Woman Accuses Husband Of Selling Their Son For N2m

A woman, Elizabeth Morenike, at the Ebute Meta Magistrate’s court, accused her husband, Toye Orire, of selling their undergraduate son, Segun, for N2m.

Morenike said although she had seven children for Toye, they were not legally married.
She alleged that her husband collected money from the accused person, Ehinmosan Odumayo, whom she claimed took Segun out to the high seas for work on June 2, 2012.

During a cross-examination by the defence counsel, she said Segun mysteriously disappeared.
She said, “On June 2, 2012, around 6am, I was in my house when my son, Segun Orire, came to tell me that he wanted to follow Odumayo to work.

“I was preparing to go to the market when he told me, so I gave him the permission to go.
“When I came back, I couldn’t find him and I became bothered. So, I asked his junior sister, and she said he had followed Odumayo to Takwa Bay.

“I searched for him, and after I could not find him, I went to meet Odumayo to demand my son’s whereabouts.

“Odumayo then said he left my son in a flag boat.”

She said ever since the incident, her son had not been found.

She alleged that her husband gave up on the search for their son and collected N2m as settlement.
However, the defence argued that Segun’s mother was inconsistent in her claims on the time her child left the house, and whether she saw the accused taking her child out on the said date,.

When the magistrate, Mrs. K.O Doja-ojo, asked him to end the questioning, the defence consel said, “Sir, we are not done yet. We have about 115 questions to ask the witness.”

The matter was later adjourned till July 22.

"God told me not to celebrate my 50th birthday' - TB Joshua explains why he didn't celebrate

The founder of Synagogue Church of All Nations turned 50 on June 12th and shunned all forms of celebration put together by his church members, choosing instead to celebrate by communicating with God at the 'mountains'. He explains why:
"There was a divine message to me to shun all activities on my 50th. I don't act if I don't get the call. There's a need to keep one's life in prayer. What I need now is more commitment and time with God and not celebrating. I will only celebrate when I'm 60. That is when I will forget about 50. Even the little activity put together by my church members, they know they were not celebrating Mr T.B Joshua rather Prophet T.B Joshua and it is their divine duty to do so.

I’ll Be Satisfied When No Nigerian Is Hungry -President Jonathan

President Jonathan
President Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday said his job as the leader of the country could only be complete when no Nigerian went to bed hungry.

Jonathan made the submission at the opening of a two-day summit by Rockefeller Foundation with the theme, ‘Realising the potential of African Agriculture.’

He said his administration’s successes in the agricultural sector were recognised on a global scale recently when the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations gave an award to Nigeria for achieving the Millennium Development Goal on hunger by reducing the number of hungry people in the country.

“This milestone was achieved three years ahead of the 2015 target date set for the Millennium Development Goals! While we are delighted at this recognition, we know our job is only done when not one Nigerian goes to bed hungry,” the President declared.

He added that to drive the nation’s agriculture, his administration had ended the approach of agriculture as a development programme, saying the government was now treating it as a business.

While saying that private sector investments were expanding rapidly from seeds and fertiliser companies and agro-processors, Jonathan said in the last one year, over $8bn of private investment commitments had been made to the sector.

He said unless agriculture was transformed in Africa, the continent’s economies would not grow as millions of Africans depended on the sector for their livelihoods.

Jonathan said, “The transformation of agriculture in Nigeria is a centrepiece of the economic transformation agenda of my government. Nigeria is known for oil. But today, many countries around the world have found oil.

“The recent discovery of shale oil and gas means that we can no longer depend solely on oil to drive the economy. With abundant land and water resources, and an abundant vibrant labour force, Nigeria has all it takes to use agriculture as its new frontier for growth.”

The President said to reduce the nation’s dependency on rice imports as the world’s largest importer of the commodity, his administration set out to make Nigeria self-sufficient in rice production by 2015.

Ambitious as this goal seems, he said his administration was on the way to achieving the target of rice-self-sufficiency.

“Dry season rice production in 2012/2013 unleashed a rice revolution across 10 states in the northern part of our country. Our farmers produced a record 1.1 million metric tonnes of paddy rice, which represents one third of the additional rice paddy we need to be self-sufficient in rice by 2015,” he said.

President, Rockefeller Foundation, Dr. Judith Rodin, commended the administration’s programmes aimed at transforming the agricultural sector.

She noted that the future of Africa depended on new innovation framework and financing strategy in transforming the agriculture sector.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, said the Federal Government would train 750,000 young graduates in commercial farming scheme known as ‘Nagroprenuers.’

Adesina said, “This initiative will change the labour composition of the agriculture sector. The Federal Government will provide access to land, technical skills, business management skills and the finance for this programme.

“The programme will turn the agriculture sector into a more competitive sector.”

Man Tortures His 13yr Old Son To Death, Buries Corpse

Arogundade’s house. Circle, the grave

A 34-year-old man, Arogundade Ahmed, has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly flogging his son to death.

According to eyewitnesses, Arogundade tortured his 13-year-old son, Qudus, to death because Qudus broke into someone’s house and attempted to steal.

Arogundade was said to have killed his son in the presence of his little sister, Sherifat.
We learnt that after killing the boy, Arogundade dug a grave and buried him in front of his house in Alogba Estate area of Ikorodu

Our correspondent, who visited the crime scene, learnt that the incident occurred on June 27, 2013.
It was leant that the deceased was an apprentice at a mechanic workshop in the area.

A senior police officer at Ipakodo Police Division, who craved anonymity, said, “We were told that on the said date, Qudus broke into the house of one Apoti Lateef and attempted to steal. Lateef raised the alarm, accosted the boy and then called his (Qudus) master, Idowu Gabriel.

“Gabriel and Lateef said they tied up the boy and then called his father to take him away.”
Our correspondent learnt that Arogundade took the boy home and then beat him up with barbwire, sticks and other objects for about five hours.

As the beating continued, Qudus started getting weak and later died.

According to eyewitnesses, on seeing that Qudus had given up the ghost, Arogundade called a grave digger to bury his corpse.

An eyewitness, Adekunle Adekoya, said that no one could intervene when Arogundade was beating up his son because Arogundade was a hot-tempered man.

He said, “He (Arogundade) is hot-tempered. When he brought his son home around 12pm, he beat him till about 5pm. The boy kept on screaming and we could do nothing to save him because we did not want his trouble.

“Some neighbours were also around at the time but no one wanted to interfere. After sometime, the boy just went unconscious. We did not know he was dead. It was when I saw a man digging a grave in front of Arogundade’s house around 7.30pm that I knew the worst had happened.

“I immediately called the Lagos State Emergency telephone number but no one came.”

The traditional leader of the community, Oludapo Sule, said he reported the matter to the police as well as members of the Oodua People’s Congress.

He said they were able to apprehend Arogundade at midnight.

He said, “I received an anonymous call on the day of the incident and the caller told me that a man had killed and buried his son in front of his house. I was able to meet with the landlords in the area, who confirmed the incident to me

“So, at midnight, he was picked up and taken to the police station. The matter has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba and I have written my statement.”

Sule however urged the police to ensure that Qudus’ corpse was exhumed and given proper burial.
Chairman, Alogba Estate and Palapo Town Community Development Association, Mr. Agboola Aluko, said Arogundade had been terrorising the community for quite some time.

He said Arogundade had inflicted machete cuts on Qudus before and had even threatened to kill members of the community.

He said, “Arogundade had beaten Qudus with a machete before and even almost killed his wife. That was why she divorced him. Even when he was being arrested, he threatened to deal with anyone who spoke against him.

“I have settled many disputes in this area caused by Arogundade. Even women in the area are scared of him. We have reported his bad behaviour to the police before.”
Arogundade, however, said he did not kill his son. He said his son was merely beaten after he was accosted for stealing.

The police statement on the incident read, “Upon his arrest, Arogundade said he did not kill his son. He said he (Qudus) was almost dead when Lateef and Gabriel handed him over. He said his son died soon after and then buried his corpse in front of his house and went to bed.

The police source said, “We have also arrested Lateef and Gabriel but they claimed they only tied up the boy and did not kill him. Investigations are ongoing.”

When contacted on the telephone, the spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said she would call back.

We’ll Not Support President Jonathan In 2015 –Northern Elders

Prof. Ango Abdullahi
Prof. Ango Abdullahi

The Northern Elders’ Forum on Monday said that the North would not support President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential election.

The spokesman for the group, Prof. Ango Abdullahi, stated this in an interview with one of our correspondents, while reacting to a statement by the Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, Babangida Aliyu.

Aliyu, had in Minna on Sunday, said the North would negotiate with candidates contesting the 2015 presidential election.

He denied saying only a northerner should emerge as President in 2015.
Abdullahi said, “My part of the North will not support him (Jonathan). The South owe us a moral debt and they should pay.

“They seem to be forgetting the moral debt they owe us. There is nothing personal against the person of President Goodluck Jonathan. There is something wrong with the system that threw him up against equity and justice.”

The NEF spokesman said that people should have the courage to acknowledge equity and justice.
He stated, “The Northern Elders Forum has no political party. This is something that you should remember. The various northern groups including the ACF (Arewa Consultative Forum) have no political party.

“What we have are political interests and it is on these political interests that we are going to direct our energies. At the moment our political interest, based on equity and justice rests with the North.

“When I say we will not support him, it is not because he is Jonathan or that he is Ijaw. What we are saying is that we will look at the issues at stake and throw our weight where there will be equity.”
Abdullahi said that the North had not been treated fairly.

According to him, the NEF has no political party or presidential candidate for now.
The NEF spokesman added that there were no contradictions in the comments made by Aliyu and his Jigawa State counterpart, Sule Lamido.

Lamido had in Dutse, the Jigawa State capital, said that the Peoples Democratic Party presidential ticket was not a guarantee that Jonathan would win the 2015 poll.

Abdullahi said, “There is no contradiction in the position of the North. If you read what Babangida Aliyu said correctly, he said the North will negotiate the Presidency in 2015.

“It does not foreclose the emergence of a northern candidate. I don’t know in what context (Sule) Lamido spoke but I know he knows what he is talking about.

“It is a fact that even when a candidate emerges on the platform of a party there is no guarantee that he will win the election in a free and fair contest.”

He recalled that the North supported zoning in 1999. This, he said, was to enable all parts of the country to have a sense of belonging.

Abdullahi said, “It was the Northern Elders Forum that supported the election of the President from the Southern part of the country, first for four years and secondly for another four years.

“We are not talking as if other parts of the country have no rights. We ceded our rights and supported their aspirations, and therefore, what we are saying is that for equity, fairness and balance, it is about time that there is a payback based on the kind of system so that people will not misunderstand us.”
The Presidency on Monday said Jonathan was ready to negotiate with the North and other zones in the country if he decided to contest the 2015 presidential election.

Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Dr. Ahmed Gulak, said this in an interview with one of our correspondents.

Gulak spoke in reaction to Aliyu’s comment on Sunday.

The presidential aide said that as far as Jonathan was concerned, politics was about extension of olive branches to all stakeholders and building bridges.

He said the President was favourably disposed to negotiating with any bloc or zone in order to move the nation forward.

Gulak said, “Politics is about power; it is about extending olive branches; it is about consultation and it is about building bridges.

“President Jonathan is ready and always willing to negotiate with any bloc or zone in order to move the nation forward.

“Politics is about discussing with stakeholders, all zones, all blocs and all states. He will do this should he decide to contest in 2015.”

Meanwhile, the ACF on Monday said the north was not insisting on a northern president in 2015.
The National Publicity Secretary of the ACF, Mr. Anthony Sani, who said this in an interview with one of our correspondents in Kaduna, said the North, like other regions, would contest the presidency in 2015.

Sani said that there was nothing wrong with the statement credited to Aliyu that the region was ready to negotiate the 2015 poll.

The ACF spokesman said that the zoning formula had been killed and buried by the 2011 elections.
Sani stated, “I think Governor Aliyu Babangida is not wrong precisely because politics of zoning has been killed and buried by the results of elections in 2011 when Nigerians voted against politics of zoning.

“Where that is the case, the North will be expected to canvass for the presidency like any other
sections of the country. In that case, there is nothing like North insisting on the presidency, but it will be left for dynamics of democracy to determine.”

The ACF’s spokesman said the South used annulment of June 12, 1993 election to morally blackmail the North into accepting zoning.

He stated, “When the time came for the turn of the North, then suddenly constitutionalism and politics of merit supplanted zoning. What is more? Nigerians voted against politics of zoning in 2011.

“As democrats, ACF and northern leaders accepted the judgment of Nigerians in accordance with democratic tenets which demand that majority has its say and way while minority only has its say.

“In proper democracy premised on triple foundation of liberty, justice and common decency, there cannot be insistence.”

Sani blamed the media for reporting that the North wanted power returned to it as a birth right.

According to eye witness, the boy and two of his friends visited the river around 2 p.m  on fishing expediction when the incident occurred. It was learnt that the boy armed with hook, thread and a stick was pull inside by a particular big fish inside the river.

On getting to the middle of the river, the boy got drowned and when his friends noticed it, they took to their heels, leaving Sikiru to his fate. But one Saheed Buhari of Dupe Aina Street behind Old Governor’s Office heard the boy crying for help and immediately raised alarm.

FG, Boko Haram To Sign Ceasefire Deal

The Federal Government on Monday announced it had “reached an understanding” with the militant Islamic sect, Boko Haram, which would lead to the signing of a ceasefire deal with the group.

Chairman, Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North, Alhaji Tanimu Turaki, said this while speaking on the Hausa Service of Radio France International on Monday.

Turaki, who is also the Minister of Special Duties, however, said the panel had not signed an agreement with the violent sect.

The amnesty panel boss “revelation” came a day to the commencement of the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan, expected to start on Tuesday (today).

In an interview with a national daily on Monday, Turaki said, “It is not an agreement; we have reached an understanding with the leadership of Boko Haram arising from weeks of discussion and interface that we have been having with them.

“We will now move to the issue of parameters for an agreement and then when we are able to agree on the terms, the signing (of the agreement) will be done openly and all members of the press will be invited.

“But for now, they have agreed in principle that they have declared a ceasefire which we commended as it will bring a way forward to solving the problem.

“A declaration has been made and we commend them for that and we see it as a right step in the right direction.”

Asked to clarify the meaning of “reaching an understanding”, the committee chairman said, “We have discussed. Infact, we have been discussing for quite some time now. They have directed their (Boko Haram) members to ceasefire largely for the discussion we have had with them, and largely for the commencement of the fasting of the month of Ramadan.
“Formal agreement will follow in due course.”

The Federal Government, had on April 4, set up the amnesty panel to work out ways of arresting the growing violence and killings in the North by the Boko Haram.

Part of the progress recorded by the committee was the recommendation that wives and children of Boko Haram members, who were detained by security agencies, be released unconditionally.
The committee had visited various prisons in the country, holding talks with detained sect’s leaders and members, some of who are currently facing trial.

The terms of reference of the committee are “to consider the feasibility or otherwise of granting pardon to the Boko Haram adherents,

“Collate clamours arising from different interest groups who want the apex government to administer clemency on members of the religious sect; and

“To recommend modalities for the granting of the pardon, should such step become the logical one to take under the prevailing circumstance.”

In May, the Federal Government declared a state of emergency in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states after the sect members carried out massive killings and bombings in Yobe and Borno states, including in Bama, where no fewer than 200 persons were reportredly killed.

Meanwhile, the government of Britain had disclosed plans to ban Boko Haram, a move that makes membership of or support for the organisation a criminal offence.

Britain’s Home Office said in a statement on Monday that Boko Haram would be added to its list of outlawed organisations, a roster of foreign and domestic terror groups that include al-Qaeda and the Irish Republican Army. The move is subject to parliamentary approval.

Nigerian Governors Are Importing Illegal Arms With Private Jets Ahead Of 2015 Elections

The panache of Nigerian governors to purchase private jets has been allegedly used to smuggle arms into the country without adequate inspection.
This was the bold revelation made by the Director General, National Task force on Illegal Importation of Light Weapons and Small Arms, Osita Okereke, on Channels Television breakfast programme, Sunrise Daily, where he stated that “they (governors) take private jets abroad, purchase arms and land in their state –no security man has right to search or search him because it is a governor’s item. You cannot stop, you cannot search them.”

Mr Okereke gave this remark over the availability of arms in Zamfara state which the state Governor plans to arm vigilante groups within the state, to address its insecurity.

According to Mr Okereke, the revelation from Zamfara is just the one we (the public) know. There are many governors with so many arms in this country that the numbers of arms they are having is ‘uncountable’.“There are so many of them in various states. These governors have brought in arms that are uncountable” he affirmed. He further revealed that “we have marked so many states” but however failed to mention any of such state, saying “it is a security matter.”

He traced the plethora of arms to Governors who according to Mr Okereke, armed hoodlums with the guns.“There are millions of arms in Nigeria” he said, adding that they (Governors) are already arming ahead of 2015 general elections.

He appealed that the government should provide the task force on Illegal Importation of Light Weapons and Small Arms, with Police, Army and budgeted funds because “we have informants all over the place and we need to pay them.”

"Nike (Oshinowo) will return to me" - ex-husband Tunde Soleye says

The multimillionaire medical doctor and businessman, whose marriage to former beauty queen and socialite Nike Oshinowo ended in 2012, tells Sunday Newswatch
"Adenike still remains the love of my life. I love her very much. We have been separated now for over a year but we still keep in touch. We even sometimes go out for dinner. Marriages go though their challenges. Nike got married at 41 years old so she has her ways but the things that separated us really are not irreparable. I have seen couples that broke up and made up after 35 years. Mr and Mrs Cardoso, Terry Wayas and Eno Olafisoye had about five, six years separation and they are back together. Health: Why Some Women Don’t Have Enough Breast Milk For Baby

breast feed Why do so many mothers have difficulty making enough milk to breastfeed? A new study by scientists at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Centre and the University of California Davis adds to their previous research implicating insulin’s role in lactation success.
The study is the first to describe how the human mammary gland becomes highly sensitive to insulin during lactation. It is also the first study to get an accurate picture of how specific genes are switched on in the human mammary gland during lactation.
The researchers used next generation sequencing technology, RNA sequencing, to reveal “in exquisite detail” the blueprint for making milk in the human mammary gland, according to Laurie Nommsen-Rivers, PhD, RD, IBCLC, a scientist at Cincinnati Children’s and corresponding author of the study, published online in PLOS ONE, a journal of the Public Library of Science.
Nommsen-Rivers’ previous research had shown that for mothers with markers of sub-optimal glucose metabolism, such as being overweight, being at an advanced maternal age, or having a large birth-weight baby, it takes longer for their milk to come in, suggesting a role for insulin in the mammary gland. The new research shows how the mammary gland becomes sensitive to insulin during lactation.
For a long time, insulin was not thought to play a direct role in regulating the milk-making cells of the human breast, because insulin is not needed for these cells to take in sugars, such as glucose. Scientists now, however, appreciate that insulin does more than facilitate uptake of sugars.
“This new study shows a dramatic switching-on of the insulin receptor and its downstream signals during the breast’s transition to a bio factory that manufactures massive amounts of proteins, fats and carbohydrates for nourishing the newborn baby,” says Dr. Nommsen-Rivers.
“Considering that 20 per cent of women between 20 and 44 years old are pre-diabetic, it’s conceivable that up to 20 per cent of new mothers in the United States are at risk for low milk supply due to insulin dysregulation.”
Dr. Nommsen-Rivers and her colleagues were able to use a non-invasive method to capture mammary gland RNA — a chain of molecules that are blueprints for making specified proteins — in samples of human breast milk. They then created the first publicly accessible library of genes expressed in the mammary gland based on RNA-sequencing technology.
This approach revealed a highly sensitive portrait of the genes being expressed in human milk-making cells. They discovered an orchestrated switching on and off of various genes as the mammary gland transitions from secreting small amounts of immunity-boosting colostrum in the first days after giving birth to the copious production of milk in mature lactation.
In particular, the PTPRF gene, which is known to suppress intracellular signals that are usually triggered by insulin binding to its receptor on the cell surface, may serve as a biomarker linking insulin resistance with insufficient milk supply. These results lay the foundation for future research focused on the physiological contributors to mothers’ milk supply difficulties.
Now that they’ve demonstrated the significance of insulin signalling in the human mammary gland, they are planning a phase I/II clinical trial with a drug used to control blood sugar in type 2 diabetes to determine whether it improves insulin action in the mammary gland, thus improving milk supply. While a drug is not an ideal way to solve the problem of sub-optimal glucose metabolism impairing breastfeeding, according to Dr. Nommsen-Rivers, it is excellent for establishing proof-of-concept through the use of a placebo controlled randomized clinical trial.
“The ideal approach is a preventive one,” she says. “Modifications in diet and exercise are more powerful than any drug. After this clinical trial, we hope to study those interventions.”

Some gunmen stormed a hotel in Ajah area of Lagos State on Sunday, 04 Hotel, killing the owner, identified as Olanrewaju Subair, and three others.

The police authorities said one of the gunmen was killed in the operation which lasted for about an hour.

However, two people died from a fire outbreak that was caused by intense shooting in the hotel.
It was learnt that several people were injured.

Our correspondent, who visited the area, observed heavy security as policemen, attached to Rapid Response Squad, were seen patrolling the area.

All attempts by our correspondent to enter the hotel proved abortive as policemen attached to
MOPOL 10, Bauchi, prevented him from going in on the grounds that investigations were ongoing.
A source, who craved anonymity, told our correspondent that there was a fire at the hotel shortly after the shooting.

He said, “The gunmen came for Subair but ended up shooting others in the process. They killed his girlfriend who was with him and then killed two other people. They then shot two others but those ones did not die.

“The shooting caused fire and two customers, who were in another room, were burnt to death. The fire continued to rage so we had no choice but to call on the fire service.”

The Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Razaq Fadipe, told our correspondent on the telephone, that his men were able to put out the fire. He also confirmed the death toll.

“We received the distress call around 7am on Sunday that there was a fire. On getting there, we were able to put it out but two people were burnt ,” he said.

It was learnt that the matter was reported at the Area J Command but was later transferred to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Ikeja.

A police source, who craved anonymity, said the gunmen were probably robbers that were on a revenge mission.

“A notorious armed robber was arrested at the same hotel sometime ago. We are working on the assumption that it was members of his gang that came to the hotel to carry out a revenge mission,” a source said.

The spokesperson for the state police command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the attack to our correspondent on the telephone.

Braide said she could not say the casualty figure but confirmed the murder of Subair.
She however said the police were able to kill one of the culprits.

She said, “The Special Anti-Robbery Squad had raided the hotel sometime ago and had arrested the
leader of the robbery gang as well as two members of the gang. The gang members at large stormed the hotel and shot the owner and some of his employees.

“The robbers told the customers at the hotel that they came on reprisals however one of the employees was able to call the police and on sighting the policemen, the robbers opened fire. The policemen shot back and one of the robbers was killed. An AK47 rifle was recovered from the robber.”

Braide said the police high command was interested in the case and the culprits would soon be brought to book.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Umar manko, has vowed that the robbers will be arrested.”

Wenger raises eyebrows with Suarez enquiry as Arsenal desperately look for attacking firepower

Arsenal have raised a few eyebrows after making an ambitious enquiry for Liverpool’s Luis Suarez.

Manager Arsene Wenger has been rebuffed in a similar enquiry for Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney and has a bid on the table for Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain.

Bookmakers stopped taking bets on a Suarez moving to Arsenal last week after a flood of activity.

Targets: There is an offer on the table for Higuain (left), while a move for Rooney (right) looks unlikely
However, Liverpool have yet to receive any bids and maintain Suarez will have to ask for a transfer if he wishes to leave.
They are expected to speak further with their 26-year-old player of the year this week. He has been quoted widely in Uruguayan and Spanish media about his need to leave England and Real Madrid are still considered the most likely to make a bid.
Chelsea were linked with a move last week in Spanish media but they are pursuing other targets.

A move within England is considered unlikely for Suarez, not withstanding the fact he has to serve the rest of his 10 game ban for biting Branislav Ivanovic, and Arsenal's on-going pursuit of Gonzalo Higuain suggests they believe the player would prefer a move to Spain.
Higuain has started pre-season training at Madrid and the club have demanded £27m for the Argentine from Arsenal so they can pay Real Sociedad for Asier Illaremendi.

At last! The moment Andy Murray ended Britain's 77-year Wimbledon wait

Good God, what must have been going through his mind?

It was 11 minutes past five when Andy Murray sat by the side of Centre Court and placed a towel
around his heaving shoulders. His body ached, his head throbbed. Focus, focus. He was one game, one service game, from home.

The sound of his name, chanted by 16,000 voices and more outside the arena, filled the heavy air. This was his trophy to lose now. History was his to make, or break. Murray was no longer dealing with 77 years of hope, but one crystallised moment of overwhelming expectation. Not just theirs, but his.

There was more than a prize to lose now. There was his sanity. To stand so close, within touching distance, and to have that treasure denied. How could he, would he, recover from that? He concentrated his thoughts instead on minutiae. Went back to basics.
He honed in on where he wanted his first serve to land, cleared all but the technical details from his head. He was four serves away from Eden. If he placed them right, the rest would take care of itself.
Novak Djokovic was up, on the balls of his feet, and waiting. The fever built, a noise never heard on Centre Court. A frenzy of longing, delirious, fit to burst.
Murray walked to his spot. The same spot he had occupied dozens of times that afternoon. Bounce, bounce, bounce, glance up, bounce, bounce, bounce. The people within the arena were silent now, tense, primed to explode, relying on one man to trigger their wildest dreams. Wind up, ready and, serve. He would do that three times.

On each occasion the point fell in his favour. Forty love. He was, potentially, one shot away. One golden shot.
Around Centre Court, anticipation, like the thermometer mercury, had risen off the scale. At 1.50pm, the heat in the direct sun stood at 49.8 degrees, making this the hottest final since Bjorn Borg defeated Ilie Nastase in 1976. It was cooler now, in the late afternoon, but stickier, clammy in other ways.
Everyone was sweating, Murray through the exertion of combat, the onlookers overcome by the stress of having hit every shot in their imaginations. There were false cries of ‘out’ midway through rallies, groans if a first serve struck the net.
They had lived it with him, every moment, and now they were going to capture the image for posterity. These people had the most valuable tickets in the history of British sport — exchanges claimed £70,000 a pair, although that sounds far-fetched — yet they were content to watch its climatic moment through the tiny window of a smartphone camera. Thousands of them, all pointed at Murray, ready to record the confident finishing flourish of a champion. He would dispatch Djokovic, the mighty Djokovic, to love for the crown.
It was not as simple as that. Nothing is as simple as that. How could it be, in these meetings of supermen? So Murray did not serve it out. Not then. The cameras captured only his struggle, a teeter on the brink of implosion. Three times, he tried to hit that perfect mark, and three times Djokovic was more than equal to his challenge. Deuce. Panic. Now it felt different, Murray recalled later.

The aura of calm had departed. His mind was racing. Dark thoughts crowded in. Suppose this was not his time, after all? Suppose this was not his destiny. Suppose his legacy was darker, torturous, a stain? The man who blew three match points at Wimbledon. The man who, given the chance to calm the restless spirit of Fred Perry, choked.
Djokovic was a fighter. Djokovic was notorious for his resilience, his determination, for sheer bloody mindedness in battle. His comebacks were legendary, so too his feats of athleticism. And there he stood, waiting to receive. Advantage Djokovic. Deuce. Advantage Djokovic. Deuce. Advantage Djokovic. Deuce. Advantage Murray.
Game.
Murray.
It was a blur, he said. A blank. He could not remember the shot Djokovic played — a simple backhand return, into the net — and the precise placement of the serve deserted him, too. He celebrated, he screamed in release and delight, but the overwhelming emotion was disbelief.

Murray staggered, suddenly numb. He fell to his knees. He made his way up to his friends, colleagues and family — the famous Team Murray that have stood by him throughout. Yet that emotional journey is almost expected of champions these days. Marion Bartoli had climbed on to the same roof on winning the women’s title the day before. Murray was in such a trance, he almost forget his mum, Judy.
The first hug went to Ivan Lendl. Murray said there was no pecking order, but it was strangely appropriate. The arrival of Murray the winner coincides with that of Lendl the coach. The desire was always there, but Lendl has given his man the steel to turn talent into achievement.
‘Ideally, he would have won it himself,’ Murray deadpanned, ‘but I think this was the next best thing for him.’
It was almost refreshing to hear that dour monotone when it came time to share his thoughts with Sue Barker and Centre Court. It would not have felt right for Murray to become squealing and emotional. Those who do not know him mistake his flatness of speech for absence of personality. He is nothing like that image, really. He is warm, friendly and accommodating, with a dry sense of humour and far more personable than his detractors imagine.

Writing the history books: Andy Murray is the first Brit to lift the Wimbledon men's trophy since 1936
More than ever, at this Wimbledon, the crowd has warmed to him, and this is the first time the silence has not been broken by an infantile cry of ‘Come on, Tim’ as Murray prepares to serve. There were a few whose excitement got the better of them, but these were spontaneous and genuine eruptions of excitement and support, not some childish little gag at Murray’s expense. Really, you would rather it were Tim Henman on Centre Court, sir? Sadly, he wasn’t in Murray’s class. Nobody from here has been; probably not even Fred Perry, given the different levels of athleticism and pressure of the two eras. Perry did not have 77 years of anguish to extinguish either. When he first won Wimbledon in 1934, the previous British champion was from 20 tournaments ago, not a lifetime.
Murray has never whined about the pressure of Wimbledon fortnight, perhaps believing it would give him an excuse to fail, but the trophy safely stashed, he could expose his true feelings.

‘It’s been hard,’ he said. ‘Really hard. For the last four or five years, it’s been very, very tough, very stressful, and a lot of pressure. The few days before the tournament are really difficult and the last two days are never easy. It’s everywhere you go. It’s so hard to avoid everything because of how big this event is, and also the history and no British player having won for so long.
‘I didn’t always feel it was going to happen. It’s incredibly difficult to win these events and I don’t think that’s that well understood sometimes. It takes so much hard work, so much mental toughness, to win these tournaments. A couple years ago when I lost in the semi-finals to Rafa Nadal, I was up a set, maybe a break as well, or had break points at least, and didn’t get through. That was a tough one. It should get easier from here. I hope it will. Mentally, that last game will be the toughest I’ll play in my career, ever.’

The monkey is off his back now. Two monkeys really. The first was to win a Grand Slam, which he did at the US Open last year. The next was to win his home Slam and, in doing so, bring to an end the constant humiliation of having no British champion since Stanley Baldwin was Prime Minister. To be ‘the first Brit to ever win this tournament in shorts,’ as Murray was called by one American observer.
Yet there was even more to it than that. Murray has long been on a mission to alter public perceptions of his home town, Dunblane, in Scotland. He wanted it to be remembered for producing Britain’s finest tennis player, rather than a shooting tragedy at a school that claimed many of his young friends, and was lucky not to have taken him. When Murray looks to the skies after matches, it has been speculated this is an act of remembrance, and thanks. Dunblane is Murray Town now. He can never erase that history, but he has obscured it.
So in that context, Murray’s victory on Sunday had one final layer, which maybe he has not realised yet. It happened on July 7. The day that extremists attacked London’s public transport system in 2005. Might 7/7 now also become the anniversary of a Briton finally winning Wimbledon? Such a happy thought. Murray would like that.
