM is supposed to “decide the appointment of Police Commissioners and their deployment.”
He therefore called for a reduction of the funds and powers available to the Federal Government because it(Federal Government) had no business in the provision of health, water, agriculture and education.
“There is too much money at the centre for the Federal Government to spend and that is why they are creating problems for the states, “ Aliyu advised.
Pointing out that Nigeria was in a bad shape, he claimed that nobody knows the amount of oil the country produces.

• Jonathan not behind Rivers mayhem
Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, in an interview with our correspondent described the claim by opposition governors that President Goodluck Jonathan planned to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State as untrue.
He said the claim was a mere opposition statement.

The presidential aide said rather than dragging the name of the President into the crisis, Governor Rotimi Amaechi should be advised to face his problem squarely.

He said, “That claim is not true. It is a mere opposition statement. That is not the first state House of Assembly in Nigeria that there will be problem. The President has nothing to do with it.
“Rather than dragging the name of the President to the crisis, Amaechi should be advised to face his problem squarely.”’

Also, Jonathan has denied instigating the crisis in the Rivers State House of Assembly, saying as a President, he will never support any actions that negate his commitment to the rule of law.
He also called on those behind the mayhem to sheathe their swords and show greater respect for the constitution and the rule of law.

Jonathan’s position was contained in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati.

The statement reads in part, “The Presidency has also noted with regret the continuing attempts by some individuals and groups to place responsibility for the unpleasant developments in Rivers State
on President Jonathan.

“We are constrained to state once again that there is absolutely no factual basis for suggestions that some of the politicians involved in the current dispute are acting at the behest of the President.”
Expressing concern over what he called untoward political developments in the state, Jonathan urged members of the state Assembly and all other political gladiators in the state to put the interests of the state and the nation above their personal egos.

Ayo Olukotun: Is A Nigerian Nelson Mandela A Possibility?

mandellllla

Nelson Mandela’s prolonged stay in hospital for lung-related complications elicited in his country folk and much of mankind, unprecedented outpouring of good wishes, pro-Mandela demonstrations and prayer vigils for his quick recovery. The United States’ president, Barrack Obama, who let it be known that Mandela is one of his role models, made it a major part of his recent visit to South Africa to spend time with the iconic leader’s family and to express solidarity. Leaders, civil society actors, students and workers across the globe have identified with the ailing 94-year-old former president widely regarded as a transformational leader who permanently altered the course of history.

Against the backdrop of Mandela’s revered stature as a big impact and much loved statesman, the question arises as to whether Nigeria, Africa’s largest black country, can ever have a leader in the mould of Mandela. The question acquires urgency in the light of ongoing jostling for the nation’s presidency, two years ahead of the magic date of 2015.

We know for sure that very few leaders in world history so far have attracted the kind of uncommon love and bonding enjoyed by Mandela from his countrymen. Imaginably, reports that so and so Nigerian leader or former leader is hospitalised usually evoke feelings ranging from mild indifference to the dismissive Yoruba expression, “Onpe ko to ku” (What is stopping him from dying?) Sociologists tell us that such scornful utterances, pungent jokes and ridicule are ways in which afflicted societies get back at unpopular leaders. In other words, sooner than later, the rascality, double dealing and negligence of leaders have ways of catching up with them at least in the dismissive responses of popular culture.

But let us go back to the question of whether a Nigerian Mandela is on the cards or whether it is no more than an idle fantasy in the current circumstances. In bringing up this poser, this writer is well aware of excuses that have been offered on behalf of a sadly diminished political class such as we have. For example, some have argued that the division of the Nigerian public sphere into ethnic and religious war camps forecloses the possibility of a Nigerian Mandela. You can only have, they argue, an Igbo, Ijaw, Nupe or Yoruba Mandela because the reception and perception of leadership are affected by ethnic and religious prejudices.

At first blush, the argument seems persuasive; when you inspect it closely, however, in the light of South Africa’s own fractured, interracial public sphere, it falls apart easily. Mandela, wrote himself into iconic status, not just by the crucifix of 27 years in detention, 18 of which were spent in the lime quarries of the infamous and harshly isolated Robben Island prison, but perhaps more importantly by forging a “rainbow nation” out of the assortment of races that constitute South Africa. He not only refused to revenge his cruel victimisation under apartheid rule, but managed to persuade neo-apartheid forces under the Africaneer Volksfront Coalition, led by Gen. Constand Vilijden from precipitating a disastrous civil war in the heady days of 1993. If heroic resistance to white supremacist rule symbolised by dramatic suburban riots and relentless guerrilla tactics of the African National Congress created the opening for ending apartheid, it was Mandela’s statesmanship that enlarged that opening into a doorway that permitted the birth of the South African nation.

To get back to the point: Ethnicity and religious divisions even when intemperate cannot be the excuse for not having a Nigerian Mandela. Indeed, it may well be the turf as we saw in South Africa and in Abraham Lincoln’s the United States for great statesmen to arise, provided they are willing to place the larger interests of the nation above their personal conveniences.

There is the point, too, that by the time Mandela stepped down as president he could easily have converted his larger-than-life stature into extended, if not permanent rule. Conscious of legacy, and the need to engineer decent political values, he allowed a succession to Thabo Mbeki, a worthy leader in his own right who earned himself a good place in contemporary South African history.

In contrast, we do not see Nigerian leaders who are willing to forfeit the privileges of office in order to promote enduring values or even the survival in the short-term of a nation torn apart by the desperate hustle of its political class for office at any cost. Under the military, the norm was to proclaim what Larry Diamond famously called “transitions without end” in which programmes of so-called democratisation were used as pretexts for elongated personal rule. In the civilian dispensation which began in 1999, the recurrent refrain had been: No vacancy in Aso Rock. Ample sanctions of course await those foolhardy enough to contest the truth of that battle cry. You can check this out by recalling the travails of a former vice-president, Abubakar Atiku, and, currently, those of the Rivers State governor, Chibuike Amaechi.

Let me digress to posit that apartheid for all its abhorrent discrimination, left in South Africa an infrastructure, even if unevenly of political values into which its emergent black leaders were socialised, apart from substantial infrastructural development in the major cities which make the country look like many parts of the First World. Mandela was in a sense produced by that culture even as he opposed its extremities, drawing on, both in protest and in conciliation, essential elements of his African roots to produce a unique blend.

Back to Nigeria; our leadership deficit is matched only by the regression of values and of decency in political and social life. When was the last time any political office holder resigned their appointment on the ground of public opprobrium? Even when they face a storm, they inform us about which political enemies are behind it, rather than bow out honourably in order not to pre-empt public inquiry. Mandela gave himself up, poured his entire life into the struggle to first liberate his people and then to elevate their status and dignity. He cared less if he died or had to quit office in this all consuming enterprise.

For as long as Nigerian politicians and their praise singers do not see beyond their noses and material comforts; for as long as office seeking for short-term benefits is their preoccupation, such as it is today, so long will the prospect of a Nigerian Mandela appear like a sour jest. Worse still, a reprobate political class might bring the national roof crashing down on everybody.

We cannot foreclose however the possibility, even if currently, dim of a Mandela arising from the fringes and the shadows of the current Nigerian impasse. After all, we must keep hope alive in order to surmount or tide over depressing times.

APC Is A Political Fraud, Says Lamido

Jigawa State Governor-Alh-Sule-Lamido
Jigawa State Governor-Alh-Sule-Lamido

After a two-day state-wide sight-seeing in Jigawa State, four journalists sat with Governor Sule Lamido in his private chamber in the Governor’s Lodge, Dutse for an interactive session. Here is the excerpts of what he had to say about APC and Buhari;

APC interim national publicity secretary, Lai Mohammed was quoted as saying that by the middle of July the party would have 23 governors. Are you among those about to jump ship?

I’m highly amused. Do you know what they call self-wish? These are local propaganda which is terribly elementary. In 1999 we had PDP, AD and APP. After fourteen years in 2013, it is PDP only that has remained. AD had gone from AD into AC, into ACN, into something else and now going to APC.

APP had gone into ANPP and then later on they are going to something; they are going to APC. Now, CPC is a one-man party. Some politicians who lost out in PDP now see Buhari as their bread industry. So they hang on him and because he is very naïve, he thinks they are serious.
Did you say Buhari is naïve?

Absolutely! He is politically naïve. Yes, he is politically naïve. Absolutely!
Could you be more explicit?

I would say he should be walking with his eyes wide open because those around him in 1999 were somewhere else. Were they with him? Our people will say if you see a horse fully dressed walking alone in the forest, it must have thrown the owner off. Don’t ride it because it threw somebody away.

I have been wondering; they abuse the PDP that we are murderers, party of riggers, a party of whatever – it is evil. Fine! Why do they want murderer governors in their midst? Why do they want us to be there? Number two, this so called APC is again what you call political fraud because you may change the nomenclature – change it ten times over. Did people in the newly named party come from heaven? They are the same old people.

wpid-court_10.png

A 37-year-old stock broker, Ayoola Coker was yesterday sentenced to a 30 years imprisonment by an Ikeja High court for stealing N17.5 million belonging to his clients.

Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo gave the jail terms after the convict, had pleaded guilty to the charges preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, after his re-arraignment.

The judge found Coker guilty of all the 15-count charge of stealing, issuance of dud cheque, forgery and uttering leveled against him by the anti graft agency.

He was sentenced to two years imprisonment on each of the counts, but the court directed that the sentences are to run concurrently starting from December 1, 2011, when he was apprehended.
Though the trial judge noted that the convict made efforts to pay restitution to the victims, Mr Saheed Gbadamosi and his son, Taiwo by transferring the title deed of his landed property at Idimu, Lagos worth N8 million and a car valued N1 million to the victims.

“He was arraigned earlier on June 6, 2011 and pleaded not guilty. The voluntary changing of his plea to a guilty plea has demonstrated sufficient remorse as to warrant the leniency of the charge.”

Father Beheads Step-son Over Alleged Witchcraft

A middle aged man, Mr. Felix Lawson, has allegedly beheaded his six-year-old step-son, Effiong Lawson (fondly called Ifanyi) in Onna local Govt area of Akwa Ibom State.
Sources said Lawson, 43, who works at a place in Ibeno, a riverine community, had returned home from work and was enjoying his evening meal when his step-son sneaked into the backyard and whispered to his younger sister to bring him food remnant as he was said to very be hungry, having not eaten for the past three days.

Unknown to him, his father who was at home heard his voice, grabbed a machete and made for the backyard in search of him.Ifanyi and his brother took to their heels but he was not so lucky as his father who caught up with him before he could run far dealt him a blow on the head using the machete after which he fell and the father in a most barbaric manner used the machete to severe his head from the body.

When the deceased’s brother, Aniefiok Lawson was interrogated by the youth leaders of the area, he said, “Because we were hungry, Ifanyi asked me to escort him to the house so that we can beg our younger sister for food. We didn’t know that daddy was back from Ibeno.“Ifanyi went close to the house and called Unyime to bring us leftover food. It was already dark so when daddy opened the door and jumped out we didn’t see him. We ran but my brother who was crying and saying “daddy forgive me” could not run fast so daddy hit his head with his big cutlass.

He fell down and was crying as he continued to hit him with the cutlass.“I did not hear his voice again. I ran and hid in the bush. So, late in the night when the place was quiet, I went and joined two of my friends in the uncompleted building in the primary school where we usually sleep at night. I asked them if they saw Ifanyi and they said they hadn’t and in the morning, we saw a lot of blood-spilled at the place he was caught by daddy the previous night. [Leadership]

Transparency International Rates Nigeria As 8th Most Corrupt Nation In The World

image

Anti-corruption nonprofit Transparency International, TI, has released its 2013 Global Corruption Barometer, which surveyed residents in 107 countries, ranking Nigeria, Zambia, Paraguay, Mexico, Zimbabwe, Venezula and Russia as the largest countries on the globe with active corruption indices with Liberia and Mongolia leading the table.

According to the report, the world’s corrupt nations differ in many ways. Four are located in Africa, three in Latin America and two in Asia. These nations also vary considerably in size and population. Mongolia has just 3.2 million residents, while Mexico, Nigeria and Russia are three of the largest countries on the globe, each with more than 100 million people.

In Nigeria, 84% of those surveyed by Transparency International claimed corruption had increased in the past two years, a higher percentage than almost any other country in the world.Troublingly, 75% of those surveyed also said the government was, at best, ineffective at fighting corruption, worse than in all but 10 countries.

TI says Nigeria is heavily dependent on the oil industry, yet the government refuses to act on accusations that the oil companies are underreporting the value of the resources they extract and the tax they owe by billions of dollars. The report adds that “certain transparency groups also blamed politicians for encouraging corruption.

In 2012, Nigeria had just the 37th largest GDP in the world, despite having the world’s seventh largest population. In Liberia, the majority of Liberians surveyed said they believed the country was run either largely or entirely by a few entities acting in their own self interest.“A world-leading 86% of residents who spoke to Transparency International claimed their government had been either ineffective or very ineffective at fighting corruption, while 96% of residents claimed Liberia’s legislature was corrupt, also the highest percentage of any nation. A stunning 75% of residents surveyed claimed they had paid a bribe to secure some service, trailing only Sierra Leone.“In all, 80% of the population had at one point been asked to pay a bribe. Recently, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf fired the country’s auditor general for corruption. Many of those surveyed in the highly corrupt countries also felt their governments were not holding up their end of the bargain.”

According to the report, “in seven of the nine countries, more than half of those questioned felt their government was ineffective at fighting corruption. In Liberia, 86% of residents surveyed said their government was ineffective at fighting the problem. This was the largest proportion of any of the 107 nations Transparency International surveyed. While corruption appears to affect every part of the public sector, certain segments were much worse than the rest.

“Globally, at least 60% of respondents claimed political parties and police were corrupt. Additionally, more than 50% of people stated their legislature, their public officials and their judiciary were corrupt. In the world’s most corrupt nations, those institutions were, naturally, even worse. In Nigeria, 94% of people claimed their political parties were corrupt, the most in the world. Similarly, 96% of Liberians reported their legislature was corrupt, also the most in the world. In eight of the nine most corrupt nations, more than 80% of residents considered the police to be corrupt.” Via Pm News

Baby Without Brain Born In Kaduna

image
A woman believed to be in her 30’s yesterday gave birth to what appears to be a baby without a brain at the General hospital Kagarko, Kagarko local government area of Kaduna State.
We gathered that the woman delivered her baby early yesterday morning in the hands of nurses and midwives at the hospital.Recall that only on Monday, a woman had given birth to a monkey-like baby at the same hospital, incase you missed the story, you can read it HERE

A health worker at the hospital told our correspondent that the baby which later died after delivery was born abnormal.“The events of the past two days are making everybody scared in the area. We cannot understand why things like these are happening in our local government,” he said.“What is happening requires medical explanation. We need to know whether it is human error or a miracle.”
When contacted on phone, the medical director of the hospital, Dr. Habila Kambai, said that the baby was born with a “very small head.” [Leadership]
