No Compensation For Boko Haram Victims —Presidential Committee

Chairman, Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution
on Security Challenges in the North, Tanimu Turaki, on Sunday ruled
out any form of compensation for victims of the Boko Haram insurgency
in some parts of the North.
Addressing Muslim leaders, who gathered at the National Conference on
the Role of Muslim Scholars, organised by the Jama'atul Nasril Islam
in Kaduna, Turaki, however, said those to be compensated were security
operatives, who lost their lives during the incidents.

Turaki said, "Government cannot pay compensation but it will support
victims. It will compensate military personnel that were affected by
this insurgency.

"Government will not have the capacity to give compensation because of
the number of victims involved in the insurgency incidents".

Turaki, who led other members of the committee to the conference, also
asked Muslim leaders, among them the Sultan of Sokoto and President
General of the JNI, Alhaji Sa'ad Abubakar lll, to appeal to the group
(Boko Haram) to embrace dialogue, adding that Islam, as a religion,
encourages dialogue.

He said, "How do you compensate somebody who has lost family members?
How much will you compensate him with when he is battling with the
psychological effect of the incidents?"

The presidential committee chairman, who claimed that his team was at
the meeting to impress it upon the leadership of the JNI to talk to
the sect on the need for dialogue, said since the sect believed in
Islam, its members should also imbibe the tenets of the religion.

He said even in countries like Afghanistan, Syria and in Nigeria
during the civil war, dialogue was used as the last resort to resolve
the problems.

Turaki insisted that there was no crisis or difference that could not
be settled through dialogue.

He said, "So, we beg for prayers because there is no evil that prayer
cannot solve.

"No matter the ideology of Boko Haram, it is twisted towards Islam. It
is very unfortunate. We therefore want this conference to examine the
immediate and remote causes of the growing insurgency in the region."

"So far, we have had robust discussions with Muslim leaders,
government officials, traditional rulers and clerics.

"We pray this conference will call on them to come out and embrace
dialogue. If you are using the name of the Prophet, then there is room
for dialogue. It is respectful to come and dialogue; we are all ready
for dialogue."

He added, "Even wars in other countries of the world, and coming back
home, the Biafra/Nigeria civil war, provided an opportunity for
dialogue because it is not war that bring peace, but dialogue. So, let
them give peace a chance, and let them embrace dialogue."

Fuel Scarcity Looms As NUPENG Begins Warning Strike On Monday

Nigeria’s petroleum and gas workers have issued a notice of a three-day warning strike starting Monday, over longstanding labour dispute, raising the spectre of nationwide fuel crisis as workers have been ordered to stop products at the depots. The Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, said it will end the warning strike on Wednesday after when it will embark on an “indefinite” industrial action of its demands are not met. This is contained in a statement signed by NUPENG’s General-Secretary, Isaac Aberare, on Sunday in Lagos. The statement said that the workers were going on strike over alleged unfair labour practices by some major oil companies in the country. “The strike is also to protest the refusal of NARTO to implement the signed collective bargaining agreement with the petroleum tanker drivers. “We are also unhappy over the bad state of roads across the nation, ” the statement said. The statement said that all efforts by the Federal Ministry of Labour to intervene in the issue three weeks ago had failed. It said that the oil multinationals had failed to implement the agreement reached for a truce brokered by the Minister of Labour, Emeka Wogu. The statement alleged that the union’s call for a stakeholders meeting in the oil and gas sector to address the situation had also been ignored. It directed all members of NUPENG at the various depots to stop loading petroleum products for the next three days. “Members in all the branches in the country must also follow suit,’’ the statement said. It said that if after the three-day strike, nothing was done to address the situation, NUPENG would be forced to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike. (NAN)

Sexual Healing: Pastor Arrested For Sleeping With Young Girls During Prayer Sessions

Pastor of World International Ministries of Sumter, South Carolina, Larry DuRant, has been charged with sexually abusing three young girls during private prayer sessions. DuRant allegedly told the young girls that performing sexual acts with him would protect and heal them from having lesbian relationships, contracting sexual related diseases and from getting pregnant.Police started investigating DuRant, 58, in May, after one of the alleged victims told her parents about the private prayer or “healing” sessions. DuRant was arrested Friday and has now been charged with two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct with a minor between the ages of 11 and 14 and four counts of third-degree criminal sexual conduct. One of the alleged victims was only 11 years old. The victim said that DuRant had told her to keep quiet about their “private prayer session” and that she should not report it to anyone and “go against God’s will.” Police believe that there may be other victims who have just not come forward yet and are asking for any information as to other alleged abuses.Deputy Chief Alvin Holston said that because the alleged abuse had been going on for more than two years, and given the methods that DuRant allegedly used, they believe there may be other victims out there.Holston went on to say “It appeared that he may have had a routine on gaining the trust and the private company of some of the juveniles.” DuRant had been offering private prayer sessions at his home as well as two World International Ministry centers since 2011, according to court documents. DuRant’s wife, Melody also works at the church ministry. According to reports, DuRant has also been charged with forgery after he allegedly forged the name of one of his victim’s grandmothers on a Quit Claim Deed and filed it with the Sumter County Register of Deeds. Arsenal have formally sent in a £20million bid for Manchester United striker, Wayne Rooney. 3 Corps Members Get Kidnapped In Rivers State

Culled from PMNews

Three Nigerian corps members serving at Government Comprehensive
Secondary School in the oil producing state of Rivers were kidnapped
early yesterday morning through Ogolokom Water Front in Abua.

The kidnapped corps members are Ugochi Martins, Lajoke Richard and
Esther Nwanchukwu.

Abua is one of the four local councils that make up the Orashi region
of the state. Chairmen of the councils that also include Ahoada East,
Ahoada West, and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni,ONELGA, early this week complained
to Governor Chibuike Amaechi about the increased rate of kidnappings
in the area.

Confirming the kidnap, the Rivers State Police Command Public Relations
Officer,Angela Agabe,DSP, said the command has closed down three
lodges being used by corps members in Abua/odual Local Govt area
following the kidnap.

The police image maker also said other corps members have been
relocated to Ominama corpers lodge at Abua central for safety.

DSP Angela Agabe further said security operatives have been drafted to
the area and intensive search is on to rescue the innocent kidnapped
NYSC members.

The Corps Members lodge closed down is located at Ogolokom, Otapha
and Egbelom communities.

kidnapping of female Corps members who are also sexually molested
while in captivity.

Waiting To Get Pregnant? Try IVF

Read a 53-year old woman's story below.

It was boundless joy at St Ives Hospital Lagos when a 53-year-old
woman was recently delivered of two bouncing baby boys. The woman was
conceived through Invitro Fertilisation (IVF), having waited for over
20 years in humiliation and agony...

IVF is a process by which an egg is fertilised by sperm outside the
body. The process involves monitoring a woman's ovulatory process,
removing ovum or ova (egg or eggs) from the woman's ovaries and
letting sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium in a laboratory.

The fertilised egg (zygote) is then transferred to the patient's
uterus (womb) after three to five days of being in the incubator, with
the intention of establishing a successful pregnancy.

In a chat with Vanguard in Lagos, the elated woman, who pleaded
anonymity, probably for cultural reasons, described it as "20 years of
tensed waiting for her marriage to produce fruits."

The jubilant nursing mother and her husband said they were not after
publicity but decided to speak to the press in order to encourage
couples who are presently facing similar challenges in their marriage
not to give up, adding that it is never too late for anyone.

She admitted that she has almost given up when it was obvious that
menopause had set in but continued to exercise her religious faith,
until according to her, God directed her to St Ives Centre, even when
she was not having the required money to carry out the IVF circle.

" If one is in a marriage for two – three years, and has no child to
show for it, as an African, there will be pressure, so mine was not
exceptional. Though my people respected my person, there were
pressures both from within and outside. But l held on to God because
I'm a strong Christian and l know He never fails. I serve a living God
who is faithful despite our unfaithfulness.

"I heard about St Ives just by chance. That was in September last
year. Coincidentally, l did my Masters programme at Obafemi Awolowo
University (OAU), very close to the hospital, and l never knew this
place existed. It was divine and all things work together for those
that love God.

"My advice to every woman wanting fruit of the womb is that they
should hold on to God and l pray for them that their joy should come
into manifestation soon. There is nothing impossible for God, it could
be difficult with man but certainly not with God. If He can do mine at
53, it shows no case is concluded.

"For me, l see it as a reward for my past shame. God has given me
double glory, my two boys. It is more than a miracle. And for the
management of St Ives, l keep praying for them because they are not
after one's money, if they were, l couldn't have registered.

"People used to call me Big Mummy, but God has given me a new and
better name, 'mummy twins'. l am now a fulfilled woman," she narrated.

Her husband, who claimed to be four months older than his wife, said
he knew his wife at age 12 when they were in secondary school but time
and space set them apart for separate marriages where the man was
fortunate to have children unlike the woman.

Fate however reunited them to become a happy family today having known
each other for over 40 years.

He said the joy that the twins brought to the family had overridden
their past apprehension; trauma and agony all through the years of his
wife's infertility, adding that she might have wept secretly on
countless occasions.

"Today, all we are saying is thank you God. My wife had fasted and
prayed and l believed that is why you see her looking like under
sixteen now. I must confess that everybody is happy," he said.

Reacting on the feat, Chief Medical Director of St Ives Hospital,
Babatunde Okewale said the hospital's Fertility Unit adopts a
success-oriented approach towards infertility, focusing on solution
for infertile couples at an affordable cost rather than doing endless
investigation and tests.

The cost of IVF in most Nigerian hospitals, he said, was relatively
between N650,000 and 1 million per circle and that was largely
dependent on an individual patient. He noted that it was never a cheap
process globally as it costs about 10, 000 dollars and above 5, 000
pounds in the United States of America and United Kingdom
respectively.

Okewale pointed out that there were other procedures in medicine that
were more expensive than IVF, giving kidney transplant and hip
replacement that cost over N1 million as examples. He maintained that
the procedure was affordable by most Nigerians.

He revealed that through IVF, about 550 babies have been delivered at
his hospital which was established five years ago. He said St Ives
does a half price promo once a year, in collaboration with some
Non-Governmental Organisations.

Okewale further stated that the hospital is highly specialised in
treating repeated IVF failure, provides treatment for men diagnosed
with sperm problems and in elderly patients with a success of about 30
percent, including the conception and delivery by a 57-year-old woman.

As infertility continues on the rise worldwide, he enumerated some of
the causes as urbanization, pollution, stress, chemical exposure,
career orientation, late settlement in life, non-properly treated
infections, obesity and abuse of antibiotics.

Urging Nigerian women to start bearing children earlier, he also said
that the success of IVF was determined by age and the earlier the
better.

27million Lines At Risk As NCC Disconnects Unregistered SIMs Today

If you are reading this and you have not registered your phone line(s), it may just be almost late. In fact, you need not wonder why you may neither receive nor complete any calls from today. This is because the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, says the collation, harmonisation and authentication of the subscriber’s identification modules, SIMs card registration it embarked upon in conjunction with all the telecom operators in Nigeria, since 2011, ends today, and those whose numbers were not captured will be disconnected. For the past two years, the industry regulator (NCC) has embarked on a massive campaign, sensitizing telephone subscribers on the need to register their phones to enable a proper record of subscribers in the country, effective monitoring of telecommunications activities and cut down on phone-related crimes. The regulator also made it clear that after a six-month period which expires on September 2011, those who did not register their lines stood the risk of losing them by deactivation. However, following the panic, tension and anxiety as the exercise came to an end, the Commission allowed a grace period by asking people who had not registered to go to their operators to do so while it was collating, harmonising and authenticating the data already gathered. The harmonisation and authentication exercise have taken over one year and the NCC, a few months back, declared that on June 30, 2013, all unregistered lines would be deactivated. Tension in the industry is at its height. This also reflects the growing nature of Nigerian telecom industry and the intrigues which heralded the exercise, March 2011 when it was flagged off. As at Thursday, about 27 million SIMs out of the 164 million connected lines and 119 million active were said to be still unregistered. MTN Nigeria, according to figures from the NCC has 52 million subscribers; Globacom, 24.3 million; Airtel, 24.1 million; and Etisalat, 15.1 million. How it all beganIn the wake of unending security challenges facing the country, it became expedient that measures needed to be taken. In 2009, the then Executive Vice Chairman of NCC, Engr Ernest Ndukwe, opted for SIM registration as one of the measures. SIM registration is a standard practice in almost all economies of the world for its ability to check phone crimes and, in Nigeria, such crimes, including death threats via text messages and kidnappings, were becoming common. A meeting between the regulator, operators and other stakeholders were held where government mandated the operators to start registering subscribers. However, it was learnt that the operators expressed inability to do a good job in less than three years, prompting the agreement that they should register new entrants while the regulator finds way of registering existing subscribers. The operators later went on registration of both the new and old subscribers. The action infuriated the regulator. Then the regulator under the current EVC, Dr Eugene Juwah, presented a budget of N6.1 billion for the exercise. The budget caused some stir at the National Assembly and the telecom sector and created different camps that engaged in claims of whether the bill was justified or not. Eventually, on February 14, 2011, the exercise began. Campaign Subscribers initially were reluctant to adapt to the new directive and it became clear that something needed to lure them into the exercise. The operators introduced different packages. Globacom for instance offered reward packages including a guaranteed 30 minutes free airtime (10) minutes per month for 3 months, all expense-paid trip to Manchester or Dubai to 60 registered customers (20 per month for 3 months) and N20,000 airtime to 300 lucky winners(100 per month for 3 months). Meanwhile the company has made over 17 millionaires in the N1m category of the promo. Etisalat Nigeria introduced 9ja Free Credit Promo, designed to reward new and existing subscribers who register or have registered their SIM cards. The promo gives a 30 per cent bonus credit to call any network. With consistent text messages ardio jingles and TV commercials, Airtel lured subscribers to register their SIM cards and win a gift. Other operators like Visafone opted for the direct marketing strategy including road shows. MTN Nigeria embarked on the billionaire promo tagged the BIG Reward programme. Improved turn-out Confirming improved turnout of customers at the SIM registration centres since the launch of the Big Reward, MTN General Manager, Consumer Marketing, Kola Oyeyemi, said,. “That is the overriding objective of the BIG Reward programme; getting subscribers to register so that we can have a credible database of telephone users for our country. When we have such a database, government can better plan the economy and the people will be the better for it.” Subscribers ask for extension Meanwhile, the National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers of Nigeria (NATCOMS) has reportedly appealed to the NCC to extend the deadline by another three months to give every subscriber a fair consideration. The body said several factors have all conspired to prevent many subscribers from complying adequately to the deadline. In a letter to NCC, entitled, “Appeal to NCC for 3-Month One-Way Final Warning on SIM Registration”, NATCOMS alleged that several agents carrying out the SIM registration process employed some sharp practices that discouraged subscribers from registering. According to part of the letter,: “In the last two to three weeks, reports, issues and concerns reaching us are as follows: 1. During the SIM registration exercise, some umbrella SIM registration agents were not collecting the full details needed because of the rush by the agents to register as many subscribers so as get paid big. 2. Some umbrella SIM registration agents, during the active registration period and even now are asking subscribers to pay N100; a situation that discouraged subscribers. 3. Some umbrella SIM registration agents, even when they are agents of a particular network operator, collect other operators SIM cards for registration in order to shore up the number of SIM cards they register daily.” 4. Some umbrella SIM registration agents copy their daily registered subscribers and give to their colleagues in business as some form of ‘help’ In view of the submissions above, a lot of subscribers will be locked out due to no fault of theirs as they think they have registered their SIM cards. Against the backdrop of the above and in order to ensure that every subscriber is given fair consideration, we are appealing to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to give subscribers a 3-Month One-Way final warning extension on SIM cards registration. (i.e. subscribers to be able to receive calls). But Director, Public Affairs, NCC, Mr Tony Ojobo, at the weekend, stated that “there will be no extension after this deadline”. He added: “SIM registration has been on for two years now and, on June 30, all unregistered SIMs will be disconnected”.

Truth Of the Matter : Why Tope Alabi and Prophet Ajanaku Parted Ways

It's no longer news that the father-daughter relationship between
popular female gospel singer, Tope Alabi and her spiritual father,
Prophet Ireti Ajanaku of Christ Victory Chapel International, Ayobo,
Lagos has gone sour over irreconcilable differences.

Fresh facts have just emerged on what smeared the 13 years
relationship between the duo. A very dependable source told First
Weekly that part of the reasons for the imbroglio between the two
personalities was that Tope was playing hide and seek with the
acclaimed man of God.

Tope and her husband, Soji were reportedly going to the church
whenever they deemed fit and concentrated more on their music
engagement instead of participating in church activities as against
what they used to do in the past.

According to a close source, Tope's current posture was not what they
agreed upon before the man of God anointed her music ministry many
years back.
A reliable source said that before Tope Alabi climbed the success
ladder, she used to go to Prophet Ajanaku's church on commercial
motorcycle (okada) and used to cry profusely each time she met the man
of God as she was desperate for breakthrough, adding that she is now
biting the fingers that fed her.

The final straw that broke the camel's back, sources said, happened
during the 2012 cross over night. Sources at the programme on the
night of December 31st 2012 confirmed to First Weekly that Tope, who
used to sit in the front row among the church officials, avoided the
seats and went to sit in the midst of other worshippers as she had
started having problems with her spiritual father then.

This sudden attitude of Tope, we were told, didn't go down well with
Pastor Ajanaku. However, acting on impulse on a very swift manner in
accordance with the Biblical Prophet Samuel when he anointed David,
while King Saul was still reigning, Pastor Ajanaku reportedly
collected the micro-phone and announced a younger female gospel
artiste, Ifemide, who was attending the church for the first time.

Pastor Ajanaku reportedly told Ifemide to kneel down and told the
congregation that a new baby has just been born. Ajanaku allegedly
told Ifemide to carry on with the work of God with his full backing
and the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Pastor Ajanaku reiterated
further that the anointing has been taken from someone else and given
to the young lady.

Our sources said that Tope was really shattered by the events that
were unfolding right in her very eyes. She was said to have developed
cold feet and started shedding tears, and that the singer with a
sonorous voice immediately vacated her seat and left the church. She
reportedly complained bitterly to a close buddy that the disgrace was
too much for her to bear, and she allegedly left the church a sad
person on New Year day, when everybody was in a celebration mood.
Sources maintained that the father-daughter relationship between her
and the prophet unceremoniously came to an end that day.

Our source said that Pastor Ajanaku warned Tope Alabi on the
consequences of her actions on several occasions.

"My Brother, you can't be close to someone like Pastor Ajanaku and be
committing adultery and believe that he would not find out. Tope had
been warned to stop sleeping around," said a source.

Those who should know said that Soji is the number three man Tope
Alabi would marry. They said that the beautiful gospel act had a boy
for her first husband, who is now 23 years old and that she lost the
baby she had for her second husband to death.

"When you bite more than you could chew, you would not be able to eat
again. Tope bit more than she could chew. Go and ask her, who
prophesied to her 13 years ago that she would have babies for her
current husband and that she would be so busy making money as a gospel
artiste such that she would not even have time for any other thing,"
said a source.

Ajanaku however felt that it was high time she concentrated on her
work as a minister of God and leave the things of the world.

A source maintained that Tope Alabi has been sleeping around with
prominent men in the society and that this is unexpected of a gospel
artiste.
On the allegation that Pastor Ajanaku was making passes at Tope, the
source said that this was far from the truth because, according to
him, the anointed man of God would never toy with such a sin,
especially that she related with Tope like his daughter.

When called on the phone to react to the allegations, Tope's husband,
who always pick her calls, insisted that he and his wife had nothing
to say on the matter.
He said: "people have been writing a lot about the matter and we also
heard that Prophet Ajanaku has been saying a lot of things on the
issue, we are less concerned about that, God is on the throne. The
truth will come to the forefront, when the time comes, but for now, we
will keep our fingers crossed. I will never be forced to say anything
on this issue, God knows what transpired and He would judge, when the
time comes."

Meanwhile Ifemade, who is now the apple of the eyes of the acclaimed
prophet, is gradually becoming the toast of events organizers in
Lagos. The young gospel act performed at the recently held Global News
Awards, which held with fanfare in Ikeja, Lagos.

Mother Abandons Baby In Hospital

Health workers and patients at the Osun State General Hospital, Osogbo were left confused on Friday when a nursing mother, Mrs Grace Adipe, allegedly abandoned her three-day-old baby in the hospital. The hospital community was taken aback as the news of the abandonment spread. A woman, Adijat Bamijoko, told NAN that she was in the hospital to assist a patient when the incident occurred on Thursday, and wondered “how a nursing mother could abandon her child.“Although, I do not know the woman, but one wonders why she should abandon her baby in the hospital where Gov. Rauf Aregbesola had made medication free for all,” she said. Other people who expressed surprise over the incident, called on the hospital’s management to ensure that the fleeing mother was brought back to care for her baby.Search team , including government officials and law enforcement agents had failed in their effort to find the woman. The Osun Commissioner for Women and Children’s Affairs, Mrs Mofolake Adegboyega, said in a statement that efforts to contact the woman by the hospital authorities were yet to yield results. Adegboyega called Adipe’s relations and members of the public to be vigilant on the whereabouts of the woman. She urged members of the public to consider the innocence and future of the child and help in efforts to find the mother and her relations. The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Friday said controversial
Nigerian actress, Tonto Dikeh, risks a minimum of 15 years in jail for
encouraging the consumption of hemp.
Dikeh had on Friday posted photographs of a wrap of hemp and grains of
the weed formed into the letters, 'Happy birthday POKO.'

She also posted a photograph of herself and added the inscription, 'Mi
smoke ganja mi smoke weed while my hatez smoke ma gossip.'

Her picture is a close-up of her face that seemed to depict her in a high state.

When we the contacted NDLEA for comments, its spokesman, Mr. Mitchell
Ofoyeju, said the matter would be investigated.

He said the matter had been referred to the appropriate department of
the agency.

Ofoyeju said, "Our attention has been drawn to the post quite frankly
and I can tell you that action will be taken on it. The law is clear
and NDLEA has been very clear on the issue. No one is permitted to
sell, use, cultivate or encourage the use of Indian hemp in Nigeria.
The weed is one of the banned narcotics in the country.

"NDLEA Act Section 14 (b) states that any person who conspires with,
aids, abets, counsels, attempts to commit or is an accessory to any
act or offence referred to in this act shall be guilty of an offence
under this act and liable on conviction to be sentenced to
imprisonment for a term not less than 15 years and not exceeding 25
years.

"Investigation has not started as of now but definitely, a step has to
be taken on the matter. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse; so, it
is obvious that the actress stands the risk of 15 years jail term. The
appropriate department is meeting on the issue for necessary action."

The NDLEA spokesman, however, declined to give any hint on particular
steps the agency would take in its investigation, citing reasons
bearing on ethics.

Dikeh's post has expectedly drawn mixed reactions from readers, with
many of them voicing concern for the way she is living her
life.[Punch]

Photographer Drags TuFace, Wife To Court Over Wedding Pictures

Justice Mohammed Idris of the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has
fixed October 16, 2013 for the commencement of trial in a N120 million
copyright suit filed against popular music star, Innocent Idibia,
a.k.a. TuFace, his wife, Annie Idibia and their manager, Anthonio
Anifite over photographs allegedly taken at the recent traditional
wedding of the musician and his wife in Akwa Ibom State.

Abuja based photographer, Emmanuel Okolo, who is the plaintiff in the
suit alongside his studio, Papilonmexy filed suit against the
defendants.

He is asking for six reliefs, two of which include N100 million in
general damages and N20million in exemplary damages.
At the resumed hearing of the case yesterday, neither TuFace nor his
wife was represented in court. Anifite who is the second defendant was
however represented by his counsel, J.O Uttute.

Meanwhile, a mild drama ensued when the judge openly admonished Uttute
after the latter claimed that he had filed his defence when he had not
done so.

The judge warned him not to come to this court again if he was not
prepared for the case. "You told me that you have filed your response,
but looking through here, there is nothing to that effect. And you are
even smiling. Do you think you are here to joke? Never come to this
court again if you are not prepared. You don't even know when the case
was filed and you are not prepared for it," said the judge.

Also, the plaintiff's counsel, Habeeb Oredola expressed worry over the
defendants' inability to appear before the court or be represented by
a counsel after they were served with the writs of summon.

In the writ of summon, Okolo and his studio claimed they were
contracted by TuFace's wife through a third party, identified as Ms
Chineze Anyaene to take photo shots at the traditional wedding held in
Eket, Akwa Ibom state in March, 2013.

The plaintiff said, he was reluctant at the beginning since the offer
was coming through a third party, but later accepted after he was
convinced that the offer was actually with the blessing of the first
defendant.

Annie Idibia was said to have later contacted the photographer after
the wedding and demanded for the printing of 10 of the high resolution
pictures taken.

Mandela Family Sues Grandson Over Burial Site

As former South African President, Nelson Mandela, remained in a critical condition in hospital on Friday, a family feud over where the 94-year-old former president should be buried went to the courts. Mandela’s oldest daughter, Makaziwe, and 15 other family members have pressed a court application to get Mandela’s grandson to return the bodies of three of Mandela’s children to their original graves in the eastern rural village of Qunu, according to the South African Broadcasting Corporation. The grandson, Mandla Mandela, acknowledges having reburied the three bodies 20 kilometers (13 miles) away in the Mvezo village, where he plans to create a Mandela shrine, hotel and soccer stadium, according to the South African Press Association. Grandson Mandla Mandela has until Saturday to respond to the court filing, reports said. The anti-apartheid leader built his retirement home in Qunu and was living there until his repeated hospitalisations which started at the end of last year. Nelson Mandela attended the burial of his son at the family plot in Qunu in 2005, and it was widely expected that the leader himself would be buried there. But his grandson exhumed the bodies of Mandela’s three children and moved them to nearby Mvezo, where he holds authority as chief. Eldest daughter Makaziwe and other Mandela family members want the family bodies returned to their original graves in Qunu, according to the reports. The family court struggle came as Mandela’s ex-wife said that he had improved in recent days, but remained critical. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela gave the update on Friday while speaking to journalists outside Mandela’s former home in Soweto. “I’m not a doctor but I can say that from what he was a few days ago there is great improvement,” said Madikizela-Mandela, who is a member of South Africa’s Parliament. Madikizela-Mandela pleaded with the media to “understand the sensitivities and the feeling of the family.” His daughter Makaziwe Mandela was among the family members who arrived at the Pretoria hospital on Friday. The ministers of health and defense also visited, the South African Press Association reported. Outside the Pretoria hospital on Friday, a man flying a drone-like object with a camera attached was led away by several policemen, adding to an already heightened atmosphere where well-wishers continue to gather to pray for Mandela. Mandela was taken to the hospital on June 8 to be treated for what the government said was a recurring lung infection. South Africans have held prayers nationwide, and many have left flowers and messages of support outside the hospital as well as his home in Johannesburg. On Thursday, the office of South African President Jacob Zuma said Mandela’s health had improved overnight, and that his condition was critical but stable. On Friday night, United States President Barack Obama and his family arrived in South Africa for the second leg of the US president’s first major trip to the continent. Hopes that the first black presidents of their two respective countries might meet have been all but extinguished because of Mandela’s ill health. Speaking to journalists on board Air Force One as he flew from Senegal to Johannesburg, Obama said he didn’t want to be “obtrusive,” Daily Telegraph of London reports. “We’ll see what the situation is when we land. I do not need a photo op,” he said. “Right now, our main concern is with his well being, his comfort and with the family’s well being and comfort.” Mandela’s last wishes were contained in a Will that the then 78-year-old president made in January 1996. Events in Qunu in the past week suggest they have not changed. On Thursday, workmen in lorries and compactors began hurriedly laying soil for a new road leading to a 10-acre meadow on a slope overlooking Mandela’s pink-walled country home where his grave is expected to be.

3 Policemen Die While Chasing Okada Rider In Lagos

There was confusion on Friday in Lagos as three policemen were feared killed while attempting to arrest a commercial motorcyclist. The incident occurred at the Cement Bus Stop, along the ever-busy Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, and led to heavy traffic on the road as well some other parts of Agege. An eyewitness who pleaded anonymity said that the policemen were attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS). According to the eyewitness, the commercial motorcyclist was going towards Oshodi, carrying two passengers, when the policemen sighted him and attempted to arrest him. “He also knew that they (policemen) wanted to arrest him and he sped off; but the policemen, who were in a van, chased him. The police van caught up with him, but he suddenly swerved his bike and the driver of the van applied the brake. “The van rammed into a commercial Volkswagen bus (popularly known as Faragon in Lagos) and the policemen at the back (of the van) were flung out.” said the eyewitness. One of the policemen was said to have hit his forehead against the slab by the bridge, while another landed on his chest on the road and the third hit his head on the bridge. The okada rider and his passengers were also said to have crashed to the ground, but quickly got up and fled in different directions, abandoning the motorcycle on the road. Another eyewitness, a trader, who was heading towards Lagos Island, who identified herself as Glory, said: “I saw two policemen down. They were dead. There was a third policeman and he was struggling on the ground. “There was also another wounded policeman on the ground, he was crying and shouting at the other policemen who were in the passenger’s seat of the van to come down and assist them. He was begging his colleagues to step down and take them to the hospital. Those ones appeared to be in shock. Their guns were scattered everywhere on the road.” When contacted, the image maker in charge of the state police command, Ngozi Braide, said she was not aware of the incident.

James Bond Watch Sells for $160,000

A watch adapted for the fictional British spy 007 in the James Bond
movies sold for nearly 104,000 pounds ($160,000) at a pop culture
auction on Wednesday after being bought, strapless, at car boot sale
for 25 pounds.
The Breitling Top Time, worn by actor Sean Connery during 007's
mission to find stolen atomic bombs the 1965 movie "Thunderball", was
estimated to sell for between 40,000 and 60,000 pounds.
Auction house Christie's said this was the first watch to be modified
by the Q branch in the Bond movies and was equipped with a "Geiger
counter" to help the suave secret agent detect the emission of nuclear
radiation in the film, reports Reuters.
Made by Breitling in 1962, it was adapted by the James Bond art
department and was the only example produced for the movie, a
Christie's spokeswoman said.

She was unable to give details on the vendor or purchaser of the watch
that was one of 252 lots at the auction house's pop culture sale.
Among the many other items sold were Bob Dylan lyrics for an
unreleased song and actress Elizabeth Taylor's first wedding dress,
which she wore as an 18-year-old when she married Conrad Hilton Junior
in 1950 in one of the social events of that year attended by over 700
guests.
"The dress symbolises one of the most iconic off-screen moments of
'Golden Age Hollywood'," Christie's said in a statement.

The dress sold for nearly 122,000 pounds after an estimated sale price
of 30,000 to 50,000 pounds.

Kwara State University Expels 28 Students for various offences

At least twenty eight students have again been expelled from the Kwara
State University for contravening various offences against the
institution's rules and regulations. The students according to the
Deputy Registrar, Mr. Shuaib A. Mohammed, were expelled for
miscellaneous offences including examination malpractice, theft,
engagement in physical combat with fellow students, possession of
dangerous weapons and membership of unregistered association(s).
The deputy registrar, who spoke with newsmen in his office at Malete,
the permanent site of the university said "some of them were expelled
for exam malpractice. Some were involved in the act of misconduct,
while some belonged to an unregistered association. For example, there
was a case of a boy who used knife to fight and injure his fellow
students. There was another case of three boys who were caught around
1am holding a meeting in the bush. They were caught and throughout the
panel session, they failed to disclose other members' identities. So
we had to expel them.

He said some students' cases are still pending and that if the
investigation team finds them guilty of offences for which they were
alleged, they would eventually be expelled too.

Juliet Ibrahim Defends Her OJB Fundraising Letter

After Ghanaian actress Juliet Ibrahim posted on Instagram yesterday that she knows of a cheaper centre where ailing musician and producer, OJB Jezerel can get treatment  she now says it wasn’t with bad intentions. Juliet had written that a kidney transplant doesn't cost more than $50, 000 and doesn't understand why people raising funds for OJB are requesting for $100, 000. According to a release by her publicist, Juliet says: 'I was utterly misconstrued with my tweets on OJB’s treatment, I honestly didn’t mean cheap, I meant at a reduced cost with better treatment. Currently I have 2 relatives living with kidney failure whom I’m responsible for and caring for, thus, I’m no stranger to whatever OJB is going through.” “I don’t mean for my tweets to be misconstrued and I won’t take OJB’s health problems with levity as many have misconstrued me.  All I was trying to do was bring an idea of where we can get the transplant done since it’s utmost necessary we get it done soonest and funds ain’t coming in as much expected. Thus, I thought we could try a better and certified centre which isn’t as expensive as the current one in UK when there are several cheaper countries to perform the surgery.   Also instead of people lashing out on celebrities, they should rather be asking the government to help. “It should be further noted that we are all finding a lasting solution to help end the pain of the talented entertainer and bring smile to his face once again and not generate issue out of someone’s suggestion or hand of help. Here's the letter Juliet had written yesterday, blasting everyone supposedly harrassing and insulting celebrities about getting OJB help.

Mandela Fights for His Life While His Family Fights in Court over Burial Locations

As Nelson Mandela fights for his life in hospital, his relatives are pitted against each other in a legal battle, reportedly over where members of the family should be buried. On Friday, sixteen members of the Mandela family brought an urgent application to a regional court, reportedly to force Mandela's grandson Mandla to return remains of family members to a plot in the ancestral village where Mandela has said he wants to be buried. Mandla, a local chief in nearby Mvezo, had exhumed the remains of three of Mandela's children in Qunu in 2011 and brought them to his village, allegedly without the consent of the rest of the family. "I have been instructed by the 16 family members including (daughters) Makaziwe and Zindzi to take action against Mandla," the family lawyer Wesley Heyes said. Heyes refused to comment on the reason for the legal tussle, but local media said it was about a long-running feud over the remains. "We can't say anything further due to the sensitivity of the case," said Heyes. The court was told that a sheriff delivered the paper to Mandla's homestead and found the gates locked. The papers were nailed to the gate after several unsuccessful attempts to hand them over. "The sheriff hooted and called Mandla on his phone, which was not answered," said one of the Mandela lawyers David Smith. Mandla's spokesman Freddy Pilusa said he was not able to comment on the case. "He hasn't been served with those papers so he wouldn't be able to comment." The controversial removal of graves has recently came into the spotlight following reported family squabbles over the final resting place of the ailing Mandela. The hastily removed graves belonged to Mandela's eldest son Thembekile who died in 1969, his nine-month-old infant Makaziwe who passed away in 1948, and Mandla's own father Magkatho who died from an AIDS related illness in 2005. The trio were reburied under the cover of darkness in Mvezo, in a ceremony overseen by Mandla. The issue of the graves was also at the centre of a family meeting earlier this week. On Thursday local media reported that Makaziwe, Mandela's oldest daughter, was granted permission by a chief in Qunu to have the remains repatriated. Mandla had reportedly argued Mandela should be buried in Mvezo. (AFP)

Govt officials withdraw support for OJB due to misinformation on funds raised

There have been speculations that some celebrities have been to see
OJB and made some donations. While it's true that the likes of Don
Jazzy, P-Square, Ruggedman, Mercy Johnson, Iyanya, Julius Aguw have
contributed, the other names on the list that circulated today are
100% false. For instance, D'banj didn't give N7m, Wizkid didn't give
N3m and 2face didn't give N1.5m.

Head of committee for the #SaveOJB fund, singer Nomoreloss, says the
hype and misinformation is affecting efforts to raise the complete
money OJB needs for his treatment.

15yrs After Death, Abacha Still Owes Nigeria €175m

Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mohammed Adoke (SAN), yesterday, said Nigeria was yet to receive about €175 million starched in a foreign account by late military dictator, General Sani Abacha. Adoke, who spoke at the 2013 ministerial press briefing held in Abuja, yesterday, to highlight the mid-term achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan's administration as it pertains to the Ministry of Justice, said Federal Government had intensified its efforts to trace and repatriate Nigeria's stolen assets abroad. He said: "In this connection, we have maintained effective liaison and communication with targeted jurisdictions to keep pace with asset recovery proceedings in those jurisdictions. Recovered monies "In 2011, our close liaison and negotiation with the Island of Jersey led to the recovery and repatriation of £22.5 million confiscated by the Royal Court of Jersey from Raj Arjandes Bhojwani, an Indian national and associate of General Sani Abacha, on account of his money laundering transactions from Nigeria. We continued the liaison and negotiations with the Principality of Liechtenstein, which recently confiscated EUR 175 million from the Abacha family and associated companies in Liechtenstein following a confiscation order by the Supreme Court of Liechtenstein. "However, the companies involved have lodged an appeal against the decision before the European Court of Justice in Strasburg. "As soon as the appeal is concluded, firm arrangements consistent with the asset recovery provisions of the United Nations Convention against corruption, would be made to repatriate the forfeited sums to Nigeria." Meantime, Adoke disclosed that the Ministry of Justice, within the year under review, received 60 petitions bordering on breach of rights of citizens, lack of action on criminal matters by the law enforcement agencies. Why FG can't pardon Al-Mustapha He also gave reasons why Federal Government cannot pardon the former Chief Security Officer to late General Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha. It will be recalled that a Lagos High Court had sentenced Al-Mustapha, who is currently in prison custody, to death by hanging after he was found guilty in the murder of Alhaja Kudirat Abiola, wife of late business mogul and presumed winner of the June 12 presidential election, Bashorun M.K.O Abiola. Adoke, who noted that Al-Mustapha was tried and convicted under the Lagos State law, insisted that Federal Government lacked the powers to delve into the case as such action would tantamount to subjudice. He said: "The case has gone to the Court of Appeal. It is not within the authority of the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation, as it stands today. Even commenting on it will amount to subjudice. Justice is taking its course." While acknowledging that Nigeria is presently a part of the global debate on death sentence, Adoke said there was nothing the government could do to stop the execution of those currently on the waiting list of the hangman. He said most of the offences that attract death penalty fall under laws within the jurisdiction of states. He maintained that in view of the fact that Nigeria is a country under the principle of federalism, there is nothing the Federal Government can do, pending the review of some of the extant laws, adding, "we hope the laws will be reviewed."
