Video: Highlight of Namibia vs Nigeria Match

African champions, the Super Eagles of Nigeria failed Wednesday to reach the final round of 2014 World Cup qualifiers in Africa after a 1-1 draw in Namibia.

The African champions needed a win in Windhoek to take an unassailable four-point Group F lead with one game to spare.

But the ‘Super Eagles’ had to settle for a point when Godfrey Oboabona equalised seven minutes from time at Sam Nujoma Stadium.

Deon Hotto Kavendji had put the ‘Brave Warriors’ ahead on 77 minutes as they threatened to avenge a 1-0 loss in Calabar last June.

A draw was a satisfactory result for Namibia, ranked 30 places below Nigeria in Africa by FIFA, given the chaotic build-up to the qualifier.

Swede Roger Palmgren quit as coach Monday after unspecified death threats, leaving assistants Ricardo Mannetti and Ronnie Kanolelo 48 hours to prepare.

Nigeria have nine points after five rounds, Malawi seven, Namibia five and winless Kenya prop up the table with just three points.

So the September clash of Nigeria and Malawi becomes a group decider with the ‘Eagles’ needing a draw and the ‘Flames’ a win to finish on top.

Nigeria now switch attention to the Confederations Cup in Brazil — they face Tahiti on June 17 in Group B followed by Uruguay and world champions Spain.

Malawi were held 2-2 by Kenya in Blantyre earlier Wednesday — a result which opened the door for Nigeria to seal first place.

The ‘Flames’ led twice at Kamuzu Stadium only for the ‘Harambee Stars’ to get a last-minute reprieve when Chimango Kayira scored an own goal.

Striker Robin Ngalande put the home team ahead a minute into the second half on an artificial pitch and midfielder Jamal Mohamed levelled soon after.

A goal from veteran midfielder Robert Ng’ambi 10 minutes before time offered Malawi hope of a rare home win only for substitute Kayira to blunder.

The sole Malawian victory in five mini-league qualifiers was away to Namibia three months ago with all three home games drawn.

Riot at University of Uyo leaves one student dead

The Engineering students of the University of Uyo this afternoon went for a peaceful demonstration to the office of the school's Vice Chancellor, Prof Comfort Ekpo, after the VC mandated students to pay N100 for the school bus which used to be free. The school management had shifted most of the Science student courses to the school's permanent site which is about 20 minutes drive from the main campus, and then made the shuttle N100. That means students will have to pay N200 to and fro everyday to the permanent campus for most of their lectures.

This was what the students were protesting this afternoon when things went crazy. The peaceful protest turned violent after security officials at the V.C's office tried to stop the students from gaining access to the Vice Chancellor.

The students allegedly retaliated by throwing stones at the security officials, who then called for police back-up which led to the riot. The police arrived the scene and aggravated the situation by firing shots at the students, killing at least one student. Some say two. Some say three.

Angry students now proceeded to burn down the VC's office, the exams and records building, and a security office. Students have been evacuated from the hostel, and the school has been shut down indefinitely.

We Prefer Live Human Beings Because They Are Cheaper – Suspected Human Parts Dealer

The suspected human parts dealers
The suspected human parts dealers

Operatives of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS, Ikeja have arrested three fleeing members of a syndicate who allegedly specialized in selling live humans and decomposing human parts for money rituals.

Their arrest came barely three weeks after some of their members were paraded at the Lagos State
Police Command, where they confessed to have sold live human beings for N40,000, hands—N4,000 and head—N8,000.

Those recently arrested are Gazali Akewadola (60), the native doctor who allegedly offered N40,000 for a live human being, Alfa Taofeek Akinola (35) and Kazeem Sanni (25).
To the bewilderment of all, Gazali confessed that live human beings were cheaper than buying dead human parts, saying all parts of a live human being are vital in the preparation of money ritual.

For instance, he said a life human being was bought for N40,000, “but at the end of the day, you get a lot of expensive parts from it. Aside that, it is even more potent because the efficacy of the charm or concoction prepared with live human parts cannot be compared with the ones prepared with dead parts.

“When a life human being is killed, one will get fresh blood which is used in preparing some charms. The same body will also give you hairs from private part, head and some mustache which are used for other ritual purposes. The private part is also very useful for the preparation of effective concoction. The head, flesh intestines, liver, heart, eyes, lips and tongues can be used for pepper soup which is usually very delicious than that of animal meat. I usually take the pepper soup so as to assure those who patronize us that it is not harmful. It also fortifies one spiritually.

“If you buy a full human being for N30,000 or N40,000 and pieces it, you will end up getting N100,000 or more because you will get more than 10 parts that will yield more money for you.”
Gazali who hails from Folahan, Ado-Odo in Owode Yewa Local Government Area of Ogun State, further said: “I am an Islamic teacher and a cleric. I own an Islamic school in Owode Yewa. I am also married with eight children. I am also a native doctor. I cure people of their ailments and help those who want to get rich quick, by using human parts to prepare charms and concoctions for them.
We use soft bones to cure epilepsy

“Most of the human parts I bought were sold to me by Kazeem Sanni. He used to sell dead human head between N3,000 and N8000, depending on the market price. The soft bones that can easily be grinded into powder are very cheap. It is just for N1,000. It is used to cure ailments like epilepsy.”

Asked why he did not use any of his children since he has eight of them, he said that would reduce the potency of the ritual concoction, adding that its potency depended solely on strangers being used.

He said their victims were usually abducted from Lagos State and beyond, with the use of charms.

He further disclosed that aside the N40,000 paid to Sanni to get him a live human being, he gave him another N5,000 and a charm to hypnotize the male victims. But he said the plan almost failed as Sanni was almost caught. He, however, expressed regrets that despite the use of human parts to make other people rich, he ended up not only being poor but arrested along the line.
Money ritual charm changed my level

The second suspect, Alfa Taofeek, who is also an indigene of Owode Yewa in Ogun State confessed to have bought a human head from the third suspect, Kazeem, which he grinded and mixed with local gin.

According to him, “it was to enable me get rich. I am a Muslim cleric and I have been making people rich through this means but became jealous at a point and decided to get rich as well, since I was unable to get enough money from my clients.

“After drinking the concoction prepared with a human head, I got more customers and made more money. I even threw parties on a monthly basis to celebrate my new level.

“I also used part of the money to sponsor the graduation ceremony of some of my students in the Islamic school known as Alfa Taofeek Islamic School, at Owode Yewa.”
Customs officers lured me into money rituals

On his part, the third suspect, Kazeem Sanni, claimed to have opted for the money ritual business due to frustration from Customs men.

He said: “At a point, business was no longer moving because Customs men at the border were always seizing the goods, at the end of which their owners would force me to pay for them. I became frustrated even contemplated selling my father’s landed property. I decided to consult Alfa Taokeek Akinola to find out the cause of my predicament. He instructed me to get a human head in order to be rich. After that, he requested a live human being. I attempted kidnapping someone so that I can cut off his head but it was not possible. He then instructed me to exhume dead body from the graves which I did and got him three at the rate of N3,000 each.”

Their arrest, as explained by spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ngozi Braide, was in compliance with the Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko’s directive to SARS Commander, Abba Kyari, to get the fleeing suspects, after the arrest of three members of the syndicate on May 15, 2013, with human parts

Out of the closet: Gay protesters disrupt trial of alleged homosexuals in Anambra

Gay rights activists and members of the gay community have protested the arraignment of two men accused of being in a same sex relationship in Anambra State.

On Wednesday, protesters interrupted court proceedings at the Atani Chief Magistrate’s Court at about 9am to support the accused men who were arrested by the state police command.

According to reports, they sang anti-police and court songs saying their fundamental human rights should not be oppressed demanding the unconditional release of the two accused men.

They reported vowed to continue to fight for their rights despite the move by the National Assembly to criminalize their relationships.

The Punch reports:
A large number of them came to the court with femine outlook to the surprise of the people around.
However, the two accused persons, whose identities could not immediately be confirmed, were later remanded in prison, as the magistrate’s court said it had no jurisdiction to try the matter.

On Monday after school hours, a school principal in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti state was found in a bush reportedly having sex with an 11-year-old pupil of his school.

Ekiti State command’s Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Babayemi confirmed the reports as true saying the school principal, Tunde Ibitoye had been arrested for “defiling an 11-year-old pupil,” and was currently being interrogated by the police.

The girl also told police investigators that it was the fourth time it had happened.
Ibitoye was caught in his act on Wednesday. Combining reports claim that the proprietor offered a lift to the girl and another pupil of the private Nursery and Primary School and was taking them home when he stopped at a deserted place and went into the bush pretending to be defecating.

An eyewitness, Kayode Ayeni who was close by at the time said he became very curious after he heard Ibitoye calling to the girl to bring him tissue paper to clean up and she went into the bush.
Ayeni said he decided to following her after a while when she had not returned and that was how he caught Ibitoye half-naked and the girl also undressed having sex.

Immediately Ayeni and Ibitoye began arguing drawing the attention of other people around including residents of Agric Olope area of Ado Ekiti.

He was reportedly beaten up and almost killed but was spared as soon as the police arrived.

The Punch reports:
The policemen, who stormed the scene dispersed the crowd and took the suspect away.
He also said the girl’s father told the police that there was a time he noticed blood stain on his daughter’s clothes but the man thought it was early menstruation.
The proprietor, however, insisted that he did not have sex with the girl but was just assisting her home after the school hours.
But Babayemi said the girl had been taken to a hospital for medical examination, saying the result would be made public when it was out.
Babayemi said, “There is a man in our custody who was said to be caught while having sex with an 11-year-old pupil. The girl has been taken to hospital for examination and we are expecting the result.
“We are investigating to see if we can find other girls who the man might have defiled. If we find any, it would further corroborate the allegation. But we advise parents to alway ensure that their children are put in custody of responsible people.”

Nigerian Oil Tycoon Loses £17.5m Divorce Settlement to his British Wife

Culled from Dailymail:

Nigerian oil tycoon, Michael Prest, 51, lost a legal fight with his estranged English wife today in a landmark court case over a £17.5m divorce settlement. The Supreme Court ruled that properties owned by Michael’s companies did count as his, and therefore should be counted as his assets in the high-profile divorce battle between him and ex-wife Yasmin, 50.

Lawyers say the decision, which overturned an earlier Appeal Court ruling that Mr Prest's companies could not be taken into account when calculating the divorce payout, could have significant implications for divorcing couples.

This morning's Supreme Court judgment, which followed a hearing in London in March, was the latest round of a lengthy legal battle between the couple, who married in 1993 and spent most of their time in their £5m matrimonial home in London's Maida Vale.

Mrs Prest, who has four children by her ex-husband, said after the decision was announced: 'I'm delighted and relieved that the Supreme Court has ruled as it did.
'I'm grateful to the judges for the care and thought they gave the case.  It is more a case of satisfaction and relief than celebration.
'None of this would have been necessary if Michael had been sensible and played fair.'

In October, the Court of Appeal ruled that Mr Prest did not have to hand property worth millions of pounds to Mrs Prest. Appeal judges concluded that a High Court judge had earlier wrongly ordered Mr Prest, who is now based in Monaco, to transfer properties held in the names of offshore companies he controlled.

Their decision came after Mr Prest claimed that the millions of pounds held in cash and property by companies he owned did not count as his assets. Mrs Prest then asked the Supreme Court - the highest court in the UK - to analyse the case.

Judges heard that the couple, who married in 1993, spent most of their time in London, had properties in Nigeria and the Caribbean and lived to a 'very high standard'. They were told that Mr Prest claimed to be worth about £48m, but Mrs Prest said he was worth 'tens if not hundreds of millions' of pounds.

Mr Prest, who now faces having to pay an estimated £3m legal bill, was not in court to hear the judgement as seven Supreme Court justices unanimously allowed Mrs Prest’s appeal today.

Supreme Court President Lord Neuberger, and Lords Sumption, Clarke, Mance, Wilson and Walker and Lady Hale said that the companies were held in trust for the husband and became family property.
They ruled that under English law in certain circumstances the courts can 'disregard' and 'pierce the corporate veil' in order to reach the assets.

They concluded that seven properties held by Mr Prest’s Petrodel Group were properties to which he was 'entitled' - even if he did not own them personally -  and therefore should be counted as assets in the couple's divorce.

However justice Lord Sumption warned that it was not possible to generalise about whether a company's owner was always entitled to its assets.

He said: 'Whether assets legally vested in a company are beneficially owned by its controller is a high fact-specific issue. 'It is not possible to give general guidance.'

He said judges were sometimes entitled to ask whether 'terms' were really what they were said to be or 'simply a sham'.

City and Arsenal on alert with Milan ready to cash in on El Shaarawy

Manchester City’s pursuit of youngster Stephan El Shaarawy may be back on after AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani indicated that the club may cash in on the Italian. The forward, 20, recently said that he was flattered to be linked with the Premier League club, but that he was happy at Milan for the time being. Galliani’s quotes have also opened the door for fellow Serie A side Napoli, and it could also mean a swap deal with City involving Carlos Tevez, who is widely tipped to make the move to Italy this summer. Last season El Shaarawy established himself as a regular at the Rossoneri for the first time since his move from Genoa in 2011, scoring 16 goals, and is regarded as a great prospect in his homeland. His performances have also seen him gain recognition from the national team, making his first cap last October. Galliani yesterday denied that the club had received an offer from City, but has now said that El Shaarawy may not necessarily stay at the San Siro, and pointed to Napoli as a possible destination.  ‘El Shaarawy? We never said he is not for sale,’ the vice-president told Corriere dello Sport. ‘Napoli? Ask the president Aurelio De Laurentiis.’ El Shaarawy’s form in the last campaign dipped slightly upon the arrival of former City player Mario Balotelli in January, but is one of the strikers on a wishlist to replace the void the 22-year-old left at the Etihad this summer. Also linked with a move as soon-to-be boss Manuel Pellegrini sets out to rejuvenate the side are Edinson Cavani and Robert Lewandowski, while Tevez is expected to move on. It is believed that the Argentinian wants a move to either Milan or Serie A champions Juventus, as he looks to put a turbulent spell in Manchester behind him.

Clive Allen joined Arsenal for £1.25m.

Thirty three years ago, Clive Allen joined Arsenal for £1.25m... two months later he left without playing a competitive game Just 16 months after Trevor Francis had shocked the world of football by becoming the first million pound player, another record was broken - when the first seven-figure transfer involving a teenager was struck. Queens Park Rangers forward Clive Allen was the youngster who, while still aged only 19, commanded a £1.25 million fee as he moved to Arsenal, 33 years ago on Wednesday. For a club that was trying to lift itself back up following the blows of losing the FA Cup final to West Ham and Cup-Winners' Cup to Valencia, it was seen as a major coup, particularly as the fulcrum of the side - Liam Brady - was set for a move to Juventus. But if manager Terry Neill wanted to put a smile on the faces of those Gunners fans with such an audacious move for a striker who had bagged 32 goals in 49 appearances at Loftus Road, they were soon replaced by looks of total bemusement. After three appearances in Arsenal's warm-up games - with a goal return of precisely nil - the teenage marksman was on his way out - to Crystal Palace in a swap deal involving Kenny Sansom and keeper Paul Barron. It was one of the most bizarre transfers in history. And certainly up there with other short-lived moves. David Unsworth's £3m move to Aston Villa lasted just 48 hours and was blamed upon the defender not knowing the location of Villa Park, according to manager John Gregory. Unsworth happily re-joined Everton instead. And Sol Campbell's brief spell at Notts County was over after just one appearance, the England centre half complaining that the League Two club had 'broken promises' made to him. But even that pales into insignificance when Didi Hamann's move to Bolton Wanderers is taken into account. The German had signed a pre-contract agreement with the Trotters after his contract with Liverpool came to an end but asked to move to Manchester City instead... his time at the Reebok amounting to little more than 24 hours. As it was, Allen moved on just two months after joining Arsenal. The theory at the time was that Eagles boss Terry Venables had a hand in engineering the whole move. The suggestion was that Palace wanted Allen but QPR wouldn't sell to them and weren't interested in a swap deal with Kenny Sansom. Arsenal did have cash to spend but were interested in the Palace left back - and so a complicated three-way move was orchestrated. Allen is later quoted as saying: 'Several different theories were put forward. There was no foundation to any of them but it was quite an experience to be involved in. 'I mean, if Arsenal wanted Kenny, why didn't they just buy him from Palace?' It is more likely that Neill bought Allen in good faith and then, having seen the forward first-hand during a couple of pre-season matches, decided that he didn't quite fit the bill and looked for a solution to his problem, finding one in a swap deal. Whatever the true story, it remains one of the most bizarre stories in English football history. P.S. Allen spent just a single season at Crystal Palace before returning to QPR. He then joined Arsenal's north London rivals Tottenham where he scored a stunning 49 goals in the 1986-87 season. He was also named the PFA and the Football Writers' Player of the Year - a feat matched by Spurs' Gareth Bale some 26 years later although the Welshman also won the PFA Young Player of the Year award.

Barcelona striker, Lionel Messi, and his father are reportedly being investigated for tax evasion

Spanish Tax Authorities Investigate Messi for Alleged Tax Evasion Barcelona striker, Lionel Messi, and his father are reportedly being investigated for tax evasion to the tune of 13 million Euros. According to reports, the Argentine and his father Jorge are accused of deliberately concealing commercial revenues from Spanish authorities from 2006 to 2009 by channelling the income through front companies located in tax havens. Barcelona's El Periodico newspaper says the allegation "consisted of simulating the assignment of image rights to front companies based in tax havens [Belize, Uruguay] and, at the same time, formalising contracts of licensing, agency or benefit from services between these companies, and other such instruments domiciled in convenient jurisdictions [the UK, Switzerland]. It added: "This was done with the intended and successful aim that the incomes would move from countries where the companies or entities were based, to companies domiciled in tax havens, without being submitted to any taxation and, furthermore, with total opacity towards the Spanish Tax Authorities. The beneficiary of these incomes was no other than the person served - Lionel A. Messi." Meanwhile, Messi has responded to the tax evasion allegations via Facebook. Expressing surprise at the allegation, the goal poacher and four-time Ballon d'Or winner said: "We have just known through the media about the claim filed by the Spanish tax authorities. We are surprised about this news, because we have never committed any infringement. We have always fulfilled all our tax obligations, following the advise of our Tax Consultants who will take care of clarifying this situation." According to Forbes, Messi is the 10th highest-paid athlete in the world, earning around $41.3 million per year. Only David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo have higher yearly earnings in the sport of soccer.

Highlife music veteran, Fatai Rolling Dollar is dead at 85. The
octogenarian passed on this morning at Ahmadiyya Hospital in Abule
Egba, Lagos, southwest Nigeria. He was rushed to the hospital by his
wife about a week ago.

Kunle Tejuosho, whose label, Jazzhole Records, brought out 'Won Kere
Si Number Wa' among other albums, confirmed his death. He said the
deceased came back from America some weeks ago where he had gone for
shows for about three weeks.

Tejuosho in his tribute, said: "Baba was a great Musician. He lived
life of a music. He was always happy to perform. May be he took too
much on.

"He was a good guy. He enjoyed his life. He had a second chance which
he used very well.
"He would be missed because he brought the past alive to the present.
He re-lived the music of the 50s. He was a great music historian and a
great music custodian."

Yomi Opakunle, his former manager, also confirmed the death. He
however said the deceased may be buried today.

Rolling Dollar was known for his verve and dexterity on the guitar.
His zest for life and energy, even in old age, was also a marvel to
all who beheld him while performing.

After decades of struggling to make ends meet and musical doldrums,
Rolling Dollar got a new lease of life after the French Cultural
Centre brought him back into public consciousness.
He later got a higher lift through Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, while as
Lagos State governor.
The late musician was given a house in one of the low cost housing
estates in New Oko Oba, Lagos.

Juju music legend, Ebenezer Obey was among those trained by the late musician.
As a pioneer Juju music player, Rolling Dollar clarified in an
interview how juju music derived its name.

"It was derived from the tambourine which is one of the key
instruments used to play it. When they play it on the street they
would shout 'Ju so ke'. They would then throw the tambourine up and
shake it. … shukushuku. That was how juju got its name and not from
bad medicine and all that. Even though in Saro land the word was taken
to mean bad medicine. But here in Lagos our juju meant music. In juju
then, we had the guitar, agidigbo, samba, sekere and at times we used
the bottle to give us that clave sound. In fact, white people invented
the clave from our bottle sound. That is where they got the idea for
it," he said.

Doctors Use Superglue To Stop Bleeding From Brain Of Baby

The unbelievable happened at the University of Kansas Hospital when doctors had to apply superglue to stop the bleeding from the brain of a baby to save her life during an emergency surgery after it was discovered that Baby Ashlyn Julian was suffering from brain aneurysm. The baby was discovered to be bleeding from two places. The mother said she observed that baby Ashyln was not her usually self as she kept screaming and didn’t respond well to care as opposed to her quietness. “She has an aneurysm and it’s already haemorrhaged, and that’s just frightening,” Gina recalled. Ashlyn had suffered from a stroke and bled from two places after having an aneurysm in the brain, a rare condition for babies under 28 days. The Endovascular Neurosurgeon Dr. Koji Ebersole of the University hospital decided against cutting into the baby’s brain as every drop of blood is crucial in infants. Also, the condition in babies this age is so rare that tiny tools do not exist to perform the surgery. The decision was made to use a sterile drop of superglue to fix the aneurysm. Dr. Alan Reeves, an interventional neuroradiologist, placed a catheter in the baby’s body, entering at the hip, and then Ebersole was able to drop in the superglue and it did the magic and it is expected that Ashlyn will make a full recovery as her brain was not fully developed.

World Bank Indicts Jonathan’s Government, Says Massive Poverty, Unemployment Killing Nigerians

The number of Nigerians living in poverty is increasing significantly,
the World Bank says.

The number of Nigerians living in poverty is increasing significantly,
revealing a perplexing contrast between the nation's economic
statistics on rapid economic growth and minimal welfare improvements
for much of the population, the World Bank has said.
"Poverty rates remain high in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas.
These rates declined between 2003-2004 and 2009- 2010, although not
nearly as fast as would be expected from the pace of economic growth
in the country," the World Bank said in its 'Nigeria Economic Report'
May, 2013.

"While the officially reported growth rates of GDP well exceed
population growth in the country, the pace of poverty reduction does
not, this implies that the number of poor Nigerians living below the
poverty line has grown measurably," the report stated.

The World Bank said the first Nigeria Economic Report is designed to
give some attention to longer term trends in the country, including
the puzzle of why a decade of rapid GDP growth by official statistics,
concentrated in the pro-poor areas of agriculture and trade, did not
bring stronger welfare and employment benefits to the population.

Aside from the increase in poverty, the organisation said progress
towards a number of the other Millennium Development Goals in Nigeria
has also been disappointing, stating that Nigeria was ranked 153 out
of 186 countries in the 2013 United Nations Human Development Index,
as unemployment rates have been steadily increasing and younger
Nigerians are encountering increasing difficulty in finding gainful
employment.

The organisation said available data on unemployment suggest a similar story.
"Job creation in Nigeria has been inadequate to keep pace with the
expanding working age population. The official unemployment rate has
steadily increased from 12% of the working age population in 2006 to
24% in 2011. Preliminary indications are that this upward trend
continued in 2012.

Another issue the report highlighted was that the official definition
of employment in Nigeria (less than 40 hours worked in the past week)
is unusual, and is therefore not comparable to that in most other
countries. The negative dynamic is very consistent, however, with
perceptions of the population of increasing difficulties for finding
gainful employment. Going by this, the problem in Nigeria might best
be interpreted as underemployment in contrast to unemployment proper.

Variance in reported statistics and reality

Reports over the recent years have continued to highlight the concern
that the Nigerian economic statistics reveals a puzzling contrast
between rapid economic growth and quite minimal welfare improvements
for much of the population.

Nigeria's annual growth rates that average over 7 per cent in official
data during the last decade place the nation among the fastest growing
economies in the world. This growth has been concentrated particularly
in trade and agriculture, which would suggest substantial welfare
benefits for many Nigerians.

"Nevertheless, improvements in social welfare indicators have been
much slower than would be expected in the context of this growth.
Poverty reduction and job creation have not kept pace with population
growth, implying social distress for an increasing number of
Nigerians. Progress toward the fulfillment of many of the Millennium
Development Goals has been slow, and the country ranked 153 out of 186
countries in the 2013 United Nations Human Development Index" the
World Bank said.

The Organisation said further data collection and investigations will
be necessary to clarify this picture of what factors are responsible
or explain the disparities between economic growth and the welfare
indicators of the nation.

"Given the seeming inconsistencies between the national accounts data
summarized above and statistics based on other surveys, it is
imperative to conduct further investigations and statistical tests to
uncover the true growth and development story in Nigeria" the World
Bank said.

Against this backdrop, the World Bank said it is imperative that
Nigeria finds a recipe to unlock rapid growth and job creation in a
larger part of the country, as well as to increase standards of
education, health, and other social services to enable its citizens to
find gainful employment in the emerging growth poles.

"In sum, statistics on poverty and unemployment in Nigeria, together
with other direct indicators of welfare, suggest a story that is
rather different from the national accounts data. GDP growth has not
been sufficient to support levels of poverty reduction and job
creation necessary to prevent a growing number of poor and unemployed
(underemployed) Nigerians."
Despite the challenges, the World Bank states that the macroeconomic
outlook for Nigeria in 2013 appears fairly strong, assuming that oil
prices do not decline sharply and oil output stabilizes. The foreign
inflows that generated the balance of payments surplus and reserve
accumulation should continue, and will stimulate domestic demand. In
this context, particularly if there are better weather conditions in
2013, the pace of economic growth could accelerate somewhat.

"Overall, 2013 should provide a favourable context for the realization
of key reforms and investments (power, roads, business climate,
education, health, agriculture) that could generate the non-oil
growth, productivity increases, and jobs needed to ensure the
country's prosperous future".

The Jonathan administration has increasingly made reference to
Nigeria's GDP and economic growth as signs of successes while the
opposition and several Nigerians lament that those growth have not had
a corresponding effect on the lives of average Nigerians

TRUTH OF THE MATTER! How M.K.O Abiola Really Died – His Personal Doctor Reveals

This is the first time a detailed analysis of the issues leading to the June 12, 1993, election and detention and subsequent controversial death of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola, winner of the election, is outlined by an insider who is very close to both Abiola and late Sani Abacha to know the secret details.
Below is Dr Ore Falomo, Abiola's personal physician's exposé in a recent interview with Punch. It is a must read...
Can you recall your last meeting with M.K.O Abiola. When was it, and what was the state of his health?
It was about two weeks before he died. But the visit before the last was more remarkable. It was arranged by the military government to dispel the rumour that Abiola had died in detention. They quickly arranged a meeting for me to go and see him. They sent one captain from Aso Rock to me to tell me that I was needed urgently in Aso Rock. This was the penultimate meeting to the last meeting with him. I found the message strange because my previous meetings were arranged by the commissioner of police in Abuja, under whom Abiola was supposed to be. Whenever I visited him, I usually returned to Lagos by 6pm, but that day, it was not possible because immediately I got into the car, they started driving round Abuja to waste time so that it would be dark and I won’t recognise where they were taking me to.

When we got to the place, Abiola was there. It was a new place; I had not seen him there before. It was a bungalow. As soon as they opened the door and Abiola saw me, he came towards me and we hugged. We sat and unlike before, none of the guards waited to listen to our discussion. We spoke Yoruba all the time. They objected to it at first, later on they agreed. That day he was behaving like he was in the spirit. I told him there was a rumour that he had been killed. He said, ‘I know that I’m dead. They have dug the grave. They have put me in the grave except that they have not close me up.’ I asked, ‘What happened? Have they injured you or injected you?’ He said no, but that he just knew.

That means he had the premonition that he was going to die in detention.
Yes. As he was talking, his mood changed. He told me he had forgiven those who caused his incarceration; that it was left for them to ask for forgiveness from God. He said he forgave them because he wants God to forgive him his sins. All these were strange, because in my previous visits, he was always asking about the things that were happening in the country. Then he started singing, ‘Nearer my God to thee, nearer to thee.’ He used to sing Christian songs. After signing the song in English, he started singing it in Yoruba. Then he got up; hugged me and we began to cry. It was very emotional. I tried to calm him down, because I didn’t know what he had seen. All through this period, the guards did not come to say time was up. I told him I will tell the story to the people, which was normal after every visit.

But did you observe any sign or symptoms of illness in him?
No. He was neither sick nor injured. You could say his spirit was low, but his body was good. There were no signs and symptoms of any illness. He spoke from a very conscious mind. That was the most poignant visit. The last visit was routine; to change his toiletries and so on.

The then Commonwealth Secretary-General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku, recently told us that when he visited Abiola few days to his death, he was in high spirits, because he was happily awaiting his release. How did he overcome the depression?About two weeks to Abiola’s death, Abdulsalami Abubakar had started to send out word that Abiola might be released. So, the whole town started to rejoice. I don’t know how that one was done. They even got to me and said my trips to Abuja would soon end. I knew the government was not going to try him. Chief Rotimi Williams had already told us that they did not have any evidence against him. There was no point going to court. As far as I knew, Abiola knew that they would not allow him to come out just like that since they would not take him to court. Every time, they were asking him to denounce his mandate and prepare himself for another election, but he refused. During my last visit, I told him I had the rumour that Abubakar will release him but I did not want him to believe the rumour until there was concrete evidence.

How did you receive the news of his death?
That day, I was in the sitting room here. A call came from the personal physician of Abubakar. He said, ‘Doctor, get yourself ready and start coming to Abuja. The Head of State has sent his personal jet through Governor Buba Marwa, it would be at the VIP section of the airport.’ Of course, I was not going to enter that aircraft. But I asked him, ‘Why are you sending for me? I was given about two weeks appointment to come and see Abiola, so tell me what has happened that warrants me to come urgently.’ He didn’t want to tell me that Abiola had died, so that my reaction would not be, ‘Alright if you have killed him; eat him. I’m not the doctor for the dead, but for the living.’ That could have been my reaction, which was exactly my reaction when I finally learnt that he had died. After that, I called Kola Abiola and told him that something bad had happened but that I didn’t know the extent. The doctor also told me not to come alone; that I should bring any of my colleagues. I then thought, maybe he had not died. I told Kola and he said, ‘Doctor let’s go to the airport and take the plane to Abuja.’ I didn’t know Kola had heard. We boarded Kola’s car and he tuned to BBC news. At that time, it was about 15 minutes to 6pm. Then they announced that Abiola had died. I asked Kola, ‘Is that true?’ He wasn’t crying, I knew he had heard. I told him to turn back. And just before we got to Maryland, people had started rioting. We were lucky to escape without the car being damaged.

Did you eventually go to Abuja that day?
I refused to go. When we got back to the house, Kola asked me: ‘What is going to happen next?’ I said, ‘Nothing; I’m not going to Abuja.’ Then he said he must go. I said ‘Yes; go so that you take care of the body. One thing I want you to tell them is that they must not bury him because he is a Muslim. There must be a post-mortem.’ They were already talking to Abiola’s two wives about burying him immediately.
REVELATION!
They arranged for them [the two wives] to come and see Abiola the day before he died. That was of course for them to say goodbye. They did all of these without my knowledge. Up till that time, I was the only one in five years, who was allowed to see Abiola.
Then I received another call. This time, the governor of Lagos, Marwa, said I should come, that the pilot and others were waiting, that he would send a car to pick me. I declined the offer and asked them to wait. I called Prof. Oye Adeniran to represent me. I told him to tell Abubakar’s physician that I want a post-mortem. When the doctor heard my request, he then called me back and said he would advise Abubakar that there must be a post-mortem. Then he said, ‘These are two deaths too many.’ He was referring to the death of Sani Abacha and that of Abiola. You remember in Abacha’s case, there was no post-mortem. How can a Head of State die so suddenly and he was hurriedly buried without a post-mortem. I told him that I would assemble a team of international pathologists to conduct the post-mortem. So, the body was embalmed and kept in the morgue waiting for the pathologists to arrive.

Some said Abiola was beaten to death, others said he was poisoned. As his doctor and member of the team that conducted the post-mortem, what were your findings?Abiola was not beaten. He died shortly after the American delegation got to Aguda House by 3pm. According to the written press conference given by Ambassador Thomas Pickering, who led the American delegation, Abiola died between 3:20 and 3:40pm that day. Nobody told Abiola that he was going to have visitors that day. So, they woke him up and he just brushed his teeth and came out to meet with them. He had not had his lunch. These were facts borne out of the autopsy. His intestine was clear. They exchanged banters, he told Susan Rice, who was part of the delegation, what she wore the first day he met her. Pickering said Abiola’s brain must be sharp to remember all that.
According to them, their mission was to convince Abiola to denounce his mandate and go for another election. By then Abacha had gone, one of their problems had been solved. Abiola was left. They had brought that suggestion before and Abiola rejected it. So, their mission was unnecessary because they were not going to get him to say yes. It must have been for another purpose. When they came in, the chief guard that usually stayed with Abiola was not there because they didn’t tell him some people would be visiting. Abiola came unaccompanied to that meeting. Of course, they had been told he was a tea drinker. They brought a special flask, which Hamza Al-Mustapha described as multi-dimensional. They poured themselves tea and poured tea for Abiola. There was no precedence of a visitor bringing tea for the host. It is unconventional. It is not done anywhere in the world. Not only did they bring it, they offered someone in detention tea, with no guard around.
And Ambassador Pickering said in his press conference that shortly after he had taken the tea, he complained of pain in the chest and grabbed his chest. And later, he felt uncomfortable and then, he went to the convenience to ease himself, but he did not come back as expected. They called on him and he told them he was coming. By then, he had started feeling weak. They asked him if they should call the doctor but he said they should ask the guard to get his pain tablet. But he died before the pain tablet arrived. By the time the doctor came, Abiola had already died. They took him to Aso Rock clinic, where they tried to jerk his heart back to life, but he was gone. That was how he died.

Are you saying that the US had a hand in Abiola’s death?
Yes. It is necessary to note that death followed Pickering’s missions. A notable personality usually dies after his mission to any country. You can go and read about him. The question was: Why did he come? We know him as Central Intelligence Agency man and he was not the serving ambassador in the country then
Abubakar was the one who gave them the appointment. During a cocktail to celebrate the US National Day, I asked the US Ambassador why they brought Pickering and others. I told him that Abacha, who was occupying Abiola’s position had died and why did they bring another military? We should also note that after Abiola died, Abubakar went to White House to visit the sitting American President and he went in military uniform. Can you recollect anybody who entered White House in military uniform? It is not done. He was given that exception. Up till now, nobody has repeated the precedence. What did he do? How long had he been on the throne here that he was received by the American President? Abacha was gone, Abiola was gone and they thought Nigeria’s problem was solved. But here we are.
The current American President has not found it important enough to come to the same country in which the previous governments took very big roles in taking those two actors out. I think it high time US apologised to Nigeria for the roles it played in the death of Abiola. The US also insisted on sending at least two pathologists just to protect its image, because there were rumours that it was the US that killed Abiola. Tony Blair sent a message to me through the British High Commissioner here that he was nominating Dr. John Shepherd, one of the top pathologists in England, and we made him the team captain. Human rights groups from Chicago sent in a pathologist. America insisted that they wanted to be well represented. So, they sent one Muslim doctor and one Christian doctor to me. I was there; Abubakar’s doctor was there; Dr. Coker, the owner of that hospital on Victoria Island was there and the team.

You believe Abiola was poisoned, but how come this team of highly qualified doctors, including yourself conducted the post-mortem and concluded that Abiola died from natural causes? No, what they said was that there was not enough supply of blood to his heart because there was a collection of fatty materials in the blood vessels that supply blood to the heart. His heart did not get blood supply; that was why he died eventually. The question is, why did that happen? How could that happen to somebody who just woke up, had not done anything and was not doing any exercise. There are people who have worse conditions than that and they are still alive. Something must have engineered the heart to behave the way it did that Abiola could not survive more than 10 minutes. We took specimen from his intestine, took his blood and sent it to toxicologists in Canada and in London.
Another question to ask was where did Pickering type his press statement? Abiola died around 3:40pm and by 4pm, Pickering read his typed-written press statement and said he must have died of heart attack. The doctor that took Abiola’s body to Aso Rock clinic had not come when Pickering addressed the press. Could something have triggered the heart attack? The answer is yes. We also know that there are drugs that can affect the rhythm of the heart. Such drugs can disturb the rhythm of the heart to an extent that the heart can stop pumping blood. If you give it to anyone to drink in tablet or liquid form, it can make the heart to stop within minutes. Does this leave traces in the blood? Yes, because medical science has perfected all that now. They just conducted the post-mortem of Yasser Arafat, the Palestinian man that died about five years ago. When he died, nobody suspected, but now they believe he was poisoned and they are trying to find out what type of poison it was.

So, you believe medical science can detect the poison now?
Yes, and that is why we are calling for a more detailed investigation into the cause of Abiola’s death. Why are the human rights activists here not pushing for further investigation into Abiola’s death? Our government did not even want to say that the man won the election, until President Goodluck Jonathan came.

But did Abiola have any health condition that could have resulted to sudden death?
Tell me who had a better health than Abiola. Before he was detained, Abiola was a globetrotter. If not because he was very healthy, he wouldn’t have lasted five years in detention. He was not exercising, not seeing people and so on. They even tried to injure him once in the office of the Commissioner of Police in Abuja. A police officer that came from Aso Rock threw Abiola against a pillar and he hit his back and his spinal cord protruded. We gave Abiola a newspaper, and the policeman wanted collect it from him, but he refused. Then we looked for CT scan and there was none in Nigeria but Abacha was ready to let him go abroad for treatment. But many people feared that if he left, they would not have allowed him back into the country. This was because he had gone once and the then interim President Ernest Shonekan, did not allow him back into the country. It was the same Abacha that ensured that Abiola returned. Abacha had to change the guards at the airport, replaced them with his own guards and asked them to fly Abiola in from Cotonou. I was close to Abacha to know all these. Abiola landed and trouble started. Then there was the afternoon coup, Abacha took over from Shonekan. As far as Abacha was concerned, his reign was not to be permanent, he had to remove Shonekan to foil Ibrahim Babangida’s plan to come back. Babangida’s intention was to transform into a civilian president.

If Abacha was not interested in ruling for long, why didn’t he install Abiola when he got to Aso Rock?
When Abacha got to Aso Rock, he called Oladipo Diya and some other people to go around and feel the pulse of the people. Diya was here in my hospital, he went to Gani Fawehinmi; he went to the Oba of Lagos, Oba of Benin and the Ooni of Ife. All these people told him to tell Abacha to install Abiola. Diya went back and told Abacha to discard those views; that no military man takes power and hands it over to civilians. Remember Abacha did not get out of Aso Rock till he died. He was a soldier to the core. He didn’t know how to play politics. One of the reasons that military did not want to leave Nigeria’s political life was that Abiola told them that he will probe all of them, when he became president.

Don’t you think Abacha would have killed Abiola to pave the way for himself becoming a civilian president?
Abacha would not have killed Abiola. He never wanted Abiola dead. Abacha never wanted any of these people’s death. The death of Shehu Yar’adua, was carried out by Abacha’s chronic cohorts. They were going to do the same thing to Obasanjo. When we heard, we sent a message down to the doctor and person in-charge of the prison in Plateau, that they were coming to inject Obasanjo. At that time, they were removing people who would constitute a hindrance to the five parties that were to endorse Abacha. What would it cost Abacha to kill Diya, Olanrewaju, Adisa and others who plotted the coup? It would not take five minutes. Is it not strange the deaths recorded under Abacha were civilians and not soldiers?

Being Abiola’s confidant, one wonders how you were that close to Abacha.
I met Abacha in 1982. He was a brigadier in the Nigerian Army. He was coming back from Lebanon as the head of a peace-keeping mission. I had a friend called U.S. Yaro. He was a general in the Nigerian Army. He brought his third wife to me, I treated her, she became pregnant and she delivered a male baby which was what he was looking for. So, you can imagine the joy. He thought I was the best gynaecologist in the whole world. We became very close. This Gen. U. S. Yaro belonged to the right group in the Army. He was then made defence adviser in London and he went with his wife and baby. He told me, ‘Anytime you are in London call, you must see this baby grow.’ I went to London on holiday, I called him and he said, ‘There is somebody I want you to meet. He has just arrived from Lebanon.’ He knew that man was going to become somebody in Nigeria. I had never been a friend of the Army. I’ve been fighting them from the time I came back from England in 1970 as a doctor. We fought all of them except Muritala Mohammed, because he had settled problems between doctors and Gen. Yakubu Gowon. So, when he (Mohammed) became Head of State, he knew what doctors wanted. We were not asking for increase in salary, we wanted them to build a good health system, especially after the civil war ravaged parts of the country.
Yaro sent a car to take me to where he was hosting the Nigerian contingent led by Abacha. When I met Abacha, he promised to visit me in Nigeria the day after he arrived. Coincidentally, we flew the same plane from London to Lagos and he spoke to me about himself all thorough that journey and the next day, he showed up at my door as he promised. I was very happy to have known Abacha. He was a truthful and straightforward person. If he did something, he would never deny it. He would not tell a lie. He had a list of friends. I was his number two Christian friend. We were not up to 12 on that list. To underscore how crude but genuine he was, he was taking money directly from the treasury to Aso Rock. He didn’t how to make money through contracts and things like that. And he kept the records. I had a lot of personal experiences with him. His wife delivered their last child here; a girl. I was the first to tell him his wife was pregnant, they were not expecting it. Abiola knew I was close to Abacha; there was no hiding.

But for the role you said Diya played, do you think Abacha would have installed Abiola as President?
I believe that. Let me tell you this. The first coup against Shonekan was planned for the Saturday preceding the Wednesday that he was toppled. It was supposed to be bloodless. Why would Abacha do a coup, when he was the most senior officer in a military regime that had not handed over power? He was the defacto leader. Abacha planned that coup and the plot was leaked to Shonekan. Shonekan was to be in Abeokuta for that weekend until Monday and was to be arrested there. Some of us, including Abiola, knew about that coup. And the idea was for Abacha to take over and eventually install Abiola.

When that coup was foiled, we were sad. Abacha then planned it his own way and made it happen on Wednesday when they usually had their weekly Supreme Military Council meeting. At the meeting, Abacha just walked in with Gwadabe and Gen. Mohammed. He knew Gen. Mohammed was the one who leaked it, but he didn’t want to cause an uproar in the country. He told Shonekan to write his resignation. Shonekan asked ‘Why should I resign?’ Abacha asked him, ‘Who are you waiting for to obey my instruction? Here is the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Mohammed; here is Col. Gwadabe, here is Col. Aminu.’ Abacha pulled out his pistol and then Shonekan’s personal assistant, Isaac, who told me the story, said he quickly wrote the resignation letter for Shonekan to sign. He wrote it; it was typed and Shonekan signed. Abacha told Shonekan that a car was waiting for him outside, he should board it to the airport and fly to Lagos. Abacha then went into the plane with Gen. Mohammed and told him that if not for their friendship, he would have blown up his head for what he did. Because of that, he removed him as the Chief of Army Staff, and put Gen. Chris Ali, who was pro-Abiola. These are the things that would tell you that he would have restored Abiola’s mandate.

But it seemed he was carried away by the proposal for him to transform to a civilian president
Well, I don’t think so. Another thing happened. When Abacha became Head of State, Rev. Chris Okotie, in a bid to solve the problem and get Abiola installed as president, wrote a proposal to Abacha, suggesting an arrangement that was common in South America, in which Abiola would be the president, then Abacha would be like a prime minister. He wrote that proposal and came to my house to discuss it with me. We agreed to travel together to Abuja; that I will go and see Abiola and he will go and see Abacha. When Abacha read the proposal, he told some people to come and pick me up from where Abiola was at that time to Aso Rock. When I got there he said, ‘Doctor I have seen the proposal from your friend.’ I didn’t know Chris (Okotie) had been there, so I said ‘My friend?’ He said ‘Yes, the reverend gentleman you came in with from Lagos.’ He just said to me, ‘Look I didn’t contest to be president or prime minister or anything like that; I don’t want all those things.’ He said the proposal was good but he was reluctant. He was not ready for it, he said, ‘How can I just make myself prime minister, it will complicate things more.’ He said his role should be to settle matters amicably.

Is it true that some Yoruba leaders betrayed Abiola?
They did so initially because they believed that Abiola would not get acceptance from the Awolowo camp. Abiola was NPN before, he then changed camp to UPN. Abiola belonged to the NPN, he gave more money to the NPN and donated a little to UPN. People advised Awolowo to return the money to Abiola querying why he gave some much to NPN. However, some Awoists thought it was wrong to have returned that money. Because we all knew how UPN was getting money then, it was from states controlled by them. It is the same thing that Action Congress of Nigeria is doing. They learnt it from the Awolowo group. I was not only Abiola’s doctor; I was his friend, confidant and in-law. When the election was near, we told Abiola to go and see Mama Awolowo and also Arthur Nzeribe, because was one politician in Igboland that had won his constituency repeatedly. He visited Nzeribe first, and Nzeribe was very happy and pledged to work very hard for him. When he landed in Lagos, we drove straight to Mama, and we arrived there just before dinner. He prostrated and said he would not get up until Mama said she forgiven him from the bottom of her heart. Mama forgave him. If you remember, Abiola won Ogun State 97 per cent. Nobody has ever done that, not even Awolowo. He confounded those Yoruba Obas. Those people went to Babangida, who likes to divide and rule, to put obstacles in Abiola’s way. When I was arguing with one of those people, he said Babangida told him how much the Federal Government owed Abiola, and said what else did Abiola want?

How did the Federal Government owe Abiola?
It’s simple. Abiola was the one who paid for the kit, clothing, food of the Nigerian soldiers sent to Liberia. Babangida was telling him, buy this, buy that for us, we will pay you back. Babangida was trying to make Abiola so weak that when the election came he would have no money left. But Abiola was doing it for a friend because he knew Babangida would claim glory for a successful outing in Liberia.
Abdulsalami Abubakar went to Abiola’s house and promised them that he would ensure that the Federal Government paid what it owed Abiola. Go and find out if he or successive administrations fulfilled that promise till today. Abacha, of all people, paid part of the debt, before Abiola declared himself President. Some of those people that betrayed Abiola are still alive. Let me just tell that Oba of Lagos, who has since died; Oba of Ijebu Ode, who is still alive; Alake of Abeokuta, who has since died; Oba of Benin, who is still there; and Soun of Ogbomoso, were pro-Abiola. Most of the other people were against him. They took sides with Babangida because they wanted contracts.

Abiola’s Betrayers Still In Govt – NADECO

National Democratic Coalition on Tuesday said those who connived with the military to annul June 12, 1993, presidential election reportedly won by business mogul, Chief MKO Abiola, were still in government. Chairman, NADECO, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retd.), stated this during the 19th anniversary of June 11, 1994 Epetedo Declaration by Abiola. Kanu, in a speech entitled '19 Years After the Epetedo Declaration: Where is the Sovereign Power of the People?', said, "Many who connived with the clique in those debasing and disenfranchising years are in power today, even masquerading as champions of democracy. "Such people include those who chaired Abiola's winning party, the Social Democratic Party, now today sitting atop party's board of trustees. "Some reign at the pinnacle of the legislative arm of government in Abuja. There are numerous others in the arms of government and even among the progressives, who ought really to search their conscience, if the survival, well-being and progress of Nigeria is truly in their agenda." He restated the call for a Sovereign National Conference, saying the conference remained the panacea for the country's socio-economic and political development. He said the 1999 Constitution was imposed on Nigerians in utter negation of their sovereignty. Another NADECO leader, Chief Ayo Opadokun, urged pro-democracy groups to do more to liberate the country. He said, "We need to do more than we are doing. We need to get ourselves organised in our streets, wards and various levels and constitutionally engage those in power that have turned us into servitude. "This is a country that exports what it does not have and imports what it has. Nigeria has oil, yet the leaders are importing oil for domestic use. Statistics available to me is that over 18 million graduates in Nigeria are jobless. This should not be if those in government could block wastage and eradicate corruption." A lawyer, Fred Agbeyegbe, spoke on the need and modalities for an SNC, saying the conference was the business of Nigerians. Also, Governor Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State described the proscribed poll as a watershed in the annals of the country. He said the supreme price paid by Abiola, could not be forgotten. In a related development, the Osun State government has declared Wednesday (today) a public holiday in commemoration of the anniversary. A statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Chief Sunday Akere, on Tuesday, said symposia, rallies and a documentary on the life of Abiola would mark the event. Meanwhile, Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has said May 29, which the Federal Government branded Democracy Day, lacks the credibility of the June 12 presidential election, won by Abiola. Soyinka stated this in a statement on the 20th anniversary of the June 12 election on Tuesday. He said, "We need to remind ourselves what June 12, 1993 represents. It is neither mere date, nor sentiment. It is simply - Human Spirit. What a futile undertaking it is then, when some individuals attempt to deny or crush it. Yet it was the power of this very spirit that brought such out of relegation or obscurity, even from the jaws of death, and bestowed upon them relevance and prominence. "What June 12 possesses is exactly what May 29, or any other day, lacks. The former was a spirit of unified purpose, the latter simply an egotistical appropriation of the gift of the former. June 12 embodies unity of purpose, equity and justice, the manifestation of the sovereign will of a people. It remains forever a watershed of Nigerian history, no matter what the future holds. "I urge you to try a simple experiment: narrate the story of May 29 to a child and watch his or her reaction. On that day - that child would concede - an individual was installed as a compromise president following a compromise election. So, what is new?" Soyinka added, "Now move on to unfold the tapestry of June 12. Run your finger along its traceries of citizen resolve, upheavals, of individual and group heroisms, of sacrifices and martyrdoms, the timeless narrative of human resilience. Watch the difference in that child's responses. Yet, even the beneficiaries of that day persist in their futile effort to kill the date and supplant it with another. Why should we be surprised? It is that unprincipled game of substitution that they have carried even to subsequent elections, substituting names of the rightful winners of elections with others who were never even in contention. "It is this same mental compulsion that moves them to attempt to rob even a calendar date of its significance, its history, its potential for character formation and sense of national formation - and transformation."

Arsenal could lose out to Juventus for Gonzalo Higuain and Stevan Jovetic

ARSENE WENGER appears likely to miss out on his two top transfer targets at Arsenal this summer despite having a £70 million budget to spend.

Arsenal-could-miss-out-on-both-targets-Gonzalo-Higuain-right-and-Stevan-Jovetic-left-this-summer Arsenal could miss out on both targets Gonzalo Higuain (right) and Stevan Jovetic (left) this summer
Last week Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis promised that the club would spend heavily this summer, having arrived at a place where they can dip into their own self-produced funds.

And at the very top of Wenger's transfer shortlist are forwards Higuain and Jovetic, from Real Madrid and Fiorentina respectively.

However, while the Gunners may potentially have the resources to sign the players, they look set to miss out on the pair with Juventus in pole position for both.

The Serie A club held talks with Real Madrid at the weekend over a move for Higuain, who is valued at around £21m by the Spanish club.

Real Madrid striker Higuain wants to leave the club despite their delay tactics
I'm young and ambitious and it is normal to feel the need to test myself elsewhere. I do not think there's anything wrong with desire
Steven Jovetic
Juventus remain the frontrunners to secure Higuain despite director general Beppe Marotta saying: "Real Madrid have told us that Higuain is not for sale and that no decision will be taken before the new coach arrives."

Real are likely to allow Higuain to leave this summer and may be playing hardball in the hope to drive up the Argentine striker's price, or invite further interest from Arsenal.

But the 25-year-old made it clear he felt his future lies away from the Bernabeu at the end of the season, when he was quoted as saying: "I am leaving Real," said Higuain. "I have been here for seven years and I have taken my time to make this decision - it isn't a heat of the moment thing."

Meanwhile, Jovetic also appears close to joining Juventus after he admitted he wants to leave Fiorentina to play for their Turin-based rivals.

READ BETWEEN THE LINES

Muslims believe in what was revealed to thier Blessed Prophet Muhammed(SAW) and what was revealed before him to other prophets of Allah. they therefore haved a comprehensive knowlegde .

You can never be a truly knowledgeable Muslim if you do not believe in the Other Prophets of Allah.
Islam thus encourages a Muslim to be an all rounder as it were.

To learn what the message of the other Prophets Is. He will discover that all the prophets taught ONENESS of Allah. He will then be able to confront anybody that holds a contrary view or challenges Him, from a position of knowledge.

If you do not know the rteal teachings of Prophet Isa (ASW), for example , If a Christian friend tells you he said he is Gos, you might believe your friend. But, if you read prophet Isa teachings, you would have discovered that nowhere in his teachings did he ever say This.

If you do not know the real story of Prophet Sulayman(ASW), you will only believe that he was known majorly for being a romantic womanizer, whom kept a harem full of woman. the real reason for this would have being lost- that he was granted immense power, wealth and knowledge by Allah and he loved Allah so much that all he desired to do was raise as many children as Jihadists for Allah's cause.

Endeavor to know the deeper meanings of things.
things are never as they seem to appear. only people with deeper knowledge read between the lines.

Man City become highest paid sports team on the planet...

Manchester City have become the best paid sports team in the world after leapfrogging Barcelona and Real Madrid for this year's top spot.
Since billionaire Sheikh Mansour’s takeover in 2008, City have become a global force on and off the football pitch, with the average wage of a first-team player rising to a whopping £5.2million a year.
City's sky-high earners such as Yaya Toure, Sergio Aguero and Carlos Tevez are part of the highest paid sports team in the world, with an average weekly wage for a member of the first-team squad reaching a staggering £100,764, more than £7,000 higher than second-placed baseball side LA Dodgers' average.

In a survey conducted by Sportingintelligence’s Global Sports Salaries Survey (GSSS) for 2013, compiled in association with ESPN The Magazine , two other Premier League clubs feature in the top 12 alongside City.
City’s bitter Manchester rivals United were placed in 12th on the list with a £3.9m average annual pay per year (£75,423 per week) and Chelsea dropped from fourth in last year's survey to eighth, with an average annual pay of £4.1m (£78,053 per week).
La Liga giants Real Madrid (3) and Barcelona (4) follow one another on the list, both with an average annual pay of around £4.7m (£90,500 per week).
Barca and Real occupied numbers one and two in last year's survey, but their fall is in part put down to the waning strength of the euro.
