Nigerians to start paying £3, 000 to enter the UK from November

Naija people, una dey hear this one? According to a report by UK Daily Mail, visitors from 'high risk' countries in Africa and Asia will have to put up a £3,000 cash bond to enter Britain.

The money will be kept by the Government if visitors do not return home by the time their visas expire.

A pilot scheme, introduced by Home Secretary Theresa May, will target hundreds of people coming to Britain on six-month visit visas from India, Pakistan, Nigeria, Ghana, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The countries have been picked for their high number of visa applications and what the Government sees as relatively high levels of immigration abuse and fraud, reports the Sunday Times.

The bonds, to be introduced from November, will only apply to non-EU migrants, otherwise they would fall foul of European rights to free movement.

'This is the next step in making sure our immigration system is more selective, bringing down net migration from the hundreds of thousands to the tens of thousands while still welcoming the brightest and the best to Britain,' Mrs May told the Sunday Times.

'In the long run we’re interested in a system of bonds that deters overstaying and recovers costs if a foreign national has used our public services.'

A second scheme will cover countries such as Kenya, the newspaper reports, which are considered to be lower-risk because immigration officials have fewer doubts about migrants' plans to return home.

About 2.2million people are granted visas to enter Britain every year. Last year 296,000 people from India were granted six-month visas, as were 101,000 from Nigeria, 53,000 from Pakistan and 14,000 apiece from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

The Home Secretary plans to reduce annual net migration to under 100,000 by 2015.

A Pakistani guide also died in the attack. It happened at the base camp of Nanga Parbat, the world’s ninth highest mountain, in Gilgit-Baltistan.It is the first such attack on tourists in the region. A Sunni militant group, Jundullah, said it was responsible.Police had at first said 10 foreign tourists had died. The motive for the killings is not yet clear.
One person, said to be Chinese, has survived the attack.Part of the Himalayan Range, Nanga Parbat, standing at 8,126m (26,660ft), is popular with trekkers and mountaineers, especially during June and July.
The assault is seen as a significant blow for Pakistan’s already struggling tourist industry, the BBC says.Gilgit-Baltistan, which borders China, had so far been considered one of the more secure areas under Pakistani control.
The attackers, reportedly dressed in police uniforms, stormed the hotel at the base camp in the foothills of Nanga Parbat shortly after midnight.

Why I Abandoned My Baby In The Bush — Abuja Woman

Favour Abdulazeez, who claimed to be the mother of a baby girl abandoned at the  backyard of an apartment in Kuje, Abuja, has solicited financial assistance from the public to enable her to claim and take care of the baby.
Ms. Abdulazeez told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that she abandoned her baby because she was jobless, divorced and had no means of fostering the child. She said that when she kept the carton with the baby inside the bush, she did not go away but hid in the bush to know who would pick the baby.
She stated that she did this to enable her know the person who would pick the baby girl to enable her to do a follow-up.“All along, I was monitoring the baby’s situation, I know those who picked the baby and took her to the police.“I was listening to their conversation from my hideout, I even followed them from a distance when they were taking my baby away,” she said.
Ms. Abdulazeez, who turned up at the police outpost in Gwagwalada on Friday to claim ownership of the baby, added: “I told the police that I would take care of my baby if only the government would assist me with a job or a trade no matter how small.’’Inspector  Yahaya Musa, the Police Area Command in Gwagwalada, FCT, had on Friday declined comments on the matter, saying that he was not authorised to speak to newsmen on the matter.
Mr. Musa instead referred NAN reporter to the social welfare unit of the Gwagwalada Area Council for further enquiries.Hanatu Turu, Head of the Social Welfare Department of Gwagwalada Area Council, said that she was aware of the incident. She said the police should be allowed to conclude their investigations.
Ms. Abdulazeez was said to have been delivered of the baby girl on June 13 and secretly put her in a carton and took her to a nearby bush behind her house at night, where she abandoned the baby.
A resident in the area, who pleaded anonymity, told NAN that Abdulazeez is her neighour, adding that it was the cry of the baby that drew the attention of passers-by who later took the baby to the police outpost.

Video: Nigeria 0-3 Spain

Spain wrapped up their group stage campaign of the Confederations Cup with ease after recording a comfortable 3-0 victory over Nigeria at the Estadio Castelao Fortaleza.
A brilliant solo double from Jordi Alba and a header from substitute Fernando Torres sealed the victory over a disappointing Super Eagles side, who were undone by their own inability to finish the numerous chances that came their way.
Predictably, Vicente Del Bosque made a number of changes from the side that dismantled Tahiti 10-0 on Thursday, with Victor Valdes starting in goal. Nigeria meanwhile, made two changes from the line-up that suffered defeat against Uruguay. And Spain settled into their rhythm early on, with Andres Iniesta nutmegging a defender en route to testing Vincent Enyeama with a good effort inside a minute.
However, the early barrage continued, with Jordi Alba opening the scoring two minutes later in scintillating fashion.Picking up the ball after a neat pass from Iniesta, the Barcelona full-back embarked on a fine run, slaloming past three Nigerian defenders before coolly slotting the ball past Enyeama to put La Roja 1-0 up.
The African champions struggled in the opening exchanges, with Cesc Fabregas denied by Enyaema, but at the other end, they too saw a chance go begging, with Sergio Ramos hurriedly thwarting John Obi Mikel, after the ball had fallen to him following good work by Joseph Akpala.Stephen Keshi’s side rallied, and were posing numerous problems for the world and European champions. Set through by Ideye Brown, Sunday Mba produced a stinging effort from distance which required Valdes to divert it away for a corner. But Spain continued to dominate in search for a second.
First, Ramos’ superb long ball picked out Roberto Soldado, whose brief hesitation allowed Enyeama to recover, before the Valencia striker’s pin-point delivery off the wing for Fabregas, saw the latter strike against the post.Nigeria’s profligate finishing continued early into the second half. Ahmed Musa’s threatening delivery off the right flank picked out Brown in the middle, but somehow, the striker couldn’t connect cleanly with the ball, though at the other end, Xavi flashed a free-kick narrowly over the bar as both sides’ search for another goal continued.
Just after the hour, Spain doubled their advantage. Torres, who had been only on the field for two minutes, capitalised on some poor defending to power a header from Pedro’s fine cross.Nigeria began to tire towards the end of the second period, amidst the typical passing intensity imposed by their opponents, but they once again failed to beat Valdes in the Spain goal.
Another teasing delivery from Musa saw substitute Muhammad Gambo to somehow fire horribly wide of the post.Alba wrapped up a fine performance with two minutes to go, latching onto David Silva’s long pass to round Enyeama and into an empty net to seal an emphatic second and Spain’s third.
Spain top Group B with nine points, and will face Itay in a rematch of last year’s Euro 2012 final in the last four on Thursday in Fortaleza.
In the other group match, uruguay thrashed tahiti 8-0.

Governor Aregbesola Denies Slapping His Deputy

aregbe

Osun State Governor, Mr. Rauf Aregbesola has denied ever slapping his deputy, Mrs. Grace Tomori, stressing that the rumor was aimed at causing disaffection capable of destabilising the state.
The governor said a cordial relationship exists between the two of them.
He added that “I have never beaten anybody in my life. In fact, I don’t beat my children, let alone beating any other person. More so, the Deputy Governor is older than me, so how do I beat an elderly person.”
Governor Aregbesola, who spoke during a seven hour live programme tagged ‘Ogbeni till day break,’ weekend, maintained: “I don’t have any quarrel with my Deputy, and I can’t have any with her because I intentionally chose her and no one choose her for me.
“I think I can work with her and that is why I chose her. So, no differences exist between us.”
The deputy governor who was also present at the programme confirmed the claims of the governor when she was asked to respond to the allegation that the governor once slapped her.
The deputy governor stressed that a cordial relationship exists between her and the governor,, adding that she would remain loyal to the governor.
On the crisis rocking the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Governor Aregbesola said: “Let the NGF take care of itself. The forum is a voluntary one and it is not compulsory that every Governor is a member.”
He also denied insinuation that the debt profile of the state has risen to N300 billion, saying that the opposition was only making the allegation to destabilise the progress of the state and cause confusion.
…lauded by Okonjo-Iweala, World Bank, over good governance

In the same breath, the governor said that the nation would be great economically only if its people became very productive.

Bank Manager Arrested For Conniving With Robbers To Rob His Bank

wpid-police-logo_20.gif

An Operations Manager with a first generation bank in Agbor, Delta State has been arrested by the police for allegedly conniving with an armed robbery gang that raided the bank, weekend.
The gang had in a commando style operation, succeeded in carting away millions of naira in both local and foreign currencies on Friday, while some bank customers and passers-by were wounded in the process.
Delta State Police command’s spokesman, Mr. Lucky Uyabeme, said that “the arrested Operations Manager of the bank is helping the police in its investigation. The command will not leave any stone unturned in ensuring that all the hoodlums involved are brought to book.
“Preliminary investigation revealed an insider connection in the bank robbery as the two keys to the strong room that were supposed to be kept by two different senior staff were left with the Operations Manager, who in turn left the strong room open.
“The four bullet proof doors were not tampered with. One of the senior staff of the bank who was supposed to be with one of the keys to the strong room purported to be sick, handed over the keys to the Operations Manager,” Uyabeme said.

Don Jazzy, P Square React To Backlash Over OJB Jezreel’s Health

ojb

Some frontline artistes have reacted to angry backlash from some members of the public over their alleged refusal to lend a helping hand to ailing music producer and artiste, OJB Jezreel.
OJB Jezreel, who produced Tuface’s highly successful song, African Queen, is currently battling with a kidney-related ailment and is reported to be in need of N16 million for a kidney transplant. The social media have been awash with various messages in the past few days, requesting help to raise the sum needed to get him back on his feet.
Many Nigerians received BlackBerry Messenger broadcast messages, Facebook updates, tweets, among others, on social media, while the hashtag, #SaveOJBJezreel was also employed to get the campaign into the hearts of Nigerians on Twitter.
But those whose social media platforms were flooded with several requests for help wondered why OJB Jezreel’s colleagues in the entertainment industry, many of who seem to be in money, based on the luxurious lifestyles they lead, could not put heads together to foot the bill.
In this wise, a handful of them who were taken aback by the development took to the social media to express their disappointment. For instance, a BBM message that circulated last week states, “If Wizkid can damage a N15m Porsche Panamera car in less than two months; if D’Banj can put on a N3m suit just for a show; if Davido can refer to a N10m endorsement deal as chicken change; if PSquare can buy just a property for N400m, if Don Jazzy can pop a $1.5Million champagne for just a bottle oo – and the many others, why can’t they put heads together and donate just $100,000 (N15m) in just 24 hours? It’s obvious there’s beef in the industry. If all these big artistes don’t save OJB Jezreel with their money, Sango kills anyone who goes to studio to produce ‘Tribute to OJB.’’’
Reacting to the backlash, Peter of the Nigerian R and B duo, P Square, took to his Twitter account to inform his over 300,000 fans on the social network he was not shying away from helping him.
He tweeted, “OJB Jezreel, you’ve got our support and prayers. We can’t afford to lose you. Thanks peeps for also showing love for a brother.’’
In a similar fashion, Chief Executive Officer, Mavin Records, Don Jazzy, urges his Twitter fans never to wait for his co-celebrities before they donate to save the life of OJB Jezreel.
“Guys, do not wait for celebrities alone. Anything you can do also can #HelpSaveOjb. May God help us all,’’ he says.
However, the explanation of the duo of P Square and Don Jazzy did little to placate those angry over the apparent apathy shown by leading entertainers to OJB Jezreel’s plight.
A comment on an online forum, nairaland.com by one, Hegelian, says, “If they can’t help one of their own, then they have all failed. We are the ones that buy their songs, attend their shows, pay for their endorsements, make them rich such that they flaunt and jump about. Yet, they want us to pay for their medical bills! For wetin naaa? Very soon, we will be paying for their coffins and funerals.
“If they cannot come together and pay this meagre amount (at least many of them sing about saying molowo molowo molowo noni ahnn ahnn- I’m rich, rich, rich and rich…), then it’s their fault not ours. We are supposed to be the one crying for help from them and not the other way round.’’
Another person on the forum, Daily News, observes that many of the celebrities may be living a false life of wealth displays since they are unable to raise what they regarded as a ‘’meagre’’ amount.
The person notes, “That means Nigerian musical artistes have been lying and deceiving themselves with their wealth display of recent, hmmm. So, Don Jazzy alone can’t foot this meagre bill after posing with a multi-million naira wine?
“Tuface, Don Jazzy, P Square, Wizkid, Dbanj, and Davido alone should be able to raise N15m for this guy in two days.
“Or better still, let them organise an urgent musical concert to raise funds for him because most ordinary Nigerians won’t contribute from the way I see things. The musical celebs ought to do this. This is not a great deal if truly the wealth they usually display is real, and not a false way of deceiving gullible-minded girls and their fans into falling for their unnecessary show-offs, and again, if they have a brotherly heart they ought to help him without calling for outside assistance.”
A visit to the Twitter handle of OJB Jezreel, @ojbjiggaman, on Sunday shows that he has since been retweeting messages of assistance which his well wishers have been circulating on the micro-blogging service.
The last message he posted via his Twitter handle states, “Thank you for your continuous love and support. May God bless all of us. Amen.’’
Don Jazzy was said to have donated N1m to him over the weekend, ruggedman has also donated.

Girl Wakes In Mortuary 2 Days After Death

Miracles are still happening! Twenty-one-year-old Adora Ugwu is planning to be a soldier. She also wants to secure admission into one of the country’s tertiary institutions. She had put her hands on the plough of her latter dream by writing the last UMTE. But, as she was going for the other one, she died. Two days after the lady wrote the examination, she was heading for her home state of Enugu for the recruitment into the Nigerian Army when the vehicle she was travelling had a head-on collision with a similar minibus. The result: her death and that of 25 others who included four discharged members of batch B National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Twenty of them including Adora reportedly died on the spot in head on collision involving two 15 passengers’ capacity buses, each, belonging separately to Peace Mass Transit Limited and the Enugu State Transport Company (ENTRACO). The buses had registration number BENUE – XB 504 TKP, ENUGU – XL 812 UWN respectively. The ghastly crash occurred along Enugu- Markudi express road, at Amoka in Udi, Enugu State on June 20th. Immediately after the crash which was promptly reported to the Enugu State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) by its Delta State Sector Commander Lukas Ikpi who met the accident while travelling on the road, the dead including Adora were evacuated to Our Saviour Hospital morgue at 9th mile. But she was not meant to stay among the dead for long. Two days after she had been confined to the mortuary. The parents had wept and mourned, most of them especially the mother was devastated, but the dead must be buried. And this was what Adora’s relative intended doing: bury her two day-old corpse. At the morgue, the attendants were putting in place all the deeds of mortification when suddenly there was a sound; a sneeze, it was. They looked around, then another one! Behold, the body being prepared for claim by the relatives had just sneezed. The dead don’t sneeze, they reasoned. Adora, whose body was being prepared, is not dead after all. When Saturday Mirror asked her what she felt on her first realization of consciousness, she said: “I thought we were all sleeping. When I asked people around where I was, she said they said I had an accident. “I cannot remember anything that happened when I was at the mortuary.” When Adora was discovered to be alive, her relative who had come to identify her was immediately called phoned the others from the morgue. Tears turned to felicitation. From the morgue she was later transferred to the Federal Orthopaedic Hospital in Enugu where is currently receiving treatment and spoke with Saturday Mirror. Adora, told Saturday Mirror that she hails from Enugu state. She said she attended a secondary school in North-Bank Markudi, Benue State adding that she was in Benue to take her JAMB after which she was travelling down to Enugu for army recruitment when the accident occurred. God is merciful…

Premier League move to ban internet sites that stream live matches

The Premier League is to take legal action to make internet service providers block a website which streams live football matches. The governing body - which agreed a new worldwide television deal worth around £5.5billion over three years to start with the new season - is in the process of requesting a court order which would force ISPs to effectively ban their customers from accessing www.FirstRow1.eu, a website based in Sweden. The moves follow on from those made by the music and film industries, which have successfully blocked websites which offer the opportunity to download copyrighted material, such as Pirate Bay, under Section 97 of the 1988 Copyright, Design and Patent Act. BT is to move into the live broadcast market for the 2013-14 season, having paid £246million to the Premier League for three years - and is set to offer free access to their live sports offerings to its broadband subscribers. Sky also acts as an ISP, and has invested £760million in their football coverage for the next three seasons. The Premier League has already written to the major UK ISPs, which also include Virgin Media and TalkTalk, to outline its plans to apply for a court order to block www.FirstRow1.eu, which are expected to be put forwards by the end of the month. Should the court order be granted, the ISPs would then have to contest the application, or comply and restrict access. It is understood indications are the ISPs have no plans to go against any such application. The Premier League has for many years monitored various websites during live matches and enforced the removal of any streaming content which breaches copyright.

Nigerian Music Stars Missing In Action, Where Are They?

As the world last Friday marked the world music day, not a few
stakeholders have noted that music afterall as been said to express
that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain
silent. Music has created an avenue for all and sundry to have a
reason to be happy at all times. But when some music stars disappear
from the radar, it gives music lovers reasons to wonder why. OLUSOLA
OLUJIDE AYODELE takes a look at some music acts who made waves in
times past but are becoming less visible on the Nigerian entertainment
stage.

Bigiano

Gabriel Bablalola, known as Bigiano joined Peter and Paul Martins in
2001 to form a group named Triple B. however, in 2004, the centre
could no longer hold and Bigiano went solo. In 2008, Bigiano made a
compelling appearance on the music scene with themonster hit track,
'Shayo' and went on to become more popular than his early group
members. He was involved in several shows based on the commercial
success of the 'Shayo' song. He released a few more songs which made
waves so to say. But ever since then, little has been heard of him
music wise. His former group members in an interview said they knew he
wasn't going to last in the music scene because he allowed little
things get into his head and would be unable to handle fame. Could
that be the reason why he has gone into oblivion? He however said, his
absence from the scene was deliberate, as he wanted to spend more time
with his family.

Tony Tetuila

Anthony Olanrewaju Awotoye better known as Tony Tetuila is known for
these songs 'My Car' and 'E go better'. He was a former member of the
Remedies, along with Eedris Abdulkareem and Eddy Montana. He broke out
of the group and went solo. He was hugely successful when he went solo
and sadly, he hasn't been able to live up to the super star tag put on
him. It is a known fact that he is struggling to regain relevance as
he has been appearing in few musical videos. He still maintains
cordial relationship with people like Tuface and regularly seen at the
ever bubbling places in Lagos. He was one of his groomsmen during
Tuface's wedding. Rumour has it that he impregnated a young lady
living in the United Kingdom.

Deebee

Deebee, a Bariga-bred artiste burst into the music scene with a
monster hit song 'Collabo' in 2008. He was the cynosure of all eyes as
almost every DJ played his songs. In fact, the song was very
successful, commercially. As expected, he released a few more songs
after and just like those before him, he went dark totally. Nothing
has been heard from him ever since then. Probably, he is in
collaboration with some other pressing matters.

Ashionye

She started out as a member of girl band and then went solo like the
Plantashun Boiz and Destiny's Child. Her song "Dance for Me" dominated
airwaves for a bit. The accompanying video was heralded for its dance
moves and also for being very colourful. In an industry where there
has always been a dearth of female acts, Ashionye showed a lot of
promise.Alas, it was not to be. These days, she's more of an actress,
and even had a brief stint on TV show 'Tinsel'. Her reason for her
long absence from the music scene was because she was pregnant and had
to take time out to raise him.

JayRu

Featuring Wizkid on your song is almost a guaranteed formula for
success. That formula definitely provided a solution for JayRu. He
sang 'Familiarity' featuring Wizkid. The song was a success probably,
due to the fact that Wizkid was featured. "Ye ma form familiarity" was
what the people were shouting, until JayRu went silent, and everybody
also stopped forming familiarity. He has tried to release songs into
the market but sadly, they have not been commercial hits.

Alariwo

After the passing of Afrobeat legend, Fela Kuti, the only other acts
representing for that genre of music were his sons, Femi & Seun,
Lagbaja and maybe Dede Mabiaku. That was until Alariwo burst on to the
scene with "Yawa Go Gas". Despite multiple efforts, it's been quite
difficult for the crossover king to have the same amount of relevance
he managed with his debut.

Dekunle Fuji

Adekunle Oloyede Michael Olalekan better known as Dekunle Fuji was
once a toast in the music industry especially the gospel genre. He had
some beautiful songs that ruled the airwaves at some point in his
career. We can all recall the popular track with"lelelelele, mo like
Jesugan, monife Jesugan" lyrics. He performed at shows, notably the
international acclaimed gospel show, 'The Experience'. It looked like
music wasn't in for him here in Nigeria as he was no longer getting
shows and had to relocate to the United States. The gist now is that
he is now a certified nurse, though he still performs there.

President Jonathan Can’t Solve PDP Crisis – Atiku

Former vice-president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has said that only a nonpartisan committee “that will have authority and autonomy to devise the appropriate strategy to resolve the ongoing turmoil” can bring back peace in the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The former vice-president, in an article he wrote, a copy of which was made available to us, noted that the task of rebuilding the party was urgent. “As the current head of state and a leader of the party, it is incumbent upon President Jonathan to permit the establishment of a nonpartisan committee that will have the authority and autonomy to devise the appropriate strategy to resolve the ongoing turmoil once and for all and rescue the PDP from extinction. “As one of the founding fathers of the PDP, I cannot afford to be indifferent to these regretful developments within my party. The escalation of sectarian and tribal threats over the up-coming election is embarrassing and has only diverted the focus of the PDP from the welfare of the Nigerian people. “If the special committee established by the president to address the current crisis does not include representatives from various factions and the founding fathers, it will fail to create a sustainable solution,” he said.

Married Man Dies After Sex With Lover In Asaba Hotel

An attempt by a married man to play a fast game by having sex with a lover ended on a sad note in Asaba, Delta State as he reportedly lost his life after a sex session in hotel. The Lagos State-based man ( names withheld), was said to have woken up on June 5 2013, at his home in Lagos. He bade his family bye and travelled to Asaba, Delta State where he was to attend a court proceeding the following morning. Reports had it that he was also in the company of his twin brother but later died same day at about 11:30 p.m. while allegedly frolicking with a woman of easy virtue. The deceased reportedly checked into a hotel along Ezenei road in the business district of Asaba at about 4p.m. preparing for a court session the following day. Late in the evening, the man reportedly decided to seek the company of a girl, said to be a commercial sex worker. It was further gathered that the man left the hotel in the evening and later came back with the girl in company of some of his friends, including his twin brother. The man’s lawyers were also around. They all were in the bar enjoying themselves until at about 10p.m. when he went to his room with the girl. The girl was said to have returned to the bar shortly after, trembling, as she told others: “I don’t know what is happening to your brother, make una come see am”. At that point, the twin brother and others, including the hotel’s authority followed the girl back to the hotel room, only to meet the man, totally naked and on the ground, struggling for air. Evidence that sex took place was also visible as a used condom was reportedly seen on the floor. The friends quickly took the man to an undisclosed hospital where he reportedly died at about 11.pm. The news of the man’s death filtered into the hotel and instantly the police who were invited, arrested the girl and the bar man, but they were later released on bail. Answering Crime Reports’ questions, the Administration Manager of the hotel who spoke under anonymity said that: “We had to report the matter to the police because we could not remove his things in the chalet since he was a guest here, though he died outside the hotel. Good enough, the girl did not escape when the man was naked on the floor. Probably if she had done that, the man would have died inside the room and that would have put us in trouble.” Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Lucky Uyabeme, said police investigation was in progress as the command would await the autopsy result. “We are waiting for the autopsy report to know exactly what killed the man but the corpse has been released to the family”, ASP Uyabeme said. Sometime ago, a top government official in Delta State died in a popular hotel in Asaba while having sex in a hot afternoon with a girl who was to wed her groom same week.
