Man Executed For R*Pe And Murder Of 10-Year-Old Girl

A convicted child molester condemned for the 1990 r*pe and murder of a 10-year-old girl has been executed at the Florida State Prison. Florida Gov. Rick Scott’s office said 56-year-old inmate Elmer Carroll was pronounced dead at 6:12 p.m. Wednesday at the prison in Starke. Carroll had been convicted of first-degree murder and s*xual battery in the r*pe and strangling death of Christine McGowan. The girl lived with her family next door to a halfway house for homeless men where Carroll was staying in Apopka. During Carroll’s two decades on death row, his lawyers argued he was too mentally ill to stand trial or be subjected to the death penalty. The U.S. Supreme Court denied that petition. Carroll previously had been imprisoned twice for indecent assault on a child.

Man Kills Wife Over Missing N500 In Lagos

Tragedy struck at Oronna Street in Abule-Egba area of Lagos, On Monday. 27th of May 2013 a 60-year-old man  allegedly killed his wife over his missing N500, and locked himself up with the corpse. Reports said that  fight broke out after the man identified as Gbadebo Elegbede, accused his 17-year-old son  of stealing his N500  about 7am. His wife, Maria, was said to have defended his son, an action that reportedly led to a verbal confrontation with her husband which degenerated into a scuffle.   In the process, Gbadebo was said to have hit his wife with a hard object on the face, causing her to slump.   His son, Johnson, was said to have attempted to lift his mother from the floor only to discover  that she was motionless and bleeding from the mouth and nose.   Johnson reportedly ran out to alert neighbours to come to his mother’s help, but they met the door of the apartment locked from inside, with Gbadebo threatening to kill anyone who attempted to force the door open.   Eye witnesses said some of the deceased’s relatives who rushed to the scene were also prevented from seeing Maria’s corpse as the door was still locked.   Policemen at nearby divisions who were contacted  said they had not been informed about the incident yesterday evening.   An eye witness said , “ this is not the fight time he is doing this. The first time they lost their daughter, he locked her up in the room preventing everyone, including his wife from coming inside.   Till date no one can  tell what he did with her corpse. . As you can see, everyone is afraid of him in this area”, the eye witness who simply gave her name as Nwankego said.   As at 4pm, it was gathered that  Gbadamosi was still inside the room with Maria’s corpse

Anti-Islam Protests Grow In London

About a thousand far-right protesters shouting "Muslim killers, off our streets" marched through central London on Monday against a backdrop of swelling anti-Muslim feeling following the killing of a British soldier last week.  Lee Rigby, a 25-year-old soldier, was hacked to death in broad daylight in a south London street by two men who said they killed him in the name of Islam. The attack has shocked Britain and stirred an anti-Muslim backlash, including attacks on mosques.  In a tense but largely peaceful demonstration, supporters of the far-right English Defence League (EDL) rallied in London outside Prime Minister David Cameron's residence waving placards and shouting anti-Islamic obscenities.  "Islamic extremism is probably the number one threat to Britain," said one protester, Ben Gates. Other demonstrators chanted "Muslim bombers off our streets".  Another protester, Samuel Hames, said, of Rigby: "He survived his tour of foreign lands and comes home to his family and what happened to him is disgusting." Nearly 2,000 people marched at a similar demonstration in the northern city of Newcastle on Saturday. Two men were arrested overnight for throwing firebombs at an Islamic cultural center in Grimsby, in the northeast of England. Similar attacks were recorded last week. As anti-racist groups warned there could be more reprisals, Cameron came under intense pressure on Monday for going on holiday, with pictures of him relaxing in Ibiza prompting newspapers to question his leadership at a time of unease. "Is Ibiza chillaxed (relaxed) enough for you, Prime Minister?" asked the right-wing Daily Mail newspaper. Faith Matters, a charity working to defuse religious tensions, said it had registered a spike in reports of Islamophobic attacks in calls to its hotline, describing incidents as "very focused, very aggressive attacks". Two war memorials in London were vandalized with red graffiti overnight, including the word 'Islam' spray-painted onto one monument. Suspects Michael Adebolajo, 28, and Michael Adebowale, 22, allegedly ran over Rigby with a car near his army barracks and butchered him with knives. Police shot the two, and they remain under armed guard in separate London hospitals. In a dramatic video clip shot by an onlooker and shown on British television, one of the two men, his hands bloodied, says he killed the soldier in retaliation for the deaths of Muslims killed by British troops in faraway lands. Police have arrested 10 people in connection with the murder. Three people have been released on bail. The attack prompted an emotional outpouring of sympathy in Britain, with well-wishers laying hundreds of flowers in the street where Rigby was killed. But some were openly angry.  "We've had enough of our soldiers being abused... We'd had enough of the plots and the violence," EDL wrote on its website. In an attempt to counter the right-wing rally, anti-fascist group Unite Against Racism held its own demonstration nearby but was heavily outnumbered by EDL protesters.  A handful of far-right demonstrators threw bottles and coins at the anti-fascist rally. Police vans and officers blocked the two groups from approaching each other.  "They are a minority and a very scary growing minority," an anti-EDL protester who gave her name as Clara said. "I feel ashamed to be a Londoner today. This is disgusting."     Source:Reuters

I ‘ve Done Well, Says President Ebele Goodluck Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan, yesterday, gave a robust defence of his administration’s performance at mid-term and dismissed public and media assessment of his ministers, saying the criticisms were mostly bereft of objectivity.

jonathan22The presentation was graced by former Nigerian leaders, including former President Shehu Shagari, General Yakubu Gowon, Chief Ernest Shonekan, former Chief of General Staff, Gen. Oladipo Diya; one-time United States presidential candidate, Jesse Jackson among others.
President Jonathan spoke at the public presentation of the administration’s mid-term report in Abuja during which administration officials rolled out positive financial indicators which among others was that Nigeria has become the highest investment destination in the continent.
Also present at the event were the Senate President, Sen. David Mark; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha and the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar.
Jackson, speaking at the occasion, commended the president for giving a mid-term report of his performance. He said that it was indicative that the ship of the nation was sailing in the right direction.
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator Anyim Pius Anyim also commended the leadership of President Jonathan, who he said had shown impressive democratic culture through his restraint in the face of unparalleled challenges to his authority.
President Jonathan was nevertheless dismissive of media assessment of his administration. He said that as a former teacher, he was conscious of the fact that any examination should be guided by a marking scheme.
He thus challenged the media to use the 234-page report as a veritable tool for any objective assessment.
He said: “Only on Monday, I looked through a particular publication in one of our dailies, which gave an assessment of the performance of the ministers.
“The first thing I looked for that I did not see was the criteria they used to assess the performance of the ministers. As a teacher, I know that for you to mark a student, you must have a marking scheme. Because, assessment could be very subjective, and if a fellow politician is assessing another politician, you assess the person based on heartbeats.”
He said two ministries; the ministries of Trade and Investments and National Planning which performed creditably well were rated average.
“Since I came to the centre in 2007, I have worked with three ministers of National Planning and three ministers of Trade and Investments. They have never done what is being done today.
“In terms of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) attracted to this country by activities of that ministry, it has never happened. In spite of our security challenges, there is so much interest from business men wanting to come to Nigeria.
“Before now, that Ministry of Trade and Investments was a dead end, but now they are very active. Talk about Ministry of Planning, people say that until Shamsudeen came on board, we did not even know that we had a Planning Ministry.
“But these two ministries were scored average and I asked what are the criteria? That is the purpose of today, our elders, ladies and gentlemen. The idea is to formally present a document to all Nigerians about the activities of the government these past two years.
“I plead with all of us especially those who want to assess and write about it to develop criteria because without a marking scheme, you cannot mark anybody’s paper. Develop your own, compare with previous governments. Develop your marking scheme and mark us.”

RIVER STATE GOVERNOR MR. ROTIMI AMAECHI TO BE IMPEACHED

Clandestine moves to impeach Rivers State Governor, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, heightened on Wednesday as eight members of the House of Assembly were said to have shifted loyalty to the camp of the Minister of State for Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike.

rotimi-amaechiFive members of the House had, from the outset, taken a position against the governor since the beginning of the crisis which is threatening the existence of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state.
Though the names of the lawmakers were not mentioned, the number of anti-Amaechi state legislators has suddenly swollen to 13 out of 32.
But the Speaker of the House, Mr. Otelemaba Amachree, said the number of members of the House, who had been swayed against the governor, was not enough to impeach the governor.
Amachree stated that with 19 lawmakers on the side of the governor, it would be difficult to remove (Amaechi).
He said, “We are aware that between five and eight lawmakers have compromised and are making moves to impeach the governor. But they don’t have enough number to impeach the state governor.
“They have to impeach the Speaker first before thinking of removing the governor because he (Speaker) will not betray the governor. Mr. Speaker is never a traitor and he (Amachree) has not seen any reason why he should give up on Amaechi.
“Apart from that, the lawmakers that have compromised would have to tell the world the governor’s offence, because as far as we are concerned, Governor Amaechi has not committed any impeachable offence.”
The Speaker challenged the compromised lawmakers to come out in the open and explain to Rivers people why they had decided to betray the governor.
It was, however, learnt that the eight lawmakers, who were swayed to Wike’s camp during a meeting held outside the state, decided to hide their intention in order not to jeopardise the plan to unseat the governor.
Amaechi had, during an interaction with some youths in the state, declared that he was not afraid of being impeached, saying he had done his best for the development of the state.
He urged the people to use their voter cards to remove “irresponsible governments” from public office in 2015.
It will be recalled that the House of Assembly had adjourned sine die (indefinitely) after suspending the Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area, Mr. Timothy Nsirim, even as a caretaker committee was sworn in to oversee the affairs of the council.
The development had deepened the political crisis in the state, with security operatives from the state Police Command sealing off the council secretariat about a month ago.

Manchester United and Manchester City are competing to bring Cesc Fabregas back to the Barclays Premier League next season.

New United manager David Moyes is considering a bid for the £25million-rated midfielder after being made aware of Barcelona’s willingness to sell the former Arsenal skipper.
But in an intriguing sub-plot, City have been notified of the Spain midfielder’s availability, and are also interested.

Arsenal have first option, as part of the deal that took Fabregas to the Nou Camp, but Moyes is a long-time admirer of the 26-year-old and even made efforts to take him to Everton on loan during Fabregas’ early days at Arsenal.

He may have better luck at the second attempt after identifying central midfield as United’s relative weakness and weighing up possible moves for Fabregas, his Barcelona team-mate Thiago Alcantara and PSV Eindhoven skipper Kevin Strootman.
Holland midfielder Strootman, 23, is a tall, commanding figure who can operate in a holding role or as a deep-lying playmaker.
He has been under review at Old Trafford for months.
Outgoing Malaga manager Manuel Pellegrini is poised to take over at City in the coming weeks and the Chilean is keen on bringing emerging La Liga talent Isco with him to England.

But Pellegrini must fight off interest from Real Madrid for both Isco, 21, and Navas, 27, to bolster his attacking options.

After a newborn baby was flushed down a toilet the tragedy of China's children were explored

IT has taken little more than a generation for China to become the world’s economic powerhouse. It is taking rather longer to change Chinese society, however. This has been illustrated in horrifying fashion by the astonishing story of the two-day-old “sewer baby” who was rescued from a toilet waste pipe in Jinhua City in Zhejiang province, eastern China.

Newborn-baby-rescued-after-being-flushed-down-toilet-in-Pujiang-Zhejiang-Province-ChinaNewborn baby rescued after being flushed down toilet in Pujiang, Zhejiang Province, China
At first it was thought the child had been flushed down the lavatory because it was unwanted. Though such heartlessness provoked widespread anger, fingers also pointed at China’s infamous one-child policy as the real culprit. The baby’s parents had gone “over quota” – ie, this was not their first – and could not afford the fine demanded by such a transgression. They had no option but to try to get rid of it. That at least was the initial assumption.
Since those early shocking reports a different picture has emerged. The alarm had first been raised by a resident in a block of flats who had heard cries coming from a waste pipe on the fourth floor. The alarm-raiser remained on the scene for the entire two hours of the rescue operation, watching nervously as firemen sawed away the section of pipe in which the baby was trapped then going on to Pujiang County People’s Hospital where doctors and firemen took the pipe apart with pliers and saws to free the infant, who signalled his liberation with a loud wail. She remains in the hospital, watching over the child in incubator 59 (hence his naming as Baby 59) with a fractured skull and bruises.
For it turns out that this concerned resident was none other than the baby’s mother, a fact which came to light when police confronted her with bloody tissues found in her room. The 22-year-old, who works in a restaurant and is single, claims she became pregnant after a one-night stand. With no support from the baby’s father and unable to pay for an abortion she hid her pregnancy from her parents by wearing loose clothes. When she began having pains she went to the shared bathroom and the baby slipped out unexpectedly. As Chinese lavatories are of the squatting variety with no U-bend the baby slid straight down the waste pipe and became trapped out of reach.
A very different version of events, to be sure, from the original “abandoned baby flushed down the toilet” scenario – but nonetheless one which highlights the disastrous effect of communist China’s determination to control every aspect of the lives of its citizens.
It is a common misconception that Chairman Mao imposed the one child per couple rule. In fact Mao encouraged large families to boost the workforce and bring about his nation’s economic miracle. It was his successor Deng Xiaoping who brought in the edict in 1979, three years after Mao’s death. Thirty years after the People’s Republic was founded in 1949 the population had nearly doubled to close to a billion but economic growth had not. The country could not provide for itself.
Mao’s successor imposed a new “family planning policy”: one child per couple. It applied most rigidly to those living in cities, rural couples were allowed to have a second baby if their first was a girl. Additional ones were allowed if the parents were both only children or if the first pregnancy had produced twins. Before getting pregnant at all a couple had to seek permission from the Communist Party.
THE policy is often brutally enforced. Fines for “illegal” births are as much as three times the annual salary of the offender and there have been numerous accounts of officials rounding up thousands of women and subjecting them to late abortions or forced sterilisations. Abortions are performed even in the last days of pregnancy by injecting the expectant mother directly into the abdomen to induce labour. Giving birth is as much a matter of meeting targets as the grain or rice harvests. Unfortunately all this has straddled a period in which tradition has collided with advances in science. Chinese society favours sons over daughters because only male children can carry out the ancient practice of ancestor worship.
Ultrasound scans enable parents to know the sex of their unborn child. It also allows them to ensure that their one shot at pregnancy results in a baby of the right gender. If not destroyed with selective abortion, girl babies are often unregistered and Chinese orphanages are full of females who are not orphans at all.
China, CHILDREN, BABY, flushed, rescue, motherhood, family planning policy, One-Child Policy, single mothers, strict population lawsOne male child per married couple is generally the rule, so sons are prized and adored
If not destroyed with selective abortion, girl babies are often unregistered and Chinese orphanages are full of females who are not orphans at all
OVERALL the result of this “family planning” has been a gross distortion of nature whose full impact has yet to be felt. The normal gender balance would be 103 males to 100 females. In China it is 118 males to 100 females. Schools have become almost all-male institutions, often with only a handful of girl pupils.
It is predicted that by 2020 there will be 30 million more men than women in the country, leading to untold potential social instability. In traditional communities, where marrying and fathering children is regarded as a social duty, bride kidnapping is already common.
Worse, China’s family planning policy has not even worked that well. The government officially claims that it has prevented 400 million births but at least two independent studies say the true figure is 100 million, which would have been achieved naturally anyway as prosperity increased. The price for a failed attempt at social engineering has been high.
As for the mother of the sewer baby, her problems are by no means over. Her infant is not only illegitimate he is illegal. He will be unable to get a resident’s permit which means he cannot attend a state school or receive healthcare - all because his mother could not apply to the Communist Party for permission to have the baby because she could not produce a marriage certificate.
More immediately she may still face charges of attempted murder if the authorities do not believe her explanation of how her baby ended up trapped in a waste pipe. There are, after all, some glaring holes in her story. The baby was in the pipe for two days before the alarm was raised. He was only 5lb - a small weight which might indicate that he was premature. Or had the mother induced an early birth once she could no longer conceal her pregnancy?
All these are questions to be answered in due course. In the meantime sympathetic Chinese people will doubtless urge plucky little Baby 59 on to a full recovery and reflect on the tragedies that arise when a dictatorial government decrees that the personal is political.
