Tope Alabi accused of sexual harrassment by spiritual father Prophet Ajanaku

Things are not currently looking good between gospel singer, Tope Alabi and her spiritual father, Prophet Iretiola Ajanaku.

Prophet Ajanaku was alleged to have opened a can of worms where he accused the singer of wanting to have a sexual relationship with him.

Below is what was said by the man of God who claimed that his problem with the Yoruba gospel singer started because of his refusal to have sex with her......  Read more after the cut

On his relationship with Tope Alabi;
She actually met me 11 years ago when she came to church crying that since she was married she had no child. I told her that by the grace of God when we shall be holding another anniversary she will come and dedicate her child before God. I have pictures of the child dedication, I christened the child Deborah.

There are many things concerning her and the husband that I will never tell anyone, never ever. If she had not said that she met me only six years ago, I would not have called you to show all these pictures. And if I say what God has used me to do in their lives, with proofs and medical test records in their hands, they will be ashamed of themselves.

On what really happened;

I'm wondering if she's being foolish or just stupid. I remember when she was putting pressure on me to have sex with her. She did not hide her urge to have sexual relationship with me. At a point she could not control her urge to do that but I declined, I said never, not me. Ask these people here (in chorus, the members seated confirmed his claim).

Eucharia Anunobi explains why she's no longer on the social scene

"Eucharia, why have you not been seen much lately? On the pages of newspapers, magazines, events and so on?" The actress and evangelist asked herself on Facebook yesterday. Below is her answer...
I actually thought about the best way to handle the question, so as not to sound proud or immodest, and these were my honest answers.
Ma’am, thanks for looking out for me, but let me state categorically, that I Eucharia Anunobi, now Evangelist, have moved from the things don’t matter, to the thing that matters more, which is the work of my Father, who created me and made me an instant STAR, when I least expected it in my life.
I would never want to be remembered as someone who graced all the front pages of all the Newspapers and News Magazines in the world and did not contribute to the leading of people towards heaven.

Of a truth, you will agree with me that the job that will be rewarded by God Himself is that of SOUL-WINNING?

So, why waste my fame, money, life, face, time, speaking ability to do the things that will never be rewarded?

I would never wish to be remembered as one lady who covered or graced all the front-pages, or a fashionistar, or a fashion icon, or one with the best gown at the red carpet event, designed and clothed by the best hands in the world, with the best hair-style or make-up.

Surely, these things are good and beautiful, but they will never earn anyone a single mark before the presence of God.

The content of my character and my contributions to humanity through the preaching of God’s Word (for which I was originally created for) are what I wish to speak for me when my accounts and records are opened in heaven.

And I would love to hear that sweet word from the throne of grace saying, welcome my faithful servant, enter into the rest prepared for you.

Then, my joy will be full while others continue to relish the pleasures of this world.

Constitution Amendment: Presidents, Governors To Lose Immunity

govs n gej

Public officeholders who hide behind the immunity clause to steal will soon be licking their wounds, as the House of Representatives is set to withdraw the contentious clause from the constitution.

This is one of the recommendations contained in the report of the House of Representatives ad-hoc Committee on Review of the 1999 Constitution which is scheduled to be laid on the floor of the House today.

Among other things, we gathered from a member of the committee who craved anonymity since the report has not been debated by the House, that the report also recommended, despite variance with the Senate, that two terms be maintained, with a four-year span for political officeholders including the president and his deputy.

On local government, the special committee headed by the deputy speaker of the House, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, asked that a definite uniform tenure be provided for all local government officeholders in line with the request of the Nigerian public.

The committee had, last November, nationwide people’s public sessions held in all constituencies to collect input of the public on constitution amendment, the results of which were announced in a public presentation at the National Assembly earlier this year.

Key elements in the template used for the opinion gathering exercise include the granting of full autonomy, including financial autonomy, to local government administrations and removal of immunity against prosecution from the president, vice president, governors and their deputies, , particularly as ıt relates to criminal offences.

Others include rotation of the office of the president, scrapping of state independent electoral commissions (SIECs), state creation, state police as well as autonomy to state legislatures. [Leadership]

Police Parade Gay Pastor For Alleged Rape Of Church Member

The Alleged Gay Pastor
The Alleged Gay Pastor

The Edo State Police Command, yesterday, paraded 26 suspected criminals including a pastor identified as Philips Ogbebor, alleged to have had carnal knowledge of a 20-year-old male member of his church (names withheld).

After the act, the pastor allegedly threatened to kill his victim if he disclosed the act to the public.
While speaking to us, Pastor Ogbebor simply said: “God will judge, go and talk to others” and kept on mumbling.

But his victim narrated his ordeal: “I told him I have never done this since I grew up, but he insisted. It was painful and I told him I will not allow it again. So after the second attempt, I told him I will expose the act. He then administered an oath on me, saying if I ever told any one, I will die.

“He carried sand and olive oil and poured them on my head, then he wore black garment, saying I will die if I ever leaked the secret. He killed a black fowl and gave me the liver and gizzard to eat at about 2 a.m., threatening that if I ever said it out, I will die like the fowl.

“But when I realised that it is a sin, I met a man of God to pray for me that God should forgive me and that I am ready to expose it since he forced me. There after I went to the church and told the congregation about the act. When he heard it, he threatened me by sending his younger brother and members of his gang after me. Since then I have been running.”
Other suspects paraded

The state Police Commissioner, Folusho Adebanjo, explained that among the suspects were two suspected cultists believed to have participated in the recent rival cult clash in the state and seven suspected pipeline vandals and operators of illegal refineries.

Others were two suspected robbers, from whom a Toyota Camry car they stole at gunpoint in Kaduna State was recovered; a suspect who was alleged to have demanded N20 million ransom from one Joseph with death threats and three others whom the police boss said were in possession of firearms without licence were also paraded.

There was also an alleged case of rape against two suspects who were said to have dragged a 20-year-old female victim into the bush. He also paraded five persons including a middle aged woman all from Ojah, Akoko-Edo Local Government council accused of burning to death, one Funmi Abiodun on allegation of being a witch responsible for the death of a relation.

According to him, “the war against criminality is relentlessly being waged against men of the underworld. The command is not leaving any stone unturned regarding crime and criminality in Edo State.

“This man who claimed to be a pastor defiled a young person. Another thing that is so common here and I don’t know why this defilement issue is so prevalent.

“I wonder if there is something about it. You see very old men defiling young girls who are five years, two years, and so on. We are not going to tolerate this and cases of rape are also increasing too but we will go all out to make sure that they are convicted.”

President Goodluck Jonathan
President Goodluck Jonathan

The products displayed included cassava cake, beverages and textile products.

Customs Official Accused Of Killing 30yr Old Car Dealer

Uririnke-360x225

The Lagos State Police Command has commenced investigations into the murder of a 30-year-old car dealer, Uririnke Onojorhoevwo, who was allegedly killed by officials of the Nigerian Customs Service in Iyana Ipaja area of the state.

According to the police, the Delta State indigene was shot to death on June 16, 2013, after being pursued by customs men attached to the Federal Operation Unit.

Some policemen attached to Gowon Police Division, who witnessed the incident, said after the killing, the customs men fled.

A policeman, who craved anonymity, said, “On June 16, around 5am, we saw customs men in a Toyota Hilux van with registration number, CS307A01, chasing a white unregistered Audi Station wagon. The customs men shot the tyre of the vehicle and also shot its driver.

“The driver, who was bleeding profusely, came out of the vehicle and attempted to run. One of the customs men alighted from the Hilux, moved close to the car dealer, and shot him again. They did not touch the corpse but entered into their vehicle and fled immediately.”

The police source told PUNCH Metro that policemen later recovered the corpse and took it to the station.

When asked if the deceased was a smuggler, the policeman said there was no evidence to prove that he was.

He said, “After the killing, we began preliminary investigation. We thought he was a smuggler but we decided to search the vehicle. We discovered that all the relevant documents were intact including the customs duty.

“We also deduced that the deceased was driving from Idi-Iroko border and was heading towards Lagos.”

Our correspondent learnt that the matter had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba, for further investigation.

A source at the Homicide Department at the SCID, told our correspondent that all attempts to get information from the NCS proved abortive as it did not respond to a letter written to it.

The source said, “We wrote a letter to customs two weeks ago. We even made telephone calls to their administration department, but they have not been forthcoming.”

The elder brother of the deceased, Bakapo Onojorhoevwo, told PUNCH Metro that the deceased sold vehicles for a living.

He said the deceased was based in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and was probably heading towards there when he was killed.

He said he was pained that his brother was not married and had no children. He said the family would like to know what transpired.

He said, “Around 7.30am on that very day, I called my brother’s telephone but a policeman picked it up and told me that my brother was involved in an accident and I should come to Mainland Medical Centre, Yaba. I went there with my younger sister and we were told that my brother had been killed by customs men.

“His corpse is still there and we are waiting for autopsy. My brother has been dealing in cars for the past four years. We do not know what actually happened so we want the customs to explain to us.”
When contacted on the telephone, Public Relations Officer, Federal Operations Unit, Zone A of the NCS, Mr. Uche Ejesieme, said investigations were ongoing.

A text message he sent to our correspondent read, “We are on top of the situation. Necessary and appropriate steps will be taken in due course.” [Punch]

Egypt Army Overthrows President Morsi

Ousted President Morsi

Egypt’s military deposed the country’s first democratically elected President, Mohamed Mursi, Wednesday night after he failed to meet demands to share power with opponents, who thronged the streets of Cairo, state-run media reported.

Troops moved into key positions around the capital and surrounded a demonstration by Mursi’s supporters in a Cairo suburb as a 48-hour ultimatum from the generals expired.

Citing an unnamed presidential source, the state-run newspaper, Al-Ahram, reported that “the General Command of the Armed Forces told President Mursi around 7pm. that he is no longer a president for the republic.”

The state-run Middle East News Agency reported Wednesday night that leaders of the country’s Muslim and Christian communities would join military leaders and opposition figures to lay out an agreement “to exit the current political crisis.”

The report came shortly after a deadline issued by the generals to Egypt’s first democratically elected leader expired. At the final hour, Mursi offered to form an interim coalition government “that would manage the upcoming parliamentary electoral process, and the formation of an independent committee for constitutional amendments to submit to the upcoming parliament,” Mursi said in a posting on his Facebook page.

He noted that hundreds of thousands of supporters and protesters had packed plazas around the country, and he urged that his countrymen be allowed to express their opinions through the ballot box.

“One of the mistakes I cannot accept — as the president of all Egyptians — is to side with one party over another, or to present the scene from one side only. To be fair, we need to listen to the voice of people in all squares,” the statement read.

But as night fell Wednesday, Egyptian troops were taking control of key points around the capital and surrounded a pro-Mursi demonstration at a Cairo mosque. Gehad El-Haddad, a spokesman for the Muslim Brotherhood, reported via Twitter that tanks were on the streets.

Mursi was said to be working from a complex belonging to the country’s Republican Guard, across the street from the presidential palace, according to Egyptian state media. Reuters reported that troops were setting up barricades around that facility.

In Washington, State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the US government – Egypt’s leading ally – could not confirm reports of a coup. Psaki said the US was not taking sides and urged all parties to come to a peaceful resolution to the “tense and fast-moving” situation.

An aide, Essam El Haddad, said in a Facebook posting that a coup was under way and warned that the generals risked bloodshed by moving against Mursi.

“Today, only one thing matters. In this day and age, no military coup can succeed in the face of sizable popular force without considerable bloodshed,” wrote El Haddad, who works in the office of the Assistant to the President on Foreign Relations. “Who among you is ready to shoulder that blame?

“In a democracy, there are simple consequences for the situation we see in Egypt: The president loses the next election or his party gets penalised in the upcoming parliamentary elections. Anything else is mob rule,” he added.

But Naguib Abadeer, a member of the opposition Free Egyptians Party, said what was under way “is not by any means a military coup. This is a revolution.”

“The people have decided that Mursi was no longer the legitimate leader of Egypt,” he told CNN.
Abadeer said Mursi lost his legitimacy in November, when he declared courts could not review his decrees and ousted the country’s prosecutor-general. He said Mursi’s supporters in the Muslim Brotherhood – the Islamist movement that propelled Mursi to the presidency – “hijacked the vote of the people” by running on a religious platform, “so these were not democratic elections.”

Mursi had vowed Tuesday night that he would not comply with the military’s 48-hour ultimatum and demanded that the armed forces stand down.

“If the price of upholding this legitimacy is my own blood, I am, therefore, ready to sacrifice my blood for this country and its stability,” he said.

But political analyst Hisham Kassem said the speech was Mursi’s “final bluff.”

“He was trying to give the impression ‘We are there in numbers, and we are going to retaliate, we are not going to allow this to happen.’ However, with almost 24 hours since his message, it’s clear his supporters will not dare challenge the crowds on the street,” Kassem said.

He added, “I think President Mursi effectively is no longer running the country.” And faced with the throngs that filled Cairo’s Tahrir Square, “the military had to intervene. Otherwise this crowd was going to get Mursi from his palace.”

Reuters and several other news organisations reported that Egyptian troops had “secured the central Cairo studios of state television” as the deadline approached and that staff not working on live shows had departed.

CNN has not confirmed the reports; state television denied in an on-air banner that there was any additional military presence at its studios.

Massive demonstrations for and against the former Muslim Brotherhood leader who was elected to office a year ago, have been largely peaceful.

But 23 people died, health officials said, and hundreds more were injured in clashes overnight at Cairo University, the state-funded Al-Ahram news agency reported.
Protest leaders have called for non-violence.

Egypt’s military met Wednesday with religious, national, political and youth leaders to address the crisis, Egyptian military spokesman Ahmed Ali said through his Facebook page.

Hours earlier, an opposition spokesman accused the United States of propping up Mursi out of concern for neighboring Israel.

“The hour of victory is coming,” said Mahmoud Badr of the Tamarod opposition group. He predicted that the “illegitimate president” would be gone by the end of the day.

“Not America, not Mursi, not anyone can impose their will on the Egyptian people,” Badr said.
With the ultimatum, the armed forces appeared to have thrown their weight behind those opposed to Mursi’s Islamic government.

Early Wednesday, soldiers and police set up a perimeter around the opposition’s central meeting point, Cairo’s Tahrir Square, “to secure it from any possible attack,” the state-run EgyNews agency reported.

It was the police who, on the same spot in 2011, killed hundreds when they fired upon democratic, moderate and Islamic demonstrators seeking to overthrow Hosni Mubarak, the country’s longtime autocratic leader and US ally.

Mubarak had repressed the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamic political movement, that emerged as the nation’s most powerful political force once Mubarak was ousted.

At a pro-democracy protest in Cairo, demonstrators expressed anger and fear over what the coming hours could bring.

The Muslim Brotherhood spokesman, Gehad El-Haddad, told CNN that tanks and armored vehicles – accompanied by thugs carrying knives, pistols and ammunition – had been moved to the northern and southern entrances of the square in an apparent attempt to drive them out.

The military fired warning shots into the air, and shot one Muslim Brotherhood member in the leg, El-Haddad said, but the remaining protesters were standing in defiance in front of the tanks.

Some of the protesters oppose Mursi but also oppose pushing from power a democratically elected leader, he said. “Under no circumstances will we ever accept a military-backed coup,” he said.

Man Beheads Friend For Money Ritual In Ondo

Men of the Ondo State Crime Investigation Bureau, SCIB, have arrested a 25-year-old commercial motorcycle rider identified as Wasiu, for allegedly beheading his friend, Joshua Fadeyi, 22, for money making ritual.

Wasiu was arrested and taken to Oke-Igbo Police Station, and was later transferred to SCIB, Akure for proper investigation. He allegedly confessed at the SCIB that a herbalist asked him to bring a human head for money making ritual.

Narrating the incident, Joshua’s uncle, Mr. Ademola Fadeyi, said they both came to his house on that fateful morning, ate and left at about 10am to drink palm wine at Oloruntade. He said after they took the drink, they went to Samuel, one of their friends’ house, at about 6pm, where Wasiu perpetrated the evil act.

According to him, Samuel returned home after Wasiu had killed Joshua and had cut off his head with cutlass. He said a scuffle ensued between Samuel and Wasiu and Wasiu tore Samuel’s clothes and escaped to a neighbouring village to evade arrest. He was later arrested a few days later at Epe village in Ondo by commercial motorcycle riders who were on his trail after the incident happened as he was about to buy cigarette.

The late Joshua’s uncle accused the SCIB of trying to cover up the matter, adding that what the family want is justice. He pleaded with the police to release his corpse which is currently at the General Hospital, Ondo Town, to the family for burial. When a call was put through to the DPO of Oke-Igbo Police Station, Akure, to seek clarification on the issue, he said: “when the guy was apprehended, the mob wanted to kill him. But when I intervened, they descended on my car and damaged it.

“Well, the matter is no more at my police station. We did not take any statement from him when he was here. He has been transferred to SCIB. You can get all the information you need from the Ondo State PPRO,” he said. [Pm News]

Why Insecurity Thrives In The North – Islamic Scholars

Baga-pix2-600x400

Muslim leaders in the North yesterday blamed the insecurity in the region on lack of sound knowledge, effective leadership and social irresponsibility.
They appealed to members of the Boko Haram sect to accept the amnesty offer.

In a communiqué at the end of a conference on the role of Muslim scholars in fostering unity, peace and security organised by the Jama’atu Nasril Islam (JNI), they blamed government for not prosecuting those found to have perpetrated violence in the country.

The communiqué, signed by the Chairman of the Communique Drafting Committee, Prof. S. Junaidu and the Secretary-General of JNI, Dr. Khalid Abubakar Aliyu, condemned the increasing cases of corruption in the country, urging the government to address the issues.

The communiqué reads: “The prevailing security challenges are partly as a result of the individual and collective inability of the Ulama to stand up to their responsibility in terms of teaching and disseminating sound knowledge and giving effective leadership.

“That government’s refusal to institute judicial process of inquiry or prosecution as the case may be, against people arrested and are accused of perpetrating violence is an abdication of cardinal leadership responsibility that smacks of insensitivity in governance.

“That since unity of Muslims is a cardinal obligation, the Conference implored the scholars to uphold, foster and promote it and that scholars must stand up to their rightful position as heirs of the Prophet to shun vices and tread the path of piety and righteousness in order to discharge their obligation of guiding the Ummah duly and effectively, especially as it pertains to the issue of unity.”

It added that Muslim scholars must uphold the principle of mutual fairness, clemency, tolerance, love and respect towards one another to promote unity.

It said since national security was a necessity for all and sundry, every Nigerian must take the sustenance of peace and tranquility as a duty.

The leaders observed that Muslim scholars should buckle up in their efforts at educating the general public on the tenets of Islam, inculcating moral uprightness, and in providing effective community-based leadership and social responsibility.

They added: “That the lessons of the life and times of the Sokoto Caliphate leaders and the rich intellectual legacy they left behind pertaining to unity, peace and security must be studied explored and utilized for the purpose of engendering and promoting harmonious co-existence in the country.

“That leaders should stop patronising rapacious and pseudo scholars, if at all they have sincerity of purpose in governance.

“That as evidence of good governance, government at all levels should lead in fighting the endemic corruption in the country by strictly upholding the rule of law against the perpetrators and promoters of that national scourge.

“That the three tiers of governments in the country should be alive to their responsibilities by facilitating conducive economic atmosphere for youth employment and by providing social amenities and infrastructural facilities as a guarantee for people’s welfare and comfort.

“That government should protect the rights of its people with a great sense of equity and justice to all for the purpose of entrenching peaceful coexistence and inter-religious harmony in the country according to Nigerian law. In any case, the rule of law must be upheld and respected.

“That the government can curtail youthful restiveness only by addressing the problems of unemployment, drug abuse, sexual perversion, indiscipline and undue radicalization of any type.”

They called for the trial of anybody found culpable of perpetrating violence and aggression against peace loving Nigerians .

It urged the insurgents to tread the path of peace and accept the dialogue as offered by the Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of the Security Challenges in the North.

“That to promote sound knowledge and moral and character training among the youth, the government must make religious education compulsory in the education system, especially at the primary and secondary levels,” it said.

NUPENG Suspends Strike

image

The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) on Tuesday night called off its three-day warning strike after a meeting with the Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Andrew Yakubu.

Announcing the suspension of the strike during a news conference, the NUPENG President, Achese Igwe said the decision to end the industrial action was for the interest of the public and the intervention of Mr Yakubu.

Mr Igwe listed the major issues which had led to the warning strike to include the high level of insecurity in Nigeria, bad state of the roads, rising oil theft in the Niger Delta, non-adherence to guidelines on contract staffing/casualisation in the sector and abuse of expatriate quota.

NUPENG on Monday directed all its members at the depots to stop loading petroleum products for the next three days to protest the alleged inhuman treatment of its members by the management of Chevron, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) and Agip Oil Company.

The strike was also called to protest the refusal of Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) to implement the signed collective bargaining agreement with petroleum tanker drivers.Mr Igwe said if these issues are not quickly resolved, the union will not give further notice to the government before embarking on an indefinite strike.

The NNPC boss pleaded with the management of the three oil companies to rectify the employment status of casual tanker drivers in their organisations.

Coup D'Etat In Egypt: Military Removes President Morsi And Suspends The Constitution

Hundreds of thousands mobilized across the nation to both protest and
defended Mohamed Morsi - Image credit: AFP/Getty Images via @daylife
Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi has been effectively overthrown by
the military on Wednesday.  In a statement by Army chief General Abdel
Fattah al-Sisi, the armed forces explained that President Morsi had
ignored calls of the people, and the armed forces for reconciliation,
and that it was suspending the constitution and calling for early
elections.  Massive crowds gathered in Tahrir Square reveled in
jubilation, while doubts remain over what the Muslim Brotherhood's
supporters, who back deposed President Morsi, will do.
The move was preceded by the mass mobilization of armed vehicles
around Cairo, particularly to areas of high concentration of people.
Reports indicated military forces were mobilized to areas where many
had gathered in support of Morsi, such as Cairo University.
In his televised statement, General Fattah al-Sisi noted the armed
forces were adhering to their civil responsibility and not looking to
move power.  Flanked by opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei and the
Coptic Pope, the General unveiled their road map which included
suspending the constitution, putting the chief justice in charge,
calling for early elections, setting up an interim technocrat
government, and forming a committee to amend the constitution.
General Fattah al-Sisi suggested President Morsi hadn't paid attention
to the military's repeated attempts to get him to push for
reconciliation.  After meeting with opposition and religious leaders,
the armed forces chose to remove Morsi from power.
Finally, Egypt's military chief urged the people to steer away from
violence, but gave an ominous threat: we will stand up firmly and
strictly to any act that stands against the rule of law, he said,
referring to the Muslim Brotherhood and other pro-Morsi supporters who
have gathered en masse.
According to Stratfor, top members of the Muslim Brotherhood and the
Wasat party had been banned from leaving the country, including
President Morsi, and Muslim Brotherhood chief Mohamed Badie and his
deputy, Khairat al-Shater.
Egypt's first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, hasn't
made an appearance on Wednesday.  Morsi had responded defiantly on
Tuesday to the military, urging them to remove a 48-hour ultimatum
that had been placed for achieving national reconciliation, in his
last public appearance.
Markets in the U.S. were already closed by the time of the
announcement, ahead of the July 4 holiday.  While stocks had rallied
on initial rumors of the coup, crude oil, which broke the $100 mark
for the first time since April 2012, began to trend down around 3:00
PM in New York, and was trading at 1.6%.  The Market Vectors Egypt had
rallied sharply, closing the day up 4.3%.

mental illness, and has been in and out of mental health facilities.

The father survived the stabbing and is expected to recover.

allegedly stealing her employer's jewellery valued at N40 million.

The housemaid was arrested following a complaint lodged by Mrs. Adaeze
Nwuba to the police at Zone 2 Command, Onikan, Lagos Island.

In her confessional statement to the police, Rita allegedly admitted
that she was charmed by the fraudster whom she met on the street to
steal the jewellery.

"When I went to buy a recharge card, a young man accosted me on the
street and said heavens told him to help me solve my family problems.
He told me to go back home and bring my madam's jewellery for him to
make a sacrifice for me.

"He promised me that after the sacrifice, all my enemies in my family
will die and I would be able to marry a white man that will take me
abroad. The moment he spoke with me, I lost my senses, and I ran home

allegedly told the police.

Rita said after the man collected the jewellery, he took her to an
unknown place with his car along with two other men and they raped her
in turns.

"He dropped me off at Oshodi Bus Stop the next day and warned me not
to tell anybody about what happened. He promised me that a white man
would approach me for marriage within two days. Before I regained my
consciousness, he had gone," she said.

Rita was charged before an Igbosere Magistrates' Court on a two-count
charge of stealing.

Fire Guts Visafone Office In Lagos

Hell seemed let lose, Tuesday at Saka Tinubu, Victoria Island, Lagos, when fire broke out at the national sales office of Visafone Communications Limited. No life was lost, recharge cards and equipment, said to be worth millions of naira, were lost to the fire which lasted for hours. Although the cause of the fire could not be ascertained, firefighters told newsmen that the fire began on the ground floor of the building. The fire was said to have started from the vault, where recharge cards are stored. Director, Lagos State Fire and Safety Service, Razaq Fadipe, was quoted as saying that over 50,000 litres of water was used in putting out the fire, yet it proved difficult to put out because of the peculiarity of the building. According to him, "There was fire outbreak around 12.56pm at 33 Saka Tinubu Street, Victoria Island, which is where the national sales office of Visafone is located. We rushed down to the scene and were able to evacuate all the occupants of the building. "Initially, we thought the fire was on the first floor because of the direction of the smoke but we later discovered that the fire was from the recharge room otherwise known as the vault. There was no water at the company so I had to get three fire trucks from Onikan, Eti-Osa and Lagos Island fire stations. "The Federal Fire Service also provided a truck of water but the fire proved stubborn. Each truck contains 10,000 litres and they all had to refill twice each in order to put out the fire. The office was arranged in such a way that hindered our work." Fadipe stressed the need for companies to organise fire drills for their staff as this would let them know what to do in case of fire.

21 Common Mistakes in Ramadan

Following are some common mistakes in Ramadaan: 1. Taking Ramadhaan as a ritual For many of us Ramadhaan has lost its spirituality and has become more of a ritual than a form of Ibaadah. We fast from morning to night just because everyone around us is fasting too. We forget that it’s a time to purify our hearts and our souls from all evil....we forget to make dua, forget to beseech Allaah to forgive us and ask Him to save us from the Fire of Hell. Sure we stay away from food and drink but that's about all. Although the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: “Jibreel said to me, ‘May Allaah rub his nose in the dust, that person to who Ramadhaan comes and his sins are not forgiven,’ and I said, ‘Ameen’...." (Tirmidhi, Ahmad, others. Saheeh by al-Albaani) 2. Too much stress on food and drink For some people, the entire month of Ramadhaan revolves around food. They spend the ENTIRE day planning, cooking, shopping and thinking about only food, instead of concentrating on Salaah, Qur'aan and other acts of worship. All they can think of is FOOD, so much so that they turn the month of 'fasting' into the month of 'feasting'. Come Iftaar time, their table is a sight to see, with the multitudes and varieties of food, sweets and drinks. They are missing the very purpose of fasting, and thus, increase in their greed and desires instead of learning to control them. And remember, too much food is also a kind of waste & extravagance. ".....and eat and drink but waste not by extravagance, certainly He (Allaah) likes not Al-Musrifoon (those who waste by extravagance)" [al-A'raaf :31] 3. Spending all day cooking Some of the sisters (either by their own choice or forced by their husbands) are cooking ALL day and ALL night, so that by the end of the day, they are too tired to even pray Ishaa, let alone pray Taraaweeh or Tahajjud; too exhausted to even read Qur'aan. This is the month of mercy and forgiveness, dua and Ibaadah, to increase in your taqwa and to improve your relationship with Allaah. And how can you do that if you spend all your time in the kitchen cooking? So turn off that stove and turn on your Imaan! 4. Eating too much Some people stuff themselves at Suhoor until they are ready to burst, because they think this is the way to not feel hungry during the day and some people eat at Iftaar, like there is no tomorrow, trying to 'make up for the food they missed.' However, this is completely against the Sunnah. Remember, moderation is the key to everything. The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "The son of Adam does not fill any vessel worse than his stomach; for the son of Adam a few mouthfuls are sufficient to keep his back straight. If you must fill it, then, keep one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for air." (Tirmidhi, Ibn Maajah. Saheeh by al-Albaani). Besides, too much food distracts a person from many deeds of obedience and worship, makes him lazy and also makes the heart heedless. It was said to Imam Ahmad: "Does a man find any softness and humility in his heart when he is full?" He said, "I do not think so." 5. Sleeping all day Some people spend their entire day (or a major part of it) 'sleeping away their fast'. Is this what is really required of us during this noble month? These people are also missing the purpose of fasting and just falling prey to laziness and lethargy. All it needs is to exert a little self-control. For a fasting person to spend most of the day asleep is nothing, but negligence on his part. 6. Wasting time The month of Ramadhaan is a precious, precious time, so much so that Allaah calls this month "Ayyaamum Ma'doodaat" (A fixed number of days) (Surah Baqarah: 184). Before we know it, this month of mercy and forgiveness will be over. We should try and spend every moment possible in the worship of Allaah so that we can make the most of this blessing. However, there are some of us who waste away their day playing video games, or worse still, watching TV, movies or even listening to music. Subhaan Allaah! Trying to obey Allaah by DISOBEYING him!?? 7. Fasting but not giving up evil Some of us fast but do not give up lying, cursing, fighting, backbiting, etc. and some of us fast but do not give up cheating, stealing, dealing in haraam, buying lotto tickets, selling alcohol, committing fornication, etc. and all kinds of impermissible things without realizing that the purpose of fasting is to not stay away from food and drink; rather the aim behind it is to fear Allaah. “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become Al-Muttaqoon (the pious)” [al-Baqarah 2:183] The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Whoever does not give up false speech and acting upon it, and ignorance, Allaah has no need of him giving up his food and drink." (Bukhaari) 8. Smoking Smoking is forbidden in Islam whether during Ramadhaan or outside of it, as it is one of al-Khabaa'ith (evil things). And this includes ALL kinds of 'smoking material' whether it is cigars, cigarettes, pipes,'Sheesha', hookah or even worse than that. May Allaah protect us from all that is evil. Ameen. "He allows them as lawful At Tayyibaat (all good and lawful things), and prohibits them as unlawful Al Khabaa'ith (all evil and unlawful things) [al-A'raaf :157] Smoking is harmful, not only to the one smoking, but also to the ones around him. It is also a means of wasting one's wealth. The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "There should be no harming or reciprocating harm." [An-Nawawi Hadith 32] This is especially true during fasting and it invalidates the fast. (Fatwa -Ibn 'Uthaymeen) 9. Skipping Suhoor Some of us are too lazy or sleepy to eat Suhoor or just don't think it's important. Even if you don't feel like having a lot of food, just eat something little; a few dates, even a glass of water. That's because the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Eat suhoor for in suhoor there is blessing."[Bukhaari, Muslim]. And he (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "The thing that differentiates between our fasting and the fasting of the People of the Book is eating suhoor." (Muslim) 10. Stopping Suhoor at 'Imsaak' Some people stop eating Suhoor 10-15 minutes earlier than the time of Fajr to observe 'Imsaak'. They think they cannot eat beyond that time and that it would be wrong if they did. Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen said: "This is a kind of bid'ah (innovation) which has no basis in the Sunnah. Rather the Sunnah is to do the opposite. Allaah allows us to eat until dawn: "and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night)" [al-Baqarah 2:187] And the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said: "….eat and drink until you hear the adhaan of Ibn Umm Maktoom, for he does not give the adhaan until dawn comes." (Bukhaari) This 'imsaak' which some of the people practice, is an addition to what Allaah has prescribed, so it is false. It is a kind of extremism in religion, and the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed, those who go to extremes are doomed." (Muslim) " (Islamqa: question # 12602) 11. Not fasting if they missed Suhoor Sometimes, our alarm doesn't go off on time and we miss the time for eating, just barely waking up with the adhaan. I'm sure this has happened to all of us one time or another. In this situation, there are some people who are too scared to fast if they miss Suhoor. They think they will feel too weak during the day or that, by default, missing Suhoor automatically means NO fast that day. But, if you think about it, unless a person has a genuine health problem, it is not such a big deal after all. What if you missed a few morsels of food? You'll be fine insha Allaah. Alhamdulillaah most of us have enough fat stored in our bodies to keep us going for several days without food! Remember, obedience to Allaah takes precedence over everything. 12. Saying the intention to fast 'out loud' or saying a specific dua to start fasting The intention is an action of the heart. We should resolve in our heart that we are going to fast tomorrow. That is all we need. It is not prescribed by the Shari'ah for us to say out loud, "I intend to fast", "I will fast tomorrow" or other phrases that have been innovated by some people. Also, there is no specific dua to be recited at the time of starting the fast in the correct Sunnah. Whatever 'dua' you may see on some papers or Ramadaan calendars, etc. is a Bid'ah. 13. Delaying breaking fast Some people wait until the adhaan finishes or even several minutes after that, just to be 'on the safe side'. However, the Sunnah is to hasten to break the fast, which means breaking fast whenever the adhaan starts, right after the sun has set. Aa'ishah (RadiyAllaahu 'Anha) said: This is what the Messenger of Allaah (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to do. (Muslim) The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "The people will continue to do well so long as they hasten to break the fast." (Bukhaari, Muslim) So, determine to the best of your ability, the accuracy of your clock, calendar, etc. and then have tawakkul on Allaah and break your fast exactly on time. 14. Eating continuously until the time for Maghrib is up Some people put so much food in their plates when breaking their fast and continue eating, enjoying dessert, drinking tea, etc., until they miss Maghrib. That is obviously not right. The Sunnah of the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) was that once he broke his fast with some dates, them he would hasten to the prayer. Once you are done with the prayer, you can always go back and eat some more if you wish. 15. Missing the golden chance of having your Dua accepted The prayer of the fasting person is guaranteed to be accepted at the time of breaking fast. The Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Three prayers are not rejected: the prayer of a father (parent), the prayer of a fasting person, and the prayer of a traveler." (al-Bayhaqi, saheeh by al-Albaani). Instead of sitting down and making Dua at this precious time, some people forego this beautiful chance, and are too busy frying 'samosas', talking, setting the food, filling their plates and pouring drinks into their glasses and they lose this golden opportunity. Think about it.... Is food more important than the chance to have your sins forgiven or the fulfillment of your Duas? 16. Fasting but not praying Realize that the fasting of one who does not pray WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. This is because not praying constitutes kufr as the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Between a man and shirk and kufr there stands his giving up prayer." (Muslim) In fact, NONE of his good deeds will be accepted; rather, they are all annulled. The Prophet (sal Allaahu Alayhi wa sallam) said: "Whoever does not pray 'Asr, his good deeds will be annulled." (Bukhaari: Book 10 Hadith #528) 17. Fasting and not wearing Hijaab Not wearing the Hijaab is a major sin as it is obligatory for Muslim women. (See Surah Nur, Surah Ahzaab). So fasting and not wearing hijaab certainly takes away enormously from the rewards of fasting, even if does not invalidate it. 18. Not fasting because of exams or work Exams or work is NOT one of the excuses allowed by the Shari'ah to not fast. You can do your studying and revision at night if it is too hard to do that during the day. Also remember that pleasing and obeying Allaah is much more important than 'good grades'. Besides, if you will fulfil your obligation to fast, even if you have to study, Allaah will make it easy for you and help you in everything you do. "Whosoever fears Allah, He will appoint for him a way out and provide for him from where he does not expect, Allah is Sufficient for whosoever puts his trust in Him." (Surah at-Talaaq 2-3) 19. Mixing fasting and dieting DO NOT make the mistake of fasting with the intention to diet. That is one of the biggest mistakes some of us make, especially the sisters. Fasting is an act of worship and should only and only, be for the sake of Allah alone. Otherwise, mixing it with the intention of dieting may become a form of (minor) Shirk. Sure, there are always added benefits of obeying Allaah, one of them being, losing weight while fasting. That comes in automatically, so reap the benefits but don't make it part of your intention. If the side benefits come, they come. If they don't, that shouldn't stop you from obeying Allaah and fulfilling your duty. 20. Fighting over the number of Raka'ah of Taraweeh There is no specific number of rak'ahs for Taraweeh prayer, rather it is permissible to do a little or a lot. Both 8 and 20 are okay. Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen said: "No one should be denounced for praying eleven or twenty-three (raka'ah), because the matter is broader in scope than that, praise be to Allaah." (Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen, 1/407) What is really important, my brothers and sisters, is the command to observe night prayers during Ramadhaan, which is encouraged without specifying a particular number. As long as we are praying our Taraaweeh, it shouldn't be a matter of dispute or disunity whether it is 8 or 20 or even more. And of course, what really counts is that Allaah accepts it from us, even if it is two rakaat, right? 21. Praying ONLY on the night of the 27th Some people pray ONLY on the 27th to seek Lailat ul-Qadr, neglecting all other odd nights, although the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) said: "Seek Lailat ul-Qadr among the odd numbered nights of the last ten nights of Ramadhaan." (Bukhaari, Muslim). 22. Wasting the last part of Ramadhaan preparing for Eid Some people waste the entire last 10 days of Ramadhaan preparing for Eid, shopping and frequenting malls, etc. neglecting Ibaadah and Lailatul Qadr, although, the Prophet (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam) used to strive the hardest during the last ten days of Ramadhaan in worship and not in shopping. Aa’ishah (RadiyAllaahu 'Anha) said: “When the (last) ten nights began, the Messenger of Allaah (Sal Allaahu Alaiyhi wa Sallam)) would tighten his waist-wrapper (i.e., strive hard in worship or refrain from intimacy with his wives), stay awake at night and wake his family.” (Bukhaari and Muslim). 23. Lavish Iftaar parties Although inviting each other for breaking fast is something good and encouraged, some people go to extremes with lavish 'Iftaar parties' with all sorts of disobedience to Allaah, from flirting, mixing of the sexes and hijaab-less women, to show-off and extravagance, to heedlessness to Salaah and Taraaweeh, to even music and dancing. May Allaah guide us. Ameen. By Asma bint Shameem

Islamic group wants separate camps for male and female corps members

The Jama'atu Nasril Islam (JNI) has called on the management of the
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to stop mixing males and females
in the National Youth Service Scheme physical exercise at orientation
camps as it violates Islamic tenets and offends the sensibilities of
Muslims.

This JNI Secretary General, Dr. Khalid Abubakar, said this at the end
of a peace and unity conference for Muslim scholars in Kaduna State.

Abubakar called on the NYSC to respect the decency and chastity of
female corps members during physical exercises and other activities at
the orientation camps, and provide alternative camps for female Muslim
corps members.

Why I Hate Taking Pictures At Events - BankyW

Here's what Banky said in an interview with Vanguard. He also got to
mention how Uzi, Ikechukwu's brother is trying to whip him into shape
like Peter Okoye.

The least favourite aspect of my job is when I have to do
photo-shoots. I hate photo-shoots. I love video shoots because it
seems that I am playing a role in a short movie. Photo-shoots I hate
like I hate taking pictures at events. I find it really annoying
because you stand there and you are expected to strike poses and do
all the random things you do when doing a photo-shoot.

Even though I don't like it, I have to do it because obviously, I need
pictures for my CD covers and interviews. I don't enjoy it at all. So
I try to limit them. I really shouldn't be saying this because my
manager will be upset with me. I only do photo-shoots when I have a
new album coming out.

So, when I do that shoot, I try to take as many different pictures as
I can so that they will leave me alone at least for the next two
years. But they are necessary, because people need to see you and
connect with your image as well. So it is a necessary evil.

A typical day in my life starts from when I wake up. First, I try to
say a little prayer to get my day started. Then I go out to work out
with my trainer Uzi. He is the younger brother of Ikechukwu. He is an
amazing physical trainer.  He tries to get me into shape so that I can
look like Peter from P-Square. After my training, I come home, shower
and dress for work.

The Holy Month of Ramadan & Its Benefits

Muslims around the world anticipate the arrival of the holiest month of the year. During Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Muslims from all continents unite in a period of fasting and spiritual reflection.

Ramadan Basics: Each year, Muslims spend the ninth month of the Islamic calendar observing a community-wide fast. The annual fast of Ramadan is considered one of the five “pillars” of Islam. Muslims who are physically able are required to fast each day of the entire month, from sunrise to sunset. The evenings are spent enjoying family and community meals, engaging in prayer and spiritual reflection, and reading from the QUR’AN.

Ramadan fasting

What is Ramadan?
During the blessed month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the world abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours. As a time to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice, Ramadan is much more than just not eating and drinking.

Muslims are called upon to use this month to re-evaluate their lives in light of Islamic guidance. We are to make peace with those who have wronged us, strengthen ties with family and friends, do away with bad habits — essentially to clean up our lives, our thoughts, and our feelings. The Arabic word for “fasting” (swam) literally means “to refrain” – and it means not only refraining from food and drink, but from evil actions, thoughts, and words.

During Ramadan, every part of the body must be restrained. The tongue must be restrained from backbiting and gossip. The eyes must restrain themselves from looking at unlawful things. The hand must not touch or take anything that does not belong to it. The ears must refrain from listening to idle talk or obscene words. The feet must refrain from going to sinful places. In such a way, every part of the body observes the fast.

Therefore, fasting is not merely physical, but is rather the total commitment of the person’s body and soul to the spirit of the fast. Ramadan is a time to practice self-restraint; a time to cleanse the body and soul from impurities and re-focus one’s self on the worship of God.

Benefits of Ramadan:
Ramadan is a period of fasting, reflection, devotion, generosity and sacrifice observed by Muslims around the world. While major holidays of other faiths have largely become commercialized events, Ramadan retains its intense spiritual meaning.

The word “Ramadan” comes from the Arabic root word for “parched thirst” and “sun-baked ground.” It is expressive of the hunger and thirst felt by those who spend the month in fasting. As opposed to other holidays, when people often indulge, Ramadan is by nature a time of sacrifice.
  • Through fasting, a Muslim experiences hunger and thirst, and sympathizes with those in the world who have little to eat every day.
  • Through increased devotion, Muslims feel closer to their Creator, and recognize that everything we have in this life is a blessing from Him.
  • Through increased charity, Muslims develop feelings of generosity and good-will toward others. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) once said, “A man’s wealth is never diminished by charity.”
  • Through self-control, a Muslim practices good manners, good speech, and good habits.
  • Through changing routines, Muslims have a chance to establish more healthy lifestyle habits — particularly with regards to diet and smoking.
  • Through family and community gatherings, Muslims strengthen the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, in their own communities and throughout the world.
Ramadan is a very special time for Muslims, but the feelings and lessons we experience should stay with us throughout the year. In the Qur’an, Muslims are commanded to fast so that they may “learn self-restraint” (Qur’an 2:183). This restraint and devotion is especially felt during Ramadan, but we all must strive to make the feelings and attitudes stay with us during our “normal” lives. That is the true goal and test of Ramadan.
Ramadan holy month
May Allah accept our fasting, forgive our sins, and guide us all to the Straight Path. May Allah bless us all during Ramadan, and throughout the year, with His forgiveness, mercy, and peace, and bring us all closer to Him and to each other.

Was ‘Yvonne Nelson, I lost your medicine’ really a diss? – Iyanya’s Tim Westwood freestyle: An analysis

Yvonne-Nelson-and-Iyanya

Over the weekend the internet was hit with news of a certain freestyle performance Iyanya gave while over at Tim Westwood’s studio in the UK. In particular, some lyrics he added, seemingly spur of the moment, to his song “Your Waist,” raised a couple of eyebrows. Well, to be fair, simply mentioning the name “Yvonne Nelson” so soon after she gave an interview where she pretty much called him a lying, cheating scumbag. Okay, those weren’t her exact words, but you get the point.
Anyway, his freestyle has been taken by many to be something of a diss to Yvonne Nelson, something we are not so sure about. Below we present an analysis of the “controversial” lyrics in question, and offer suggestions as to what they might actually mean.

1.      “Yvonne Nelson, I lost your medicine.”
Okay this part is pretty self-explanatory. Iyanya lost medicine meant for someone called Yvonne Nelson. Fairly straightforward. But then, why did Iyanya have Yvonne Nelson’s medicine to begin with? Iyanya isn’t a doctor, after all, neither is he a pharmacist; unless of course he runs an undercover medical practice while using his music career as a front. A logical explanation would be that Yvonne Nelson was sick, and Iyanya, being the nice guy that he is, went to get medicine for her.  Unfortunately Iyanya’s niceness has no bearing on carefulness, or lack, thereof, as he ended up losing said medicine. A pity.

2.       “Yvonne Nelson, I have your medicine.”
Well, this part is kind of odd. First he lost her medicine and all of a sudden he has it again? Or is he thinking back to the time when he had the medicine for whatever illness he was trying to help her with? Our conclusion here is that Iyanya ran back to the drugstore to get another pack of medicine for Ms Nelson.

3.       “All I want is your waist, no emotions, no tears, no letters, no love, no nothing.”
So this is where it becomes clear what the problem really is; Yvonne Nelson suffers from waist pains. This should have been clear from the beginning really, considering some of her poses in her recent promo shots.
Exhibit A

Posing like that can’t possibly be comfortable. Iyanya, on the other hand, in all his benevolence, is concerned about her waist. It’s all he can think about. But the waist pains are quite a lot for poor Yvonne to bear, and she’s been crying; so Iyanya makes it his mission to make sure she gets better, and her waist pains go away for good; he wants her to stop crying, (“no emotions, no tears”) and for her to feel relief (“no nothing”). Ah, that Iyanya, such a nice guy.

4.       “All I want is your waist, she ain’t even know it.”
At this point Yvonne has taken her medicine, and her pain has been relieved. So much so that she’s barely even aware that the pain was ever present – “she ain’t even know it.”

5.      “She brought emotions.
Yvonne is overcome with emotion as she realizes Iyanya has helped her heal. She’s happy, and thankful.
So at this point it’s quite clear that Iyanya was actually not dissing Yvonne Nelson as we all previously assumed, but was simply trying to tell us how kind he was to her, using his carefully layered and intricately worded lyrics.

How Woman Married Two Men At The Same Time

An Ikeja Magistrate’s Court was told, yesterday, how a woman, Mrs. Adedoyin Ogunmefun, allegedly married two men at the same time.

She was also accused of having children for the two men she allegedly married.
Mrs Ogunmefun, who was arraigned alongside her second husband, before Magistrate B. O. Osunsanmi, over alleged forgery of National Population Commission certificate of birth AO8/NO/0268923 and AO8/NO/0268922 was said to have been married to one Mr. Abraham Okoro, who she had two children for before leaving to have another child for the second husband.

The Police prosecutor, Mr. Benson Emurih, told the court that the defendants presented the forged certificates to Parthcare Laboratory in Oduduwa Crescent, GRA, Ikeja.

He said the offence was punishable under sections 409,363 (3) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2011.

The complainant, Abraham Okoro, said he had lived with his estranged wife between 2000 and 2007, adding that the union produced two children namely Kymberly Abieyuwa Adenike Okoro and Bryant Amadin Olamipo Okoro, who were born in Nigeria and US respectively.

He further accused the wife of deserting their marriage for Ogunmefun, who she had a daughter for in 2009.

In addition, Okoro said the accused was told that for her to be accepted back into her matrimonial home, she would perform some traditional rites of cleansing.

His words: “She agreed to demonstrate her love and loyalty and moved back to my house on February 14, 2012 and we started living together again until May 17,2012, when she went to an Ikeja High Court to file for nullification of her marriage with Mr Ogunmefun before Justice Oyewole.’’
Okoro, however, said his wife moved out of his house again on November 3, 2012, noting that she suddenly wrote him a letter through her lawyer, Taiwo and Taiwo, in December 2012 claiming that the two children she had for him were not his.

He said: “On March 26, 2013, I got a court summon, the petitioners were Adedoyin Ogunmefun and Babatunde Ogunmefun, claiming that my children were Babatunde’s children, with a fake DNA result purported to embarrass me and my children, the matter which has long been strucked out by a magistrate court sitting in Surulere,” he added. Beware! Online Comments Could Land You In Jail

Online-comments-could-land-you-in-jail
All over the world, the social media has provided individuals with the opportunity to express themselves. Unlike real life situations where social etiquette and manners are largely restrictive and limiting, people tend to have a greater sense of freedom in expressing their interests, feelings, ideas, views and opinions on social media.

While browsing the comment sections of some news websites, blogs, forums and discussion groups, this reporter often stumbles on touchy comments or reactions by online readers whenever they feel disenchanted by the subject of a certain news story.

For example, Jonathan’s adventure and engagement with Nigerians on Facebook has made him one of the most insulted personalities on the social network. Many Nigerians who object to his policies have taken advantage of the social media to continually criticise and hurl insults and abuses at him at every opportunity.

Besides, despite Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, which clearly warns users to respect the rights of other people and to avoid posting content or taking any action on Facebook that infringes or violates someone else’s rights, it is common to see some people commit slander, spread lies or use lewd and profane languages to hurt others.

It is so easy for someone to upload a video on YouTube, start a group on Facebook, tweet a statement on Twitter or open a blog and start writing to attack another person’s reputation. The spontaneity with which messages go viral on the Internet further complicates matters.
However, legal experts in Nigeria warn that social media users who engage in the act of damaging people’s reputation need to retrace their steps.

According to them, the absence of a comprehensive law in the country, since Nigeria has yet to have specific laws addressing slander committed via social networks, should not be seen as providing a leeway for citizens to engage in such despicable acts.

They argue that the Evidence Act as amended in 2011 makes provision for the admissibility of computer generated evidence to prove such cases in the law court.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association, Ikeja Branch, Mr. Monday Ubani, notes that messages, which defame other people on social networks have assumed alarming dimension.
Ubani says anyone who suffers acts of defamation on social media could, as a result of the amended section of the Evidence Act, seek redress in court.

Describing defamation as a dual-nature offence, which makes it either a civil wrong or a criminal act, he says the civil form of defamation seeks to protect one’s reputation and good name from being tainted. In criminal defamation, the law seeks to prevent a situation, especially on the part of State, where public peace is endangered.

He says, “Section 84 of the Evidence Act, as amended in 2011, makes provision for admissibility of computer-generated evidence, and such evidence(s) of defamation on social networks will be acceptable when tendered once the complainant, can establish the source of the evidence; and the process of collecting the evidence can be certified.

“If the accused is found guilty in the case of criminal form of defamation, he or she risks jail term. Section 375 of the Criminal Code classifies defamation as a misdemeanour and when found liable, the accused faces a sentence of one year imprisonment.

“But if you publish a defamatory comment or material and it could be proved that the accused knows full well that the statement is false before publishing on the said medium, the accused if convicted will be sentenced to two year imprisonment.

“However, Section 376 of the Criminal Code frowns at people who defame other people’s character with the intent to extort or induce the affected person to part with money or property. Such acts are classified as felony and if found guilty, the accused risks seven years’ imprisonment for the injuries and damages done.’’

Ubani says the civil form of defamation could make the defendants pay huge sums of money in terms of remedies after determination of such suits. He advises Nigerians who make avid use of the social media to be careful with what they post on social networks as it could backfire.

Stemming from the absence of a clear-cut comprehensive law in the country guiding people’s modus operandi on social platforms, Ubani urged the National Assembly to make laws that would protect citizens from suffering injuries as a result of defamation on social media.

“We are in a digital generation and the National Assembly should move with the times. We need a substantive law that would protect people from character assassination and defamation on social platforms. We cannot continue to dwell on old laws in this age,” he adds. [iPunch]

'He was at Malaga airport [on Tuesday], he's been in Marbella on holiday. He comes back to Tottenham for pre-season training next week.'
Bale said in interview with Esquire magazine this week that playing in the Champions League is key to him.
He said: 'When you play in the Premier League, say you're playing against a lower-end team, they set up to defend all the time, they set up to block you off. But when you play in the Champions League, all the other teams are used to winning every week, so it's more of an open game, it's more attacking, end-to-end.

'No one's used to defending, everyone's used to attacking and trying to win games, so it's just all against all.'
He added: 'The music is a massive thing - Zadok the Priest (Handel's anthem that announces the arrival of the teams). When we first got into the Champions League, it's one of the things that most of the lads were looking forward to, hearing it in the stadium. It's little things like that which make it special.'
